I spoke to a coach on the UW-Oshkosh staff and he said that Tyler is going to be playing there this fall. NDSU apparently cooled on him a little bit and the kid just wants to play football, so he decided to play closer to home.

badger boy:
From 4-star recruit to UW Oshkosh. Something tells me there must be some big issues here.
This blows and we can't spin it. We lost half of our D line to a theft ring and the only good news was this Guy. The sky isn't falling but he was a key piece of the puzzle. His backup has a lot to prove. All wecan hope for nowise the young guys to step up.

The RFr need to step up big imho. Juckem, Perry, Gimmestad, Drevlow, and Jirik.

Re: Westphal to Oshkosh?? wtf
Forum just reported it. Apparently he wanted to be closer to home, and Bohl was counting on him.

I'm telling you, this smells like a guy that came in all excited, was caught off guard by the talent of the guys already here and it scared him. You don't make a comment about what a great work ethic you have and then pack it in after a week or so without having some confidence issues or being nothing but talk. I say he got a little taste of reality and decided to go home where he had a support system in place to massage his confidence.
There, I spun this and I didn't even have to stretch to do it.;)

His backup??? You lost me. I was under the impression he never played a single down for the Bison, therefore meaning that he was never a starter. Meaning that there was no backup to him.
Just my little rant. Sorry.

Yes, the talent he saw here after being at Wisconsin scared him. All of our talent on defense was so apparent last year. We had guys sitting on the bench who could have started for anywhere.

Honestly, after watching practice yesterday, the last position I am worried about is D-Line. The kids were stepping up and putting alot of pressure on. Leevon Perry and Justin Juckem cannot possibly have 4 years left. There is just no way. If you asked a random group of people how old Justin Juckem was, they would tell you 30. Kid is a man.
One particular play that Leevon blew up ended with Coach Hazelton coming running from damn near the other side of the field yelling "LEEVON....LEEVON....LEEVON..." He finally turned around, probably worried he screwed up, and Hazelton came running and gave him a huge high 5. Making sure the kid knew he did it correct. The coaching on the field was very impressive to me. I think the youth on this team is very evident after watching. I hope the fanbase is very patient, because the next few years could be special. The young talent is amazing.

I was being a little sarcastic. I agree with our young talent. I even posted it when everyone was gushing over Westphal transferring here. We have some real solid young players up front and him starting was never a given in my book. I'll wait until the guys put pads on though to do more evaluating.

Re: Westphal to Oshkosh?? wtf
He is a Wiscy kid who didn't want to leave the state, that is pretty clear. And for those who think he left wiscy because he wasn't starting. False, he left because he wasn't allowed to even compete for the starting job.
-
Re: Westphal to Oshkosh?? wtf
If he wasn't even allowed to compete for playing time, he must have fallen way out of favor, he must have way under achieved in his time in Madison. Is that your impression Bill? He must not be very strong in the teammate category. If he had the ability, I would liked to have seen him in green and yellow, but I'm not for wasting scholarships either, we've done enough of that.

This what i know about Wisconsin and Bielema. He "punishes "those kids who are hurt or injured. Tyler was a huge part of his particular class, especially when you consider he was the homegrown star. A similar thing happened to Kim Royston as well and i'm sure many more. Tyler did nothing wrong other than injure his shoulder. From what some have said, Bielema thought he should have came back from it a lot sooner. I haven't heard why he decided against NDSU, i'm shocked as much as anyone.

Nope 100% true. Same thing happened to Royston a few years ago.

When kids are injured in a big time program and cant compete they are actually pushed to the wayside because the next person needs to step up and the coaches need to turn there full attention to those who are playing. Until a player recovers and can actually compete they are an after thought.
It sounds to me as the kid was injured and when he couldnt compete they moved on. Sounds cruel but thats the reality of the situation.

Pretty much. Yet, Tyler wasn't even given a chance to compete. But doesn't matter, he's not coming to NDSU, so it's a dead issue.

Re: Westphal to Oshkosh?? wtf
It sucks that he isn't coming here but I'm not going to get to bent out of shape about a kid who has never played one down in a Bison uniform.

Re: Westphal to Oshkosh?? wtf
From the media blog:
Turns out transfer Tyler Westphal from the University of Wisconsin never got his paperwork to NDSU, so you probably can question how serious he was about the Bison. The defensive end, at one time a highly touted recruit, is apparently going to play at Division III Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Wow, a highly regarded DE prospect in all of DI will end up going to a DIII school. Pathetic unless he or someone in his family has health issues. To have all that talent and downgrade your playing level. Wish I would have had Tylers size and talent back in my playing days! I sure would have played DI ball.

If he went DII instead of DIII would it be less pathetic to you? You're the guy who rips on FCS level Drake as so far beneath you so I'm not surprised by your condescending attitude.

I happen to know that he was a wiscy kid who was never given the opportunity to get his paperwork to NDSU. He tried but wasn't even given the chance. It's a known fact Coach Bohl punishes transfer kids.....blah, blah, blah.
The real reason why this kid wasn't on the 2 deep roster at Wisconsin is becoming clear. How can you talk about what a great work ethic you have and how you want to prove yourself then not follow up on the paperwork?!?!?
What he meant was...."The Wisconsin coaching staff realized that I am completely full of shit. I am looking for a new coaching staff to snow and the guys at NDSU are good enough that the coaches won't have to put up with a player full of shit.....better go DIII."

Just because a kid decides to go elsewhere doesn't mean you have a free pass to run him through the mud.

When words come out of your mouth they should mean something. It's called being a man. The fact that he didn't get any paperwork over to NDSU tells me he has a lot of growing up to do. In my book, if your actions don't match what comes out of your mouth....you are full of shit. No one told him to say that we were all going to see what kind of kid he was by his work ethic....he did that on his own. Hey, I call it the way I see it. Maybe a little harsh but probably pretty closed to the bulls eye.

So an 18 year old changed his mind on where he wanted to go to school. How exactly does that translate into having no work ethic and looking for coaches to snow? If the roles were reversed and Tyler backed out somewhere else and came to NDSU, you'd be praising his decision.
-
Re: Westphal to Oshkosh?? wtf
He's not 18, he has a couple of years under his belt in college.
I'm done with this on the board but you can PM me if you like.
-
Re: Westphal to Oshkosh?? wtf
he left for a hot blonde, go back and look for the pic on this thread.
whatever, like my booster badger cousin said "there's a reason he couldnt play at U W and that he didnt want to try at NDSU"
end of story.

PM my ass. You slung the mud in public now defend it. Recruits change their commitments every day. I don't like it, but it's not like Tyler did anything especially out of the ordinary here to warrant personal attacks. You just don't like it because he decided not to play for your team. I'll even bet the great Scooter1 sometimes changes his mind and doesn't follow through on what he says he's going to do....guess Scooter must not be a man, Scooter must have a lot of growing up to do, Scooter must have no work ethic, Scooter must be full of shit, Scooter must be looking for coaches to snow....

Hey Scooter, check out your post from 2 days ago. You seem to be OK with Bohl playing loose with the truth if it helps the team. What happened to words coming out of your mouth meaning something? Guess you must be full of shit.
Seriously, what the heck do you expect Bohl to say about a kid after practice #2 of his college career? It's good PR to do a little fluff piece for the home town folks who are following a local kid excited about being a Bison.
What did you want him to say?
Bismarck press: "Coach Bohl, how is that Bismarck QB doing?"
Coach Bohl: "He'll be a fine practice squad QB for us this year."
Now, you guys don't want to hear that.
