It's rumored cusa financials are so bad member schools are going to have to pay in each year to keep the conference alive and pay debts, rather than receiving any payout. They have bupkiss for a television deal.
FBS is not an automatic financial win, and most bowl payouts are deceptive too, in terms of what the school takes home after expenses.
Sounds amazing doesn't it!

Re: A new and better FBS thread
FBS is fun..However, it isn't easy..
There is no reason NDSU can't thrive at that level if that is where they really want to be..Commitment and money
It doesn't solve all problems and nobody is going to do you any favors. Nobody will care what you did in FCS.
However you miss every shot you don't take.

The basketball credits go to the conference who splits them evenly to the 11 basketball schools but the payout is over a 6 year period. That does tend to work out to 2.5 million total in a 1 bid league. The MW usually gets 2 in.
All of this doesn't add up to your 6-7 million per team per year assertion. The amount is less than you think..It is also no where near enough. Like all G5 conferences budgets are tight..
Additionally for the MWC to want a new school they need to be able to grow the pot, not dilute. Based on NDSU media income, it would seem that NDSU would dilute the payments to other schools, thus the desire to add exists. For example, $45 million dividend by 9 teams (easy math, I knew they have more, but need to keep it simple for lakes), if you add a 10th team. the conference will want that pot to be at least $50 million. Maintain at $5 million per school. If NDSU only adds $3 million of value, the payout drops to $4.8 million. College sports like a business is not going to add a dilutive compenent.
Compare to the BIG 10. Why did they add Rutgers? The NYC media market was worth more than the cost of adding a "poor sports program". NDSU just does not have the media income presence to help a MWC. This is just on the media side, travel hasn't even been discussed.
But thanks Lakes for trying. keep contacting, RDO, Sanford and the other two big business' in ND to sponsor.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
For the first time in the almost 9 years that I've been part of the NDSU community, I finally was offered a chance this year to purchase NDSU football season tickets. I was tempted, but ultimately passed on them. A few months ago, I would have jumped on the chance as I thought eventual FBS was a certainty. But it clearly is not certain. If there was even a public commitment by NDSU to move to FBS in the next 3-4 years, I would have purchased the tickets to lock them up. But I'm just not interested in watching most of these FCS teams anymore. The good ones, and some semi-good ones, have all left. Apparently I'm not the only one unwilling to pay those prices for FCS games. Otherwise, I wouldn't have had a shot at season tickets in the first place.

If and or when the move happens what do you think your chance of getting tickets will be? Buying tickets is also about supporting the program.

Yep. I'd like to support an FBS program. I know there's plenty of people here that prefer FCS. Maybe if we go FBS, they will then give up their tickets rather than hoard them only to consistently leave the game for the parking lot after the first half.
In any case, the point I was making is that remaining silent on FBS cost them my purchase. I'm just two tickets. What...$1,000 or so? But there are probably others like me. If they are planning someday to go FBS, they should say so, because I'd be buying tickets right now. On the other hand, if they know that they have no intention of going FBS, I suppose that's maybe why they say nothing. They hope someone like me is still going to buy tickets if the FBS possibility is there. In my case, they'd be wrong. I need to know that FBS is in the plans if I'm gonna invest in football tickets. Relying on those who are happy with FCS apparently is no longer enough, as they now have a surplus of tickets.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
if NDSU went Mountain West tomorrow, every ticket would be sold overnight for the Fargodome.
5 games at Fargodome
1 game at US BANK 50,000+

New Mexico State's schedule this year is: Nevada, Minnesota, UTEP, Wisconsin, Hawaii, FIU, New Mexico, San Jose State, UMass, Lamar, Missouri, Liberty. We could go FBS independent and we'd sell out the Fargodome and US Bank overnight. I get it that most of NMSU's good games are away. But if NDSU had this schedule, it would generate a ton of fan interest. If NDSU beats all of these teams, we are in the top-15 for sure and maybe ranked even higher.
Hell, I even think we sell all our tickets if we go CUSA.

Now go do Sam Houston State's Schedule.
Definitely my favorite part of this is just making shit up like it's automatic.

You don’t want to trade places with New Mexico State? Lol
Some (Most?) FBSers on here do more to hurt our argument than help it…

You're truly missing the point. Connecting dots are hard for some. I'm not saying we are on par with NMSU. Obviously we are better and I don't want us to be NMSU when we grow up. But if this is NMSU's schedule, what would ours be? In any case, I'm more interested in NDSU football if we are playing MN and NV and even HI and SJSU, than any FCS school. For those more interested in WIU and Drake, then whatever. Enjoy. I don't know why I'm here still giving a shit. You guys are hopeless.

and this is why we are losing our fanbase. bum spells it out nicely.
we have fuckkng plateaud for years now, I love the players, the parents the grandparents we party with on the road, but holy shit. back in 2011 and 2013 this fanbase was THE PLACE TO BE. the HOTSPOT, THE COOL THING.... Larson is a wimp, we get it, he doesn't have the Balls to do it. once dean met Kristi he was ready to retire and didn't need to push the envelope.
our ONLY hope would be for President Cook to say. fuck it, it's year 1, I'm gonna be a legend and go FBS ...THE AD BE DAMNED..

Hopeless, realistic...same thing. When points are fabricated or one has to "connect the dots"...and a thread gets to 600 pages of peopling mumbling the same shit over and over again, then obviously the answers aren't easy to come by.
It is a great schedule. A few money games to get their asses handed to them.... Can't wait to see their record come the end of November, 4 wins sounds amazing. "we are NDSU" doesn't get them that schedule.

True, schools like Wisconsin and Minnesota won't be lining up to play us just because we are FBS with more scholarships. They want easy wins OOC.
Joining MWC would be the best way to ensure some quality games, OOC we are more likely to get MAC games, maybe with a UTEP type mixed in.
Schools like Georgia Southern and App St won't want to travel to play us, they schedule more regionally.
This is why joining the correct conference is so important, those are the only teams you are guaranteed to get on your schedule.

This piece gives you some idea how ooc payouts work. This is fairly typical for MW schools.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Hey, I see this is my 1,000th post. Fitting that I am posting in my favorite thread. But rather than mix it up with you guys, I'm just gonna say to everyone...have a great day today. If you're at work, I hope it goes well. Indeed, thank you for working. If you're serving (or have served) in the active military, reserves, or Guard, then thank you for your service. Likewise if you serve or have served as a first responder or do any kind of service work for others or volunteerism. The country doesn't work without you, so thank you!
We can argue again during my 1,001st post. But for now, have a good one everyone. Go Bison.

Surprisingly few western teams have moved up in the last 20-30 years, almost all have been South/East teams.
The two most recent I can find are Nevada in 1992, and Boise in 1996. Akron joined the MAC in 1987. UNLV was 1978.
Montana had a couple opportunities they said no to.
