Re: What sort of thread have you made for us? A Wentz thread, if you can keep it.
On a related note, the signal for a safety is one of my favorite football signals, particulary when it's done by excited defenders after scoring a safety :)

That muffed thing that results in a touchback is stupid. Football needs more safeties. 2- point safeties are awesome, but too rarely occur. That safety signal the refs do above their head is simultaneously the Greatest and yet The Most Ridiculous looking referee signal in all of sports. And we need more of it.

Certain calls come with a motion to the signal. Like the false start penalty has the spinning hands. The safety signal should come with a vigorous hip thrust to provide more emphasis to what just happened.

Yes but there is an exception. If a player intercepts a pass, recovers an opponent's fumble or catches or recovers a kick inside the 5 yard yard line and their original momentum takes them into the end zone where the ball becomes dead in their team's possession this would be a safety. But the momentum exception says in this case you bring the ball back to where they gained possession and they are awarded a new series.
This is something we talk about all the time but it very rarely happens. I think I can only remember it happening once in the 20+years I've been officiating. We almost had one this year on an interception but the kid ran it out and then took a knee at the 2. I think this exception exists fairly similar in all 3 rule sets.

Inside officiating pet peave. The NFL signal for touchback is different than the NCAA and NFHS signal. NFL is the arm to your side and waving it up and down. In NCAA and NFHS you have your hand over your head like a fair catch signal. I see high school officials all the time the NFL signal. It tells me they only partially study the rule book and pay attention at meetings. It's a stupid pet peave because everyone knows what they are signaling. I don't know why we can't just use the same signal.

Really? Nobody is going to acknowledge this? I thought it was awesome lol. Thanks Herd.

I’m assuming it is, and would come about somehow from an extra-point try/kick, as that is a 1 point attempt, as I assume you know.
