But the Pac 8 or Pac 6 will for sure. Then we can watch the rest fall like dominoes

It’s not a rivalry if one side never wins. That’s bullying. We haven’t lost to a current FCS school not named SDSU in 7 years. Who is going to be this “regional rival” that’s going to make things interesting? USD? Lol. UNI? We’re such big rivals the MVFC doesn’t even bother protecting our game together. It’ll be 10 years since they’ve beaten us.
The funny thing is you’re right about the regional rivalries. The problem for you is that outside SDSU there are none to be found in FCS.

It is important but Big 10 schools dont need them for attendance. Smaller schools do. Especially for Olympic sports. I guarantee USC will be a sellout no matter what Big Ten team plays them. People want to see good games and teams. Who doesnt want to watch Nebraska or Michigan. If the Vikings only played the Packers every other year, they would still sell out every game. What if the Lions were replaced by the Chiefs or Seahawks? I enjoyed playing JMU and the Montana schools a heck of a lot more than South Dakota or St Thomas. I like playing SDSU because they are really good against us

JMU rivalry wouldn't have even existed without FCS and playoffs. I get what you're saying, it was a great for a bit and they're gone. Good for them, they have a beneficial location.
SDSU, Montana and Montana State. If SDSU doesn't wanna go it's the 2 Montanas. It's still a roadtrip from Fargo but it's a neighboring state and would be instant rivals in the same conference. If no one wants to jump? Puts NDSU in a tough spot...which I guess is why we are still in this situation.
I agree it's time to go but it has to make sense. I'm not in favor of jumping after low hanging fruit just for a FCS to FBS label change.
JMU...Georgia Southern...made sense.
SHSU? We what see.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
FCS is PUD now! yes it was fun, we dominated, but it is a shell of its former self, our "rivalry" matchups we have now are more than PUD.
NDSU into the Mountain West would trigger intense RIVALS with actual fanbases that will actually engage with us!
Boise State, Wyoming, Colorado State would be instant rivals.

FCS is pud. Yes.
Rivalries you mentioned? Maybe Wyoming because of Bohl. The rest? Nah.
Also….and this is important….they don’t want NDSU right now.

If we went to the MW, the only school(s) that would be an instant rival would be ones we brought with us. You're right about that.
It would take years to build up "rivalries", if for nothing more than no school wants to be seen as a rival to a move-up. No different than we don't want to see ourselves in a rivalry with Murray State. But man, the dome would be rocking for the first 4 to 5 years at least with getting MW teams in the dome. And those road venues...I would probably hit every one in the first 4 years. That'll buy us time to build some excitement up.

IMO 2 of those 3 aren’t in the Mountain West if we get an invite.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
NDSU would create a buzz day 1 with our fanbase traveling to these new towns and they will resent the fact that our "lowly d2" school will be kicking their asses on day 1. the rivals will happen instantly

I agree it would be a great move.
But once again. Today...they don't need or want NDSU.
Once the moves and shakes with the "big boy" conferences is complete, the phone might be ringing.

NDSU will travel. But not like to Frisco...or Kansas State...or MN....en masse. The fan base and trips will be divided amongst the road games and we will be just another fan base. Not too mention, maybe one "big" games vs Big 10 or 12 each season non conference? travel gets divided up. Pump it up.

Only you consider us D2.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
If the MWC adds teams it's because the PAC raided them after being further raided by B1G and/or Big12. That means the best MWC teams are gone and depending on how many go they very likely aren't the top G5 conference anymore. In any case, UTEP and NMSU will get invites before the MWC even thinks about FCS schools. We would need to think very carefully about joining a sinking ship.

100% agree. I don't see a scenario where NDSU and Boise State/San Diego State occupy the MW at the same time. If only those two get grabbed, I still really like the MW over our current situation. If the top 2/3 of the conference gets taken away I'd definitely feel apprehensive about jumping.

Unless the MW loses more than 4 schools, I don't think they will add anybody..

The MWC lost TCU, Utah and BYU and managed to carry on just fine..The most successful stretch the conference had was with 8 members..They got to 12 by accident..The MW was formed out of the WAC 16..The big boy conferences can have a jillion members but mid majors are better off keeping it tight, regional and small IMHO. If schools leave for a high major P5 school, they get a hat tip from me..Nothing wrong with ambition. However, The MW also gets 12.7 million bucks from each school that leaves in exit fees...That is why CSU and AFA did not leave for the AAC..That is a lot of scratch for a sideways move..

Understood. Any conference trying to go it with only 8 schools though would need balls of steel right now. If the MW had only 8 right now and either the B12 or PAC sneezed in the direction of the MW the conference would be gone. 8 is also terrible for basketball no?

The Big 12 used to be called the Big 8
The Pac 12 used to be called the Pac 8
Both operated under those numbers for decades..
However, I don't anticipate 4 schools leaving..The ideal number for a mid major is 9, though. 8 conference games for football and 16 for basketball.

Serious question (I'm ignorant about these things) : Would UTEP & NMSU add better media exposure than NDSU?
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I am ignorant about these things too..El Paso is a big city. Las Cruces is pretty small..
Nevada has been in a conference with both schools before. They both are better at basketball than football.
I am not sure what you mean about media exposure..

To me a 9FB/10BB config is smart: 8 conf FB games, 18 conf BB games. If someone plucks two FB schools you still meet NCAA FBS all-sport conference minimum 7 FB members.
After that 9/12 works well too.

NM and west Texas have more media eyeballs. And more potential students.

If I had to guess NDSU has more media exposure than either school. I'll stop myself before I refer to them as 'afterthoughts' in Texas ;)

The total population of MN/WI/IA/MT/ND/SD/NE is ~ 20 M, with no G5 program (although I see one on the horizon)

-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
You have 5 P5s in that Midwest cluster, but TX (28M) will have 6 P5s plus 7 G5s for a total of 13 FBS programs
"Eyeballs" is a misleading word. "Market" is a better term, and I think the answer is clear. NDSU would be a great FB add for a top G5 conference
-

What do you consider to be your "market"?

Midwest + front range + MT, but NDSU FB brand probably has value beyond that
How much depends how the FBS shuffle shakes out. Is there an internal split or do they all leave? What about NCAA hoops? Lots of unknowns right now and I’d be surprised to see much more movement until there is clarity. 2023 most likely …
AAC sits at 14 and the MWC sits at 12

Re: A new and better FBS thread
What are you basing your brand value upon?

Geographic absence of G5 programs, and time zone to some extent. There’s a lot of eyeballs in TX but there’s a lot of FBS teams too. Just my opinion
If anything, this realignment will bump everyone but the P2 down a peg or two. In an ideal world, G5 becomes the new FCS, FCS becomes "D2", etc … but we’ll see how it actually shakes out. I’m curious as to what they decide to do with BB
-

That is your ideal world?

For Bison football, the media market is the state of North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota which is still not much more than 1 million people.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
NDSU going FBS would instantly make NDSU more popular in Twin Cities and that's a big deal. Right now, sports fans in cities know about NDSU
But NDSU in Mountain West definitely gives them a 2nd regional team to root for and gopher fans won't hate on us so much
Also I would carpet bomb Montanas & South Dakota & Those western areas with NDSU swag & propaganda.

Hahahahahaha!
Carpet bombing Montana and SDSU with propaganda would be pretty funny.
Unfortunately, that might cost one meeeleon dollars. But maybe you really mean bumper stickers in the bathrooms?
Somehow I don't see Griz land rooting for the Bison.

Wouldn't a move to the MW or AAC make you an instant afterthought ?

Would literally do nothing for fan base growth in the Twin Cities. God dammit this thread just gives constant humor, doesn't it?

Was literally about to post about how it wouldn't do shit for MSP fan growth.
We are limited to ND and NW MN. Beyond that, limited to alums and their parents/kids. Plenty of them in Minneapolis but thats just how it is.
