"Absent a national standard*, which I don’t see coming, I think it’s inevitable" Swarbrick said. "Mid-30s would be the logical time"
* Gee I wonder who he’s referring to?
So the long-awaited FB "split", which is shaping up to occur WITHIN the P5 and not between the G5 and P5, is more than 10 years away
Interesting that the AD of Notre Dame, who has a cozy half in/half out relationship with the ACC would put a time line of the mid-2030s for this to happen. Doesn't the ACC GOR expire in 2036? Why yes it does.
Unless something changes, that is when the ACC blows up and some head to the Big Ten and some head to the SEC. PAC will then be affected with the top properties from that conference headed to either the BIG or SEC. Major college football will be the BIG/SEC. The next level will be whatever remains of the P5 plus some G5 moves ups. Rest of G5 and FCS below that.
It's already started with the Big 12. None of those schools will make the cut because if they could they'd already have left. It's already a leftovers and G5 move-ups conference.

This is what I see developing also by mid 2030's
Tier 1: SEC/B1G. (This is pro/semi-pro with $100M+ yearly budgets)
Tier 2: Remaining P5 and upper G5 that join them
Tier 3: Remaining G5 and upper FCS that will join
I don't think ALL of FCS will be Tier 3, but I do think it will include a good number of schools from MVFC, Big Sky and CAA.

So, reading between the lines of your post, NDSU stays the course and remains in FCS until this hypothetical realignment occurs in 2035 or so.
Got it … Thanks for clarification. Admin could just come out and say it and put this while thing to bed. I wonder why they don’t
Sorry but that most def sounds like FCS forever, at least to me. Best of luck with it all …

Making a prediction about what will happen is not the same thing as wanting it to happen. ~10 years isn't forever either. FCS Forever doesn't exist, just stop with that stupid strawman.

If we're still FCS in 10 years we'll lose over half the fanbase, and that includes me. My first sports memory was the MSUM game in 2000. Grew up in north Fargo, went to every home game I possibly could between that MSUM game and when I graduated college and moved out of state in 2015. Still watch every game, but that's starting to slide. Pay thousands into my parents' season tickets group so that they'll keep them. 10 more years in FCS is forever.
I guess the good news is that if we're still FCS at that point the games will be more competitive. Our program won't continue at this clip with 5k attendance games.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
What about the Pac-12 schools with big budgets like Oregon and USC? I can't see Uncle Phil (Knight) being happy that Ducks football isn't at the highest level of competition.

Yeah, I don't think that's a very likely scenario myself.
Assuming this all ever happens, the big question is - which level is Bison FB on? 2 or 3? Just have to be there to find out I guess.
I have no problem with NDSU ditching the MVFC and going FBS without any of the other Dakota schools, just in case you were wondering. No problem whatsoever.
In somewhat related news - https://www.espn.com/college-sports/...president-2023
Hope springs eternal

The “prestigious” Norte Dame scheduled a game against an FCS opponent in the name of diversity. It so happens that that school is an HBCU …. Sounds like diversity to me.

At least a few of these schools are likely to join B1G or SEC, which will become mega conferences that can more easily split off.
By the mid 2030's you could be looking at 20-24 teams in each, or about 48 schools that are "Tier 1".
If they don't split off, they will dominate the CFP slots, with huge advantages in $$$ for players and coaching/staff.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
https://www.si.com/college/2022/04/2...mittee-changes
This is the article that's generating buzz. With an internal P5 split clearly implicit, hard to imagine this would move very quickly. Mid 2030s seems about right.
Also hard to imagine the P5 dregs and the upper G5 feeling very generous (see FCS move ups) after getting dumped by the elites, and if all of this plays out, it sounds like power will reside in the individual conferences. Haves and have-nots will be pushed even further apart, at multiple levels.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Perception is Reality for alot of people/fans.
NDSU perception across the country is we are trophy chasing & afraid to move up (yea yea we know we need an invite)
Will President Cook do anything Day 1? Will he hit the ground running and want to make a Big Splash?? I sure hope so!! because I'm seeing way way waaaaaaaaaaayy too many 35-55 year olds that were die hard NDSU fans in 2010-2017 not even interested anymore & that's scary people. NDSU has to figure this out soon. NDSU football games/Tailgate WAS the HOT THING for those years, the last few have waned, we need to get that spark and run it back!

Have a link? Exactly WHO besides yourself is saying this?
Not sure what you expect Cook to do? Proclaim we will be FBS?
Boise St likely goes to Big 12 within the next couple years, thats our opportunity.
In the meantime, relax and enjoy our Frisco trips, life's not that bad really.

There are usually comments in stories/posts about another FCS championship where people say NDSU should just move up to the FBS or that we must prefer being a big fish in a small pond.

With the people that I generally find myself with, I get just as many people wondering why NDSU would even consider moving up given the regular opportunity to be successful in the status quo and their assumption that we'd move up and suck by comparison. As of late, I also hear many people suggesting that the FBS is going to be an absolute shitshow as NIL and the transfer portal gain more steam. These folks talk about many major programs becoming defacto second tier because they can't afford to financially compete with Alabama, Clemson, Texas, Oklahoma, and Ohio State for players. There's also a question about the way some of the more prestigious universities might shy away from their schools being just part of a farm system.
I'm pro FBS but this does affect my view of our future home.

In Texas where people actually watch other schools play football, most wonder why we don't go to the Mountain West and compete for conference championships there Day 1.
The fact that conferences don't want a school from ND goes right over their heads though...

You sure about that? ;)
Broadly speaking, it seems to me that the lefties want to stay FCS and the righties want to move up, although there are obvious exceptions
What does the program want? What do the former players want? I’d put more weight on that. Fans are fickle, especially spoiled ones

Can you name 5 people on here that want to stay FCS? Lefty/righty seems to be a stretch...at least to me. I can't think of a single person who has stated we should stay FCS. Now, there are plenty that will say don't go FBS no matter the opportunity...but that is way different than wanting to just stay FCS.

A lot of people think that. I have a cousin in GA who follows us loosely because of me. He says that all the time. Another cousin in Goopher land who went to NDSU says that about us as well.

I'd like to see you point out anybody that's actually said that. FCS Forever simply doesn't exist.

What I want doesn’t matter.
What should NDSU do? What will NDSU do?
I think we can compete with the G5 day one. I think the last time we moved up it happened when we had more resources than we could spend in DII and we’re confident that we could raise the funds to compete in IAA and that is probably what will happen again this time.

C'mon man, that's a copout. Admin cares what the fans think, I'm sure.
I honestly can't tell what the overall fan sentiment is, TBH. Hence my joke ...
I think they should jump on a move that presents a better opportunity, and it will take some serious work on Admins part to get that. I have no idea how much work has been done on that front, and in this climate I wouldn't expect to know until after the fact.

Agreed. Neither am I, but my own perspective evolves in unpredictable ways. For example:
Speaking in the 100 % hypothetical - for obvious reasons given the constraints - how would people feel if NDSU somehow got a FB-only invite to the Sunbelt, if say Mo State was a full conference member?
Again, 100 % hypothetical, so don't go postal on me please.
