The new arena should help change the support for the better IMHO.

Yes, it should but unless they come close to selling out, NDSU cannot afford to leave the Summit. I graduated from NDSU in 1991, basketball attendance was higher in 1991 than today. SU use to led DII to basketball attendance every year or top 5.

That just shows that support for athletics can change over time and that while we might be riding the huge wave of success right now and are having a hard time finding tickets to home games it was just a couple years ago (2011) when you could go online the week of the game and find tickets for the games.... and a couple years before that we had what, 10,000-12,000 in the stands at most games? What changed from then until now? Oh, that's right... national championships! Once we don't win one for a few years in a row OR miss the playoffs a couple times things will be closer to 2010/11 than they are right now... of course they'll ramp back up as soon as we have a good team again. Point being, what is the allure of playing in the "Congratulations on barely having a winning season bowl" and why would our fans want to travel to it every year?
We travel well to FBS games now because we know we can hang with the big boys even though we have a theoretically smaller talent pool and everyone wants to cheer for the underdog. I just don't see our fanbase continuing to travel every week in large numbers to MWC or MAC schools for games we (in the minds of many Bison fans) should win every time. We would no longer be the underdog, our fans will get complacent especially when we aren't playing for anything really. We aren't used to not playing for championships. We aren't used to having a pointless out of conference game in a useless bowl at the end of the season... but if we move up (as things sit currently) that will be reality with the current way "championships" are decided at the FBS level.

Part of the BBall attendance issue is that when games were friday-saturday you got a double header and it was a good deal. Now a big part of that was the Women Success, but that is a great part of it. Add to it the fact that they really haven't updated the arena at all since then leads to what you see today. I think you may see an attendance boost with the update to the arena.

There's a degree of truth to that. I went to a ton of games back then because I lived an hour away and the double headers were a treat.
The Bison Women were super fun to watch because they basically won all the time and some of them were just fun to watch (Rhonda Birch?). The men were competitive with most of their NCC opponents.
What always shocked me was the difference between the men's game and the Women's. When the Men played, the players seemd to move TWICE as fast and the floor shrunk. The free space disappeared.

Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
I have worked hard to stay out of this FBS discussion, but this little blurb on TSN is just to freaking funny to pass up.
As we all know, Willie Fritz took over at Geo Southern and KC Keeler took over for him at Sam Houston. During his press conference he slipped and said that SHSU may be looking to move up to FBS. Say what?
Now, we're talking about an instituition that is so damn poor they couldn't afford to keep their players on campus and have them practice for a full three weeks between the semis and the championship game because they didn't have the money to house and feed the players. So, the players went home, ate mom's cooking, and didn't stay in shape leaving them gasping for air at halftime.
Now they think they have the resources to go FBS? Yeah, right. You really can't make s#!t like this up.

Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
Like I said in a different thread....SHSU to the FBS is just a bunch of hot air.
JMU is the next school moving up....only questions are is where will they go and what will Delaware do?
-
Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
Since you mentioned JMU, here is an interesting article about them preparing for a move to FBS...note the $62.5 millon dollar upgrade to stadium. Has NDSU done any real feasability studies like this?...

Well there are two schools of thought on the shake up. Some think you are better to move up now. I'm not sure who is right or wrong.
That said I think part of JMU moving up is that they aren't happy with the direction of their current conference. They'd rather be in the CUSA with ODU.

The question is will they get that invite?

That is where I am at. If they will land no better than where they will be if they wait for the shakeup, then keep going on this road and prepare for the next step and wait for it. If there really is concern the shakeup will somehow leave us on the outside looking in, then of course there needs to be movement now.
I think the shakeup will change the way the NCAA looks at D1 football from the sense of scholarship commitments vs. stadium size and so on. While NDSU might not look like a viable candidate in its current position, the entire Valley might look attractive in the next era as that level below the super conferences. There are going to be a lot of schools looking for a new level either up or down.

GT has mentioned this numerous times. You can bet he has all the information for a move and a plan in place to make a move when the need arises.

Gene can't make the move until we're finished setting the record for consecutive fcs championships and who knows how many years that will be.
-

I'm thinking it will be one year to set the record for consecutive championships. :p

Here is an interesting read. College football players trying to form a union. That will make it interesting and would make a real playoff much more likely imho.

Nothing will ever come to fruition. 4-team “playoff”, bowls remain, and the P5 will not break away.

I think 8 will happen. Who will be considered in that 8 team playoff? I don’t know.

UCONN is sacrificing it's football to get into the Big East for its basketball program. They'd be better off going down like Georgetown and Villanova instead of UMass-like independent purgatory.

Hopefully the AD at least kicks the tires on the AAC. They might not be interested at all, but it would put NDSU in the high mid-major conference in all sports where it belongs.
-
Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
It's still not soccer, it's not promotion and relegation.
NDSU is still a school in the 117th TV market in the middle of nowhere with roughly the same enrollment as St Cloud State.

yes sir. this thread is a good read if you go back. 2014 was the hottest NDSU was? or Wentz? moving all sports up really would help Softball, Track ….so they beat up on the summit every year, then poof at nationals. Basketball/Volleyball/Baseball would vastly improve with new conferences

Tell me there's a little sarcasm in this quote...but by the way you worded it, I'm afraid your'e being serious.

You mention this from time to time but never provide any documentation that this would happen.

To be fair, it's a little difficult to document HYPE or energy or whatever our kingpin is talking about.
That did seem sorta like a high water mark though for success since football was doing great and the men's basketball team had reached their pinnacle as well.
Hopefully basketball can get back to that level and the SHAC fills up. That's probably the only way to get to El Chapo's Land of Milk and Honey.

yes 2014 was the peak. the plateau has been reached.
Vet80 of course having olympic sports in a bigger conference with better competition will greatly help those sports.

"Of course" doesn't make it a true. You must adhere to the Dr. Phil philosophy: "There is no reality, only perception".

Furthermore you don't move to a big conference to get better, you move because you are better. You need only look as far as the MVC. NDSU provides no value proposition to any better conference in Olympic sports.

Can also move if the conference sees something special or unique in you(see: B1G, Rutgers OR SEC, Mizzou and TAMU)

Fact is there is much much more involved in moving up besides having a good sports program. Look at Penn State. What really got them in the Big Ten?
It was there academics. It was a store house of knowledge academically and world renowned in medical and scientific research as well. Not to mention a huge alumni base and endowments and the academics and research the rest of the schools in the conference can tie in to.
If you want to get in to a good FBS conference you better bring more than a football team to the table.

Yeah this is probably the best point I've ever seen made in this conversation.
