I forgot about Boise St. definitely although I would not be sold on San Jose state even if they are in the perfect spot regionally

Markets and media money drive almost all conference realignments. Having a very large school and fanbase, along with elite academic status helps to a degree. But it really comes down to the money. Conferences want to grow their per-school payouts. Its why teams like Rutgers got invited to the B10, not due to their on field performance.
Ultimately media money/deal will determine whether PAC is able to offer enough to rebuild with the "best of G5" or they have to accept a lesser option. How attractive are the San Diego and Las Vegas markets? Are they too saturated? Media money will also determine if PAC2 get a shot at joining an existing P4 conference. Thus far the answer has been no.

I think they will become a regular part of FCS playoffs. They also would have likely been invited to join CUSA had they not been transitioning. Rumor was the NCAA ruling that they could not skip FCS transition is what kept them out. They've been on CUSA shortlist, and are likely to get invited should CUSA decide to expand or backfill. It would be a good geographic fit.
Our best option/hope is still whatever comes out of the PAC/MWC reshuffle, or potentially the MAC.
Our best option was to join CUSA when they offered us an invite, and then use that as a stepping stone because other conferences would much rather steal from fellow FBS conferences. We blew it.

It doesnt make any sense to me. Tarleton and Stephenville Texas are so far from the mind of anyone in TX there’s no value there. Then for travel you’ll have teams flying to DFW and then bussing for over 2 hours (if there’s no traffic) to get to stephenville. Hell Boulder is harder to get to than Fargo.
Stephenville and Tarleton State are capable of supporting a D2 program and nothing more. They bring no eyeballs, no recruiting benefit and no travel solutions. There is literally 0 upside to them. If CUSA wants them it’s because they’re a (semi) warm body.

There were fairly credible stories CUSA was interested in NDSU and may have invited. They are the exception to G5 conferences in terms of geography. They are very spread out although all their members are generally south. There are schools both east and west of Tarleton so they are technically inside the current footprint. Fargo is not. I believe the closest school is WKU, and they are 1000 miles from Fargo.

I guess what I’m trying to say is I understand why NDSU isn’t on conferences’ lists but Tarleton is no better from a travel or recruiting standpoint and is much worse in every other measurable.

Because they are in the footprint of these other conferences and NDSU is not. There are schools in CUSA in all 4 directions from their campus. A couple are in the same state, granted El Paso is as far from Stephenville as Fargo is from NIU. I'm sure they is some allure to having a school in Texas so teams are in state not often for recruits to come see them. Not sure how much of a factor that is, but it may play some role. Plus if you are Liberty you can tell mom or do if far away, but we could be playing closer to your home once or twice per year.

I hope it comes out that NDSU was not going to get an invite to CUSA or any other "below NDSU" FBS conference because if we were waiting for the the ideal situation instead of jumping on an opportunity, then that is a complete lack of understanding of how the college football landscape was and is changing and a total failure on the AD and President.
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Rumors that PAC is inviting Boise, Fresno, Colorado State, and San Diego State.
Might be an opening coming up for NDSU to finally make the jump.
