I would be very surprised if they havent already been doing some hard core recruiting. May be they just dont tell the media when they do it to make themselves look good..
I guess I dont understand people giving SDSU short shift in there effort-recruiting when its obvious that they are doing something right. Trust me when I say Iam no fan of the bunnies but I do give credit where its due.

Well maybe we need to define talent to make this a discussion. I define talent in terms of recruiting as athleticism. Does athleticism make you a great football player, no. But most of the time recruiting is done on the basis of athleticism. Don't believe me, ask someone who recruits, as I have. Most college recruiters feel they can teach someone how to be a better football player if the raw athleticism is there, we have better athletes than SDSU, IMO. It is on that basis that I feel we have more talent than SDSU. I wouldn't say our coaching is that bad, we were in every game this year and as anyone who knows football can tell you, games are won and lost on 5-7 plays a game. The team who comes up big on those 5-7 plays usually wins a football game. We aren't that far off. We gave Southern Illinois who is making a nice run for the championship all they could ever want. A team without talent can't do that. Go up and down the roster between us and SDSU and tell me they have a better "athlete" at that position.

I hear what your saying but since we are talking football I'll take the better football players over better athletes. There is a difference in my opinion. I'll save the upside talk for the NBA draft. After watching the Bison/Bunnies game the last 5 years I would say there are positions they have better football players at and postions we have better football players at. I don't know about athletes and who would win in a game of basketball or which team would win a track meet. I'm just judging by the results on the field.

Just because a recruit is listed on "scouts or rivals" doesn't make them a better recruit than one that isn't. There isn't really an accurate way to measure who has the better recruiting class from SDSU and NDSU besides looking back 4 years later. (SDSU's recruiting class from 05 was better than NDSU's but I'm guessing NDSU fans felt differently in 05)

A good example is WR Trevor Tiefenthaler. His dad is one of the top three WR ever at SDSU. Trevor dominated at DB, QB, & WR for a small Iowa school and was a 400 meter champ in Iowa with a 48 second 400. He never appeared on a scouting site but has been great at practice as a freshman and is projected to be starting at WR next year. I would be willing to bet that he is as good as Cooper Wahlo Jr but because Cooper was on Rivals people think he is a better recruit.

Some other notes are that Coach Stig says he goes about recruiting differently in that he doesn't pay attention to speed and 40 times as much but is concerned more if the player is a leader and is a "football player". He also refers to his team as a blue collar/hard working team, but as SIU Coach Lennon said, Don't let them fool you with their blue collar talk, SDSU has some of the better playmakers and athletes in the conference.

I think that we as Bison fans think some of our kids our more talented than what they really are. We want these kids to succeed. We have high expectations for them. And when our team sucks and the kid doesn't perform as expected we often blame it on bad luck, bad coaching, wrong system etc. Maybe all along the kid just wasn't talented. As for us being more talented than SDSU, that's extremely subjective. How do you judge talent? Statistics? Wins? In either case an outsider would probably side with SDSU. They been more successful recently.

All valid points and I couldn't agree more about rivals and/or scouts. Being from ND I am well aware that some of the greatest talent out there can easily fly under the radar. With that said, let's look at head to head recruiting, which comes up pretty often with our teams. Based on history, and correct me if I am wrong, I would say 8-9 out of 10 kids that has been given the opportunity to attend both SDSU and NDSU all things being equal(scholarship money) has chosen NDSU. Now to me that isn't necessarily a direct correlation to our coaches ability to recruit as there are other variables to consider, but it shows that NDSU as an entity is able to recruit better than SDSU. You can only conclude that if we are after the same kid, we both want them to attend our respective school, if they choose NDSU and SDSU is forced to take their second choice than NDSU has the better athlete in that situation. I have a lot of respect for SDSU, so I wouldn't like my comments to be taken as me thinking NDSU is king and all others should bow before us. I just think that between NDSU and SDSU we do a better job recruiting. Kudos to SDSU for taking "less talent" and winning more games with it.

Lennon is still using ALL jerry kill recruits too. he left that cupboard STACKED.

A recap:

1. What month a recruit verbals (September or January) doesn't have a bearing on how good a recruit is.

2. Judging a recruit's ability by the inaccurate Rivals or Scouts doesn't hold much ground.

3. SDSU's team is more athletic than Bisonville gives them credit for, but Stig does hold a premium to "football players" rather than track stars.

4. "bunny turds" are reading/posting on Bisonville because we are football fans and enjoy following teams in the area (SDSU, NDSU, UNI, USD) and conference foes.
I read SDSUfans, Bisonville, PantherNation, SalukiTalk, Anygivensaturday, and other teams during game week. I don't post on all these boards because they don't typically talk much about SDSU. Rabbit fans post here because there is always a poster like SDBison who tries trashing sdsu, so we come out of the woodwork to defend our team.
A little back & forth between fans can be entertaining though and helps pass the long work days. My suggestion to keep the rabbit infestation down to a minimum is too stop bringing them up... ehem... sdbison.

We targeted kids ealier this year and it is paying off. It takes years to judge a class. I also thought NDSU had a better class in 05 and it turned out I was wrong. Stig is looking to put together a much smaller but talented class.

It's a strategy that I think is new to NDSU and not the normal practice in the FCS right now. I think most coaching staffs in the FCS are shorthanded enough that they are focusing more on practice/winning than recruiting. I think Coach Bohl knew that this year was going to be a wash so he jumped on recruiting early to get some recruits before other schools got going. Not a bad strategy, alot of kids site that "they recruited me early" as a strong point to why they chose one school over the other. I think it can also come back to bite at times too as there can be a risk taking kids before they've played their senior seasons.

Since when is it a bad thing that there are a lot of players getting interest from NDSU? Interest doesn't mean a thing other than they are getting out there to a lot recruits. Interest is all in how the recruit views it, is he getting a letter once every few weeks? Is it a handwritten something once a week? Calls on a very regular basis? Point is, a recruit could get the usual mailing once a month and say he is getting interest.

It's a bad thing that NDSU has an offer out to a kid who is getting looks from Iowa St., Kansas St., Nebraska, and Oregon? But I suppose that because SDSU doesn't have an offer out to him its foolish?

Why is it a risk to take kids before they have played their senior season? Rarely does a player take a step back from their senior season compared to junior. The coaching staffs have also seen this kids at their summers camps, seeing them in person, meeting with them, will tell you a whole lot more than you can tell from watching them on tape. Yeah, the risk of injury is there, but the school is not bound to a scholarship offer, but you also have the advantage of getting a good relationship with a recruit, and if he has an outstanding senior season which leads to big schools calling, if you have sold him on your program, etc, you have a leg up.

I wasn't trying to say that getting out and recruiting early and often was a bad thing, just a difference in strategy compared to other FCS schools and also compared to what NDSU did in the past.
Your right that signing a kid before their senior season isn't a big risk, but there is still some risk/reward to it.
The risks I see would be Injury, a change of heart, doesn't make grades, or mainly, having a player not progress like a coaching staff would predict.
Some players potential can flatline early and I would think it helps to be able to compare where a player is their junior year and than how much they improved for their senior year to help project their ceiling. Recruiting is really all projection to see where a player will be at a couple years down the road.
But like you said, the players NDSU were offering they were doing with a good amount of info. I would assume most of the kids were at their summer camp and the coaching staff got a chance up close to see what they are capable of.

Just wondering, who does Bisonville see as the top 3 or 4 recruits that have verbaled so far? My guess would be LB Don Carter, QB/S Esley Thornton, OL Jesse Hinz & WR Trevor Gebhardt?

Do you have a link to this post on our board, I'd like to see who said it. By most accounts, the two highest regarded players in SD this year are Tom Farniok, the OL from SF Washington who has committed to Iowa State, and Austin Sumner the QB from Brandon Valley who has yet to verbally commit.

BTW, Farniok's younger brother Derek (6'8", 300lb junior this year) is said to be even better and will be the most highly recruited player in SD and ND next year. Already has offer from the gophers and others...

I'm predicting a safety - secondary needs to be locked down by some guys who know what they're doing and I'll bet Bohl and co. are waiting to surprise us after having used the last two seasons masterfully to build dramatic tension on the way to that 25-0 season I predicted earlier.

I still think Esley is a QB first. I mean, the guy is smart, cool, fast, and collected - btw, has an arm that you just don't see very often (he's the defending state champ in the javelin.) If he can pick up the offense and make quick reads, get him as QB.

I don't care who else we sign as long as they are great players. I'd sure like some of those Minnesota offers to come through (two LBs and two WRs.)

there was an article in this weeks sports illustrated about the amount of high-caliber quarterbacks that come out of texas. something like 22 of them starting in the FBS this year. have we ever tried to go after a qb down there?

Great point, I just checked in the 2010 graduating class(list includes some JC players as well) they have 22 committed players to Division 1 schools right now! Only 1 of which is FCS (Texas-San Antonio the new program starting up) Otherwise all 21 are FBS. 10 more QB's in the class have FBS offers. There has to be a solid QB we can try and steal away from an FBS offer down there. Also another 1 QB with FCS offer.

Anybody heard about Favre's nephew in Mississsppi? Owns all of the Mississippi high school qb records with NO D-1 offers? He's 17 and only 5'11' so too small ?His name is Dylan Favre. I saw an AP article on him in the Billings, MT Gazette.

Yeah, you're absolutely right. I was kind of rushing through a bunch of updates and misplaced him.

Speaking of WRs, the Badgers are after AJ Troup too. NDSU wants him to get his GPA up and the Badgers want him to retake the ACT (so he might not actually have a Bison offer). In a BadgerBlitz.com interview he said he had an offer from UNI and UND told him that they'd offer within the next couple weeks.
