How much depends how the FBS shuffle shakes out. Is there an internal split or do they all leave? What about NCAA hoops? Lots of unknowns right now and I’d be surprised to see much more movement until there is clarity. 2023 most likely …
AAC sits at 14 and the MWC sits at 12
NDSU needs to be the first G5 School in the upper midwest. We cannot allow any other to do it before us. There's an opportunity to be a unique FBS School up here with tradition/history and can easily succeed in FBS and become a program that schools like BYU/Boise/Cincy are already at.

They don't need to be first they need it to be right.

MWC today reminds me of this scene from Uncle Buck:
https://youtu.be/jpvkUdMu60A
Don’t get me wrong, they’re valid questions and add to the chat, but the rapid fire nature had me thinking of that scene.

We are limited to ND and NW MN. Beyond that, limited to alums and their parents/kids. Plenty of them in Minneapolis but thats just how it is.
I don't see random kids in the Twin Cities deciding to become Bison fans over the Gophers or another team that is a perennial contender just because their games are on Fox Sports 2 or whatever channel they might be on.

They’ll do it right by default. NDSU admin won’t take a pay cut for sports just to go FBS, so they won’t consider anything that isn’t an upgrade over what we have now, which should make all MIDCO homers on here happy. And there are many of you apparently ...

Not directly, but it would help with visibility. Increased visibility = increased applicants. This is why we have NDSU billboards down in the cities. Not saying people are automatically going to become fans, but when Mr. and Mrs. Minneapolis' kid is looking to go to school and UofM is too expensive, it'd be great to be the next school to pop into their head.
In my opinion, sports serve two major purposes for a university: 1. A way to establish connections with alumni and 2. Increase visibility. My oversimplified stance is that I think going to the MW helps with both and is therefore in the best interest of the University.

When St. Thomas hits their BB potential they'll be well past the Summit, all of it.

So...moving up was a long time coming for a school that more than deserved it and has the resources needed to be successful? And it'll be the best decision they ever made?
What about all the great regional rivalries they had at D3 tho?!

When the move goes down it better be an upgrade. Moving to the current CUSA for example would be a massive disaster.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
So, the Forum "Izzo Podcast" Asks? "Why is SDSU still getting games, whereas NDSU can't"
So, the answer to that is so elementary that it requires no further elaboration. I mean, HELLO!
SDSU National Championships - 0
SDSU Wins vs good FBS Teams - 0 (yes, they might have won 1 or 2, but not any that mattered)
Striking Fear in Opponents - 0
Is the Forum really asking this question?

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Interesting that St Thomas has been brought up. In their D1 jump, they had excellent geography, conference invites for all sports, and the finances to bring facilities up to the new standards. I agree completely they made the right choices given their situation.

The only thing that got them to D1 was that there was a conference having a semi-existential crisis. No different than what will be required for us to be invited to a G5 at this point. The 2017 Summit League didn't care about their geography or finances. But when it was time for the conference to look, St. Thomas was ready. Just like the Mountain West of the past didn't care about anything NDSU, hopefully moving forward a situation arises where they will look our direction.

MWC changed things at meetings today
Starting in 2023
1 division.
Top 2 teams meet for the title.
Here's your first look at the Conference matchups for 2023-2025 ➡️

Did they say how they’re going to decide who the top two teams are when you don’t play 1/3 of the conference?

A rousing contest of Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock.

Just playing Rock-Paper-Scissors would be too D2.

Geography is in the Tommies' favor. MSP media and MSP recruiting and MSP potential student population.
Fiscally, um, yeah, the Tommies', they've always been flush.

Exactly my point. How far did all that get them before the Summit started panicking about a meltdown.
NDSU’s job right now is to make sure it’s St Thomas in this scenario and not Auggie.

How does FCS determine seeding for their playoffs?

Playoff committee uses a super secret algorithm to award shitty teams from the south with seeds they don't deserve.
But it is usually VERY clear who #1 and #2 are anyway so any seeding after that doesn't have as much of an impact.

That is a perfect explanation!

Except for the part about the rest of the seeds not having much impact. There are typically several top 8 teams stuck playing an extra round and paired geographically which distorts the bracket a lot. Getting the seeds wrong is the most impactful thing the committee does.

100% This! SDSU and the Montana's are going to make the move eventually but being the first to transition and establish ourselves as the sole upper Midwest G5 school is just to valuable of an opportunity to pass up. Now, with that said, with the current recruiting class we have coming in, it would be nice to stack up a couple more Natty's first. ;)
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I have been assured by some here that all G5's are afterthoughts..Do you really want to sign up to be an instant afterthought..You would be known as the 1st upper midwest afterthought. So there is that.

Lets just say you're first and it's the CUSA.
2 years later the MWC pulls Montana and Montana State.
Being first doesn't mean shit.

I was going to say stogies, scotch, and a smoke-filled back room, but that's where the algorithm is implemented.

Man I didn’t know you were going to take it this hard. When was the last time a Nevada highlight was shown on ESPN? When was the last time Nevada was brought up on a national football show? In your head and in your corner of the country Nevada is a big deal. The same thing goes for NDSU and North Dakota. Outside our respective areas we may as well not exist. Sorry to be the one to tell you…
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Dude I am just kidding around with you guys..I don't care if you think Nevada is an afterthought, it is okay with me..

Yep, this is the one move that would take us backwards, and jeopardize the whole program.
It could cost millions, and get us stuck in a league with lower-tier texas FCS teams that simply relabeled themselves.
1 - It may be even harder to move to another conference, due to contracts and exit fees, etc.
2 - We would be much more of an "afterthought" - because right now there is *no* television for this league after 2022.
At least in FCS, we always get a few games on ESPN during the playoffs, and the championship game gets nice exposure.
3 - It may be a negative revenue league soon - meaning you pay in rather than get paid.
CUSA right now is the laughing stock of FBS, and the Bison joining that hot mess would not matter.

Conference USA is the saddest conference in FBS these days, bar none. All of its most interesting teams are about to leave for the AAC, and no league was a bigger loser from the 2021 realignment wave than this one.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
You are correct that Nevada doesn't get mentioned on ESPN much but the MW providers are Fox and CBS. They talk about MW members, including NV, all the time. No denying that the MW is just a nice regional conference, though. It is fun as hell with long time rivalries. That's good enough for me..I am far more interested in that than the Alabama's and Ohio States of the world..Not everything has to be grand and important..

If replying to my post - I think MWC would be great for exposure, it's CUSA that is dead, and has nothing.
edit - looks like you are replying to NDSU92 ... he has some fair points, but MWC's coverage on Fox/CBS is still pretty good.
In the end, most G5 conferences don't get the same exposure as the P5's in the media.
Which goes back to why having good rivals to play matters a lot. Being stuck in a league with SHSU and SFA would suck balls.

Yea I'm with you. I dont watch a ton of MWC, used to watch more when TCU and Utah were there. I check out an AFA game now and then. Its still a fine conference regardless of exposure on sportscenter.
If one of the requirements for moving up is NDSU cant lose any exposure or branding, then we are never going to move up. NDSU is all but guaranteed to get exposure right now because the level of domination and the bizarre location is a goofy annual story for ESPN and others.
If we move up, we probably lose that. But at least we'd be where we competitively belong. Might get some fun coverage for awhile. Its sorta a good story if we move up and are still very good. It's also a story if we move up and get humbled.
I'd like to see NDSU in the FBS. Probably even CUSA. I think improving basketball is the best ticket to getting an invite. Really want the school to pump resources into that now that we got facilities worked out.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I am unconvinced you would enjoy the MW any more than the conference you are in now. It would be a step up in classification but you have almost zero history with any of the schools. Rivalries take a long time to develop. We were all playing each other even before this version of the MW came together. All the night games would be a drag for you too..We get lots of games that start at 8 or even 9PM local PST. It is just weird. I would be just as happy if we lost the tv deal and just played games on Saturday afternoons at 1.
The MW is a pretty solid basketball conference and that seems to be where all the momentum is moving to. Your brand is football..

Kolpack said it best today on 1660. NDSU FB isn't an FCS program
