I like hockey, fun sport to watch live but here are the issues.
1. Women's hockey: Garbage sport that nobody wants to watch and is extremely expensive. Title 9 basically means it has to be added. You know the top dogs in hockey will want to do full cost of attendance, that means you are paying that out to the women as well. Making it even more expensive then it currently is.
2. UND: Hockey is their everything, they have a beautiful arena, tremendous history and are in a premier conference. All the hockey and casual hockey fans around here support them and the only way to turn them is to win at a high level. NDSU playing in the WCHA and hosting games at Scheels will look second rate in comparison. Maybe if you are MSUM being that is ok but that is not ok for me. Being a hockey power in this region would cost barrels of money and it would have to come from somewhere even with a few wealthy donors backing the program.
3. Flexibility: We add hockey and we are devoting all this money and resources there. I think those resources are better served enhancing the sports we have, I would much rather be great at what we offer athletically without hockey instead of mediocre across the board with hockey. Lets the G5 and upper FCS merges, football will need more resources to compete....you want to hamstring the program with a hockey ball and chain it has to drag around?
I will say again I like hockey and there was a time when I wanted NDSU to add it but that time has come and gone. Back when the WCHA was the premiere conference I thought it was a doable idea if they would let us in. But so much in college hockey has changed and it isn't really enticing to be a start-up unless you have big money backing you and a top conference that wants you.
Basketball should be our niche after football, let the others have hockey.
Gabe nailed it, whatever happened to the guys who were looking into bank rolling MSUM? If that cash could be used to build NDSU centric practice rinks and locker rooms at Scheels + a good chunk towards an endowment why not? Of course it could potentially take away some fans of other sports who have to choose. But as a fan it would be cool for more year round entertainment .

I always have thought it was a bit ridiculous that we didn't have DI hockey in this town. There is no question it could be supported. No, we wouldn't be absolutely top-tier like UND is to start with but an FM team could absolutely be competetive and over the course of several decades could emerge as top-tier. We have the youth programs and local interest.
But I am starting to see the other side now. NDSU has done very well during their transition to DI. I'd rather see them have overall excellence than hockey. That said, I do believe we will have a local hockey team at some point. How much would it hurt NDSU to have MSUM competing for local sponsorships? Like it or not, hockey would be fairly high-profile in this region.
I would 100% support (and own season tickets to) hockey at MSU-Moorhead. This would in no way affect my donations or attendance at NDSU events.Quote:

The fact is, there is plenty of hockey in and around Fargo, so what we are REALLY talking about here is competing against UND's program. And for what? An ego trip against UND? NDSU does not need to be everything for everybody. I'm plenty fine with letting UND be what they are (a hockey-only school) and NDSU be what we are (basically, everything else that is successful!).
Junior hockey is where the future is anyway. If I were a hockey fan in Fargo-Moorhead, I would be advocating for a higher level junior hockey team rather than an NCAA program. Leave NDSU out of it.

Anything that even remotely has the potential to take away from NDSU's other successful programs makes absolutely no sense to me. Without mega bucks coming from someone like SS had I don't see how it could be done.
