Re: A new and better FBS thread
A few of them..In the olden days.
I think NDSU could certainly compete in G5..It ain't that hard. I was just opining that perhaps you would not enjoy playing at weird times against schools you have no history with. I have been on message boards for 25 years or so but until some guy named Lakes Bison came on the MW board, I had never seen any discussion about NDSU. That is not out of a lack of respect for you..I would imagine you rarely if ever chatted about Nevada or San Jose State or NM or any of the other MW schools either..We just never crossed paths.
Lakes started out nice enough but then started insulting the MW school and their fans..He was joined by some guy named tenbobnote. He holds the MW in total contempt. This was all pretty surprising and out of left field, completely. The MW had no openings, no connection to FCS other than playing FCS schools from time to time. That is what brought me to this board..I wanted to see what all the buzz was about.
I respect your run in FCS. I was pretty ignorant of most of it, though..I am not sure how you latched onto the MW as a destination but maybe it will happen..I don't know.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Regarding rivalries, our current conference doesn’t really offer long-term historic references other than UND or SDSU. The UNI rivalry lit up pretty well right when we joined the MVFC. Other than that, the rest of our conference "rivalries" will be very easy to replace. Hell, UNI & UND aren't really competitive anymore so those have kinda fizzled anyway. I have no doubt that at least on the NDSU fanbase's side, new rivalries will be established in the MWC just about by the time the initial excitement of the move starts to wain. I'm also confident in the ability of our fans to annoy other fanbases and stoke the rivalry from the other side.

Ha, Lakes is pretty good at that all by his lonesome, based on MWC's comments.
If we get some competitive series going, I could see rivalries developing with teams like the new SDSU.
Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Nevada are about as close to neighboring states as we'll get outside of Montana and South Dakota/SDSU, who I hope come along.

The UND one is still there. Damn near lost to them last year.
But yeah, I'm sure we could make a decent rivalry game or two in any G5 conference. But it's hard. (See West Virginia in Big 12). Even forcing the rivalry with South Dakota State was kinda hokey and that's a natural region rival.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Rivalries are born by winning meaningful games back and forth a few times. Or dick moves like running a guy into a wall and throwing punches.

Part of the rivalry is actually being "friends" colleagues and family with fans of the other team for the trash talking. Will there be on the field rivals no doubt. This isn't a huge hang up but I don't want to "pretend" we're rivals with some other no name in the conference though or stuck in with a bunch of misfits either.
I don't know if it'll happen but that's why montana msu sdsu and ndsu type group It would be interesting I know personally fans of those teams so that is a pipe dream of mine. Not sure und will ever get their crap in a pile to make the jump.
That said the rivalry with SDSU was sort of manufactured and it turned out ok.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Sure, but does NDSU really have much of that now? SDSU, sure, but it seems to me like most UND fans have mostly gone into the shadows and don't talk about anything but hockey.
Our current conference isn't full of NDSU historic matchups. We wouldn't really be losing THAT much.

Exactly. What exciting regional matchups do we have now that are exciting? Most of us don’t want to be in the same conference as UND. USD moves my meter exactly 0. Every single conference game would be an upgrade across the board for almost everyone’s interest level.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
With schools moving around these days maybe rivalries won't much matter any more..
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
und is non existent. even und fans I know have 100% gone to "hockey only"
sdsu fans loathe us
UNI fans actually hate us, I miss them already, walking thru their corridors at halftime was an adventure.
NDSU Is so ready and our FANBASE is soooo ready for new blood and bigger rivals. no one has touched us since 2009.
NDSU WYOMING. Bohl
NDSU Colorado State we already beat them & lots of Denver NDSU alum.
NDSU Boise St. 2 dynasty programs
NDSU UNLV. Vegas games will have minimum 25,000 ndsu fans there
these will happen Day 1
ps. these fanbase will bring 1000-2000 actual fans to Fargo as opposed to the 200 most bring
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Everybody beats Colorado State in football..They are horrible, regularly..
For you to be added, schools would have to leave..So likely no Boise games.
Travel to Vegas is a nice trip but you would rarely play them
Wyoming is your best bet..
I have no idea how many traveling fans would go to Fargo..

Define "us" in most of us don't want UND. Using 2019/20 attendance as it's the most recent non-crazy year, the UND football game drew more to the Dome than any other. Men's and women's BB both had UND as a close second to SDSU, then a gap until anyone else. You say you want big names in Fargo, did you or anyone you know attend WBB when Wisconsin, Wyoming, Iowa St, and Northern Ill were here in 2019? You can talk all you want on the internet but the simple fact is UND and SDSU bring fans to games, and big names don't. I'm not trying to compare WBB to FB, but you can't argue against actual attendance.

Awesome, UND outdrew Omaha, UMKC and Denver. I’m shocked. I guess we can’t live without them! I’d love to replace UND MBB with UNLV, Nevada or Colorado State. As would most.
I live 1,000 miles away so no I didn’t go, but I watched all the WBB games you referenced and then didn’t tune in until the Summit championship. I’m already doing the same on the MBB side.
If attendance numbers tell the whole story, why is our attendance dropping by the thousands? We still have all our little regional rivalries to get everyone excited? This is like case in point the same argument that was made against going D1 and FCS. What were we going to do without Saint Cloud, Auggie, UND and USD? I think it worked out just fine.

No, conference affiliation and lots of "fans" who want a move yet do nothing to financially support it are holding it back.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Didn’t attendance start the slow decline after the fighting hawks joined the conference? I would be very careful about letting them define where NDSU FB belongs. They are looking at a rather serious Title IX lawsuit that could entirely reshape their athletic department, even though nobody wants to talk about it.
As for FBS, Herder is even pushing it now. Interesting comments here. I would say there has to be $$ support for FB at least.

The last piece to the FBS puzzle facilities wise is the Dome, doable for now but a plan would need to be in place.
50Million on a Practice facility hell that's more than most FCS schools Endowments cough* Western Ill cough*
NDSU has officially found it can't buy pants to fit anymore in the FCS men's section...

Re: A new and better FBS thread
All this FBS talk and all I can think about is how our basketball programs are a liability to us going anywhere. I've designated Giving Day donations to go specifically to basketball, but I feel like I may as well light a match to that money.
The men's team is on the verge of being passed by St Thomas, Kansas City and Omaha. The Women's program is a shell of what it used to be. Neither one moves the needle for any conference entertaining ideas of inviting us. Academics and football check the boxes. The other sports do not.
For all the football success, we have failed to take advantage of opportunities in other sports. I'm afraid that until changes are made, we aren't going anywhere.

Exactly. After Saul & Oklahoma win was the perfect time for a nationwide search & a coach that would entertain & fill the seats

1 - It may be even harder to move to another conference, due to contracts and exit fees, etc.
2 - We would be much more of an "afterthought" - because right now there is *no* television for this league after 2022.
At least in FCS, we always get a few games on ESPN during the playoffs, and the championship game gets nice exposure.
3 - It may be a negative revenue league soon - meaning you pay in rather than get paid.
CUSA right now is the laughing stock of FBS, and the Bison joining that hot mess would not matter.

The MWC is not going to add an FCS call up, regardless of who it is. We have a finite amount of time to make this move before the window closes and we should move when the situation is right. We are worth significantly more to a good G5 conference as a fully transitioned FBS counter. Up until last year, the only conference to take a transitioning program was the Sun Belt and Big West. Now that CUSA is bottom tier, they are taking them. Sitting around waiting for an invite to the MWC or AAC is in exercise in futility.

I'm fine if NDSU moves up. Just not to the CUSA or some other shit conference. "Fine" but not blow my wad and send stacks of cash to Fargo like El Chapo makes up.

After Nevada, Fresno and Hawaii left, that version of the WAC took on UTSA and Texas State..UTSA is moving to the AAC. It didn't take long..

Well they don’t want us because of the geography, but yeah 100%. At this point I think everyone is on board with going MW if we got an invite. I’d guess a slim majority would want to go if we got an invite to MAC, and very few of us would want to go CUSA. Does that sound right?

Someone brought up Title IX.
First, has a group tried to resurrect a failed suit against UND (for dropping women's hockey)? Yes. Will it fail again? More than likely given same attorney, same claims, and plaintiffs with less standing than the first go-around. That's before I mention that UND had the best Title IX firm in the country on retainer when it went through the evaluation and action of dropping the sport. (That's why the first suit failed.)
If NDSU goes FBS it'll surely go from (FCS) 63 to (FBS) 85 equivalencies, 22 more for men's sports. NDSU will find that money. But where will it put 22 additional women's equivalencies? NDSU is max'd out per this site. It sounds like "add a sport" to make it work.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Additional thoughts:
Beyond Title IX (Federal law), to be NCAA FBS you must sponsor 16 NCAA sports. Checking the usual suspects brought up here ...
NDSU: check (8+8 for 16)
Montana: fail (6+9 for 15)
Montana State: fail (7+8 for 15)
SDSU: check (9+9* for 18)
UND: check (8+9 for 17)**
USD: check (7+10^ for 17)
UNI: check (7+10 for 17)
MoiSt: check (9+11 for 20)
Montana and Montana State would have to add a sport to go FBS.
All would have to ensure Title IX compliance.
*might be 10, not sure if equestrian is officially recognized by the NCAA yet
**UND was at 21 when it first moved to DI but that is unsustainable unless you're P5 or have fat stacks of cash just laying about
^might be 11, not sure if triathlon is officially recognized by the NCAA yet

if NDSU is in the MWC, that's 5 games in Fargo.
Nevada for example would FLY to Fargo every other year, right now Nevada flies to Boise/Wyoming.. flying to Fargo is 1 hour longer, BIG FUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKIN DEAL!!!
