Cole Payton's team crushed the #1 team in Kansas 5A: https://omaha.com/sports/high-school...edb4dae2f.html
Cole only passed ten times but scored 3 times in the first quarter: two long TD runs (59 and 60) and a TD pass.

Re: 2021 Verbal: Cole Payton
My neighbor when we first moved to Omaha is an assistant baseball coach for Westside. Said Cole is as good of a kid as he's ever coached. Also a heck of a baseball player.

Nebraska has had one QB drafted (in round 6) since 1992.
Trey Lance will be #NDSU’s 3rd consecutive starting QB selected before round six.

The highest drafted Nebraska QB in modern era was round 6. Never made the roster
Then you have to go back to 1992 where they had a 12th round pick
You really need to go back like 40+ years
Bison will have 3 straight NFL QBs and 2 1st round picks
Coles style fits the offense like a glove
He already turned down Iowa State

Except NDSU is more likely to develop great qbs than Nebraska. If the Husker qbs were at NDSU they would better qbs than they are

Yes, some people fail to recognize that great QB are not signed, they are developed. Gopher fans are the primary group that fail to recognize this.

So coming our of high school they were simply better than almost every other QB out there and NDSU simply kept them warm until draft day?

Certain programs destroy QB . . . they don’t develop them and they don’t improve them. Part of that is style of offenses, and part of that is the mindset that we are not developmental, come in ready to compete.
NE historically is terrible on QBs, gets them injured, destroys their confidence. MN isn’t great, better than they used to be.

Right...espn 100 guys. B10 sure wasn’t clamoring after them. Talents yes but overlooked and not better than what many p5s sign. NDSU definitely has been doing a phenomenal job turning out qbs.

Re: 2021 Verbal: Cole Payton
My only concern about Cole is the fact he is a lefty. Little details can really change up an offense. Things are sometimes reversed. Your RT is now the blindside. Your handoffs are slightly different. Your rollouts can go to the opposite direction.
Of course you have guys like Steve Young and Michael Vick were lefties

Valid points. I would/will be more concerned if there’s a change in-season (injury). When they have all spring and fall camps then I really won’t worry about it.

It can be tough on the defenses too. Usually defenses like to make QBs scramble in the direction of their off arm since it's tougher for them to throw accurately going in that direction so they'd have to adapt to a lefty. They also may have to switch their DEs if they match up their stronger pass rushing DE with the weaker pass blocking OT (would be a LDE vs RT with a righty QB or RDE vs LT with a lefty QB). I don't think it's a big deal but I've even heard that it's a bit different catching the ball from a lefty QB since the ball spins clockwise coming at you instead of counterclockwise like a righty's throw would... something that might negate a potential INT for a defender that isn't used to it.

Exactly. Saw a highlight this weekend where a QB (Tua T.) was rolling out and suddenly made a pass that a right-hander couldn't make. It seemed to surprise an NFL defense.
But, really, I suspect that Cole Payton has only been playing left-handed because he was bored beating teams by 30 points every game. I suspect that he's going to pull a Princess Bride deal in a game.
-
Re: 2021 Verbal: Cole Payton
Has anyone ever watched an ambidextrous qb? ……...never heard of one...….. Wouldn't that be a hoot !! I've umpired baseball where a player played outfield right handed and pitched left handed. In this wide world of football, there has to be at least one.....

Back a long time ago I had a pitcher who was ambidextrous. That was kind of fun. He just had to declare before each batter which side he was going to throw from. Baseball there can be an advantage to doing that. Football I don't know how much of an advantage there would be. The ball is going to be different to catch from each side so it would be tough on the receivers. It would be tough for his line also. So I would think in football the coach would make the QB choose and then stay with it as I can only see disadvantages for the team by letting the QB stay ambidextrous.

Thanks for adding the "T." to that name, I don't think I would have known who you were referring to without it... ;)

Re: 2021 Verbal: Cole Payton
Mahomes has made a couple "ugly" left handed throws hasn't he? Guess wouldn't call him ambidextrous being they were pretty ugly looking throws if I remember right?
Didn't Carson throw a few warm up throws left handed back when he had the broken wrist?

Our offense is already tough to prepare for by college standards. Throw in a left handed QB and good luck prepping in the playoffs with 6 days notice

^ BisonReport interview with Cole Payton.
Mild spoiler: Saturday after Cole's championship game, a P5 head coach got in contact with Cole's HS coach trying to set up a call. Which coach may surprise you!
It's a short interview and I'll clickbait you further if you do not listen to it.

I'll guess a coach for a team who's last three quarterbacks DIDN'T get drafted into the NFL.

With him supposedly saying no thanks in regards to talking with Iowa St and Nebraska, are we starting to see a different attitude with QB recruits with our track record for NFL talent?

Hedberg has another great one one coming in, why wouldn’t a talented QB want to play for NDSU, this guy is Stick clone only better

Re: 2021 Verbal: Cole Payton
I agree and that’s what I’m asking. Is the coaching starting to show for that position?

Maybe, but like Trey Lance, Cole was being recruited by P5 schools to play other positions (LB, TE.)
Huskers have a QB commit from Kearney (Heinrich Haarberg.)

Other than being a southpaw, he has NDSU prototypical starting QB dripping off him.

Re: 2021 Verbal: Cole Payton
It also said he was undoubtedly ranked as the most impactful and one of the most determined players in the state.
He said he has already a strong friendship with members of his recruiting class, including Bryce Lance.
-
Re: 2021 Verbal: Cole Payton
I'm just going to go ahead and say this: Cole Payton will have the same relationship with Bryce that Lance has with Sproles and Watson. Will get drafted into the NFL within the first 3 Rds. That is all.
