Most POTUs are placeholders. Their prime directive is "don’t fuck it up". People like Chapman are few and far between, the exception rather than the rule, and they usually cause the end of their own careers by pushing the envelope, especially in a place like ND where the envelope is easily pushed. They are driven by passion and competitiveness, not caution or status quo.
What matters most to DB is that you – the alums – love him dearly. Taking NDSU to FBS is chock full of risk. Damn scary risk, at that. Risk that he wasn’t willing to take for fear of losing your love, especially the love of the FCS lifers. Hence, he adopted the "wait for the split" line and it served him well. I suspect Cook will do the same thing, but I will give him the benefit of the doubt and hope that he sees the light.
But why wouldn’t he be complacent? NDSU FB is doing absolutely spectacularly for what it is. If you ran the numbers in your head as an incoming POTU, you would likely come to the same conclusion – play the "wait for the split" line and keep riding the FCS gravy train. Avoid the risk. Let the next guy deal with it. This approach works great because it only becomes an issue after the fact, when it’s too late, when the landscape has changed irreversibly and FCS doesn’t look the same. And odds are good you’ll have moved on by then.
When the shit went down, Aresco basically said "all interested schools apply to the AAC". That’s how it works in FBS. A good invite will never fall in your lap. You have to ask for it. Hell, you have to lobby for it, go out and get the one you want. It’s obvious at this point that NDSU didn’t do that, because there’s no way you could hide that fact in ND.
So, stop blaming ML, since it’s not his job, and accept the reality of the situation. That way if it ever happens, it will be a joyous surprise. You don’t have any control over it anyways.
Wow, you have crap for expectaions of what a leader should be.......DB and ML suck at it. Leaders just don't stick with the status quo. They lead.......leading assumes risk!

Notre Dame is breaking its precedent of not playing FCS. Gonna play Tennessee State.

I wonder why. What a random opponent, too.

Eddie George is the coach. Ohio State alum. Marcus Freeman. Ohio State alum. Two black men maybe trying to help out the HBCU community. Thats the only thing I could think of but who knows.

Very possible and understandable. Relationships are so critical in everything that happens behind the scenes. I had a good talk with the person who handles scheduling for Notre Dame. He shared they would never play an FCS team because they don't need to. They have their choice of who they want to play and where. And they could go to any city and play any team and likely sell out. I was surprised when I saw they scheduled Tennessee State but these connections make sense. And there is no way they lose the game. No guarantee if a win if they play the Bison.

I'm with you on this one. I'd say it's Boise State announcing a new fund raising campaign or that they are updating locker rooms or some other meaningless move. Usually the bigger the hype the more it's a nothing project. I'm not even getting remotely excited about this one.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
You’d think a conference move would have had tons of rumors floating around for weeks.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I mean the whole video is about moving on.... so it's a big mind-bleep if it's a nothing burger

The wording of the video is definitely interesting.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
This has been out on YouTube since November 2021. The tweet is cut from it.
I suspect they've hit some milestone related to the initiatives.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GX2rJW3e7QU
Maybe they're adding "Canadian ice soccer" !!!

Re: A new and better FBS thread
If this is a huge Affiliation announcement someone needs to find out how BSU kept it so tight lipped...that's a huge milestone in itself.
Pretty sure its a Facilities release and just means upgrading for the next step in the future. If I'm wrong then wow what a feat to keep it silent!

Boise State's big announcement:

The words "new" and "conference" are not in that link.

interesting nugget from today's podcast with Matt Brown. He said that the Sunbelt has been in discussions with Missouri State. Nothing imminent but that something could be happening "soon"

Rumors have been flying that MSU is looking to pair up with WKU to either MAC or SBC.
WKU wants out of the CUSA trainwreck asap.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Murray State scuttlebutt should be in this thread
MVFC teams literally QUIT on us last spring. yet some of you wanna stay here?
if Bresciani is lame duck here for 1 more month, HE SHOULD FLY OUT TO MOUNTAIN WEST OFFICES & sit down with Craig Thompson
like how the fuck hasn't that happened in last 5 years?

He probably has talked with more g5 presidents and conference presidents the. You have any idea serving on the boards or committees he has recently
https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/com...eb8Minutes.pdf
Little to no representation for g5 conferences except for him
https://www.ncaa.org/sports/2021/8/1...committee.aspx
And here again people were reaching out to him as well
So to be brutally honest there maybe is no inroads to be made which move us up to fbs as think it’s a gimme
I want you to for one time to tell me where the extra 20 million comes from annually

Ironic that the only thing Matt Larsen has said on the subject of FBS is that “the money” is not any problem whatsoever. Not sure why people stay fixated on that piece of it.

Your really think another 20 million a year is not a problem? Maybe it’s not a problem because it’s not happening
As many are dropping season tickets as they don’t feel the price is right

They’re pushing it hard on 1660 too, and $$ never comes up (unless the rest of the MVFC does).
FB-only of course.
I think they would know what is possible better than any of us.
This is the time to talk about it, not during the season next fall IMO, so get it out of your systems

$20 million might be needed to get us ultimately where we want to go in terms of success but that’s a growth process. Our current budget wasn’t in place the moment we moved back in 2003. That’s not to say that more money won’t be needed, just that it isn’t $20 million day one. People stay fixated on it because their minds are small and they can’t fathom that things evolve over time.

We would need 20 million if we were going P5. I like your enthusiasm, but I think right now we’re just looking at G5 first.

Our current budget is already higher than the bottom of the MW. Add in the additional media money and NCAA tournament money and all of the sudden we’re above the middle of the MW day one in the MW. No extra student fees, no extra donations, etc.
Day. One.
As a little extra adder, we could charge the same amount of student fees as UND, and adding all that together we’d have the same athletic budget as Boise State. I did a breakdown in one of these threads a while back. Should put it in my signature.

Interesting. I missed your breakdown earlier but will look for it. I do think the money aspect is more doable than people claim.

That's of little value to an FBS conference because of the way the NCAA DI rules are written:
Quote:
20.02.9 Football Bowl Subdivision Conference.
A conference classified as a Football Bowl Subdivision conference shall be comprised of at least eight full Football Bowl Subdivision members that satisfy all bowl subdivision requirements. An institution shall be included as one of the eight full Football Bowl Subdivision members only if the institution participates in the conference schedule in at least six men's and eight women's conference-sponsored sports, including men's basketball and football and three women's team sports, including women's basketball.
FBS conferences want full members to protect that FBS conference status.
