There are three monumental obstacles to a successful FBS move.
1. A conference invitation.
2. Coming up with an extra $16 million per year.
3. The shakeup in the BCS means that you could be committing to something that might no exist in a year. Remember the WAC Attack?
To address Problem 1, the LakesBison Plan is to insult everybody who brings it up. Maybe he wants another "pump-it-up" email campaign of direct marketing to MWC Presidents and Athletic Directors? Which begs the question: Are you f**king high?
To address Problem 2, the LakesBison Plan is to insult the intelligence of everybody who brings it up. "Blah, blah, blah, profit" is not a plan, btw.
To address Problem 3, the LakesBison Plan is to pretend it isn't a problem, which might be true. It might be an opportunity.
So you have no plan to get there, you can't make a business case as to why we'd want to get there, and all you do is insult people who have helped pay to make NDSU football what it is now (you know, the ones who actually donate to NDSU and view it as something more than a party venue.)
* And, yeah, I'm aware that Lakesbison=dragonfan=strongman.
I think if there was a strong push to move up we could get a conference invite. It wouldn't be a very good conference more than likely but I think we would find one.
The part where I'm torn is that I love the playoff deciding a real champion but the team we played against in the national championship game brought no more than 2,000 fans! Couple that with the chance this year and the reality last year of people missing the start of the national championship for a meaningless midseason basketball game going late.
Boise State realistically would be ceiling for moving up. I don't know about the rest of you but if we were bowl eligible year in and year out I don't see 18,000 fans going to the Beef O' Brady's bowl.
The best thing for college football in my eyes is for the big 5 to break away and to come up with a truly tiered system where each tier has a playoff. Current FCS teams like NDSU, Montana, YSU, etc. could join back up with teams like GSU, App. St., Wyoming, etc. in the top level below the big 5. FCS bottom feeders like UN_ could be in the next level down.
Or in a dream world college football could go to the European soccer style relegation.

NDSU needs to increase ticket prices by 20%; need to start their own cable network to televise sporting events and Teammakers needs to do a better job and raise 20% more. Teammakers is underachieving especially in Western North Dakota. The aforementioned would clearly be enough to join a football only conference and compete for a conference title immediately. And don't tell me they are not underachieving with the BILLIONS OF OIL MONEY IN THE STATE.

Great plan by the way. Get more money! I'm going to employ that one at home. I'll be a millionaire a week from Tuesday!! Then, I'll 'do a better job' and get more money, and move on to billionaire! And to think, to be a millionaire/billionaire all I needed to do all along was 'do a better job'....and get more money!

But nice try at deflection. Come up with solid concrete facts on funding instead of theoretical pie in the sky bullshit.
What are the current student fees per semester and what would be generated if they were doubled?

Thought they in the neighborhood of $100/yr that goes towards athletics.
UN_ raised their student fees to generate over $1 million a year for the move to DI.
If NDSU students would vote for a $1,500/yr increase in student fees it would be MAC Attack time!
@LakesDragonStrongbad- go check out western ND. Lots of Wyoming/Longhorns/Okie stuff in the oilfields, not so much NDSU.

They are not under achieving. See I CAN tell you that.
They have raised more money every year than in the past. The real issue is you dont understand the mission of Team Makers. You also dont belong to it and dont donate to it. But for some reason you are critical of this organization.
My suggestion is grow up. Forget your butt hurt and become part of the solution and not continually being part of the problem.

I was on the Finance Commission for almost my entire 4 years at NDSU and went through all 4 of the spring budgeting grinds. The last budget I saw was in 1980 and we allocated around $170,000 for mens athletics, and I know it took about a $20,000 jump either in 79 or 80 when Sponberg was seriously looking at moving up to D1 and wanted more money to show we were serious. I also remember the bitching from 90% of the students who felt athletics was a waste of money. I can well imagine how things would go now if you jumped fees a lot.
BTW, Men's Athletics was getting about $20 a student in those days. Another problem was Title 9 (?), which said womens athletics had to be funded the same rate. We got around that slightly, but any huge increase in mens funding meant more to womens as well.

Why doesn't NDSU just: a.) go get more money b) join a conference after this cold snap c) become the number one rival of every school in the nation d.) get even more money e.) grow the perfect and most loyal coach in the NDSU biology labs f.) go get even more money
I don't get why we just can't go out and do this! Come on! Get on board people!

you needed 13 pages to realize this?
lakes has been touting this for 2 years and finally getting the recognition he deserves. NDSU is the cream of the crop for football right now. everybody now knows about the Bison. they can easily become a brand, household program by moving up. FBS commish's have to be drooling at the thought of adding them. I hope lakes is out there addressing this right now

Prolly helps that their enrollment is over 60k now as well (11k in 1978 and 18k in 1989 when they moved to I-AA).
It also doesn't hurt UCF that they are in Orlando instead of Fargo. I love Fargo, but the past tells us that NDSU may not have FBS conferences lining up to issue an invitation. Geography is a real issue and one that we cannot control.

Yabut, oil money + student fees ( still have $120/semester to be below UN_)* increasing enrollment to 75k + lakes joining Team Makers = MAC Attack!
Tuesday night football FTW!

How much of that is online, there is a huge difference in those kinds of students beyond the obvious.

It was a good tailgate, but keep in mind, Friday night is different because a majority of the people don't have to go to work the next day and a later night is not a problem. Now play games in the middle of the week and the numbers will drop due to travel distance and work problems the next day. Not all people will have this problem but the number would be noticeable to some degree.

Fans that are advocating for a move to FBS are not thinking logically right now.

The problem with the FBS crowd is they refuse to accept the reality of the situation. Can't see the forest for the trees and its a little annoying. The only plan they can come up,with is 'get more money' like it grows on trees. If sometime in the future Gene, and others decide that jump is necessary ill trust them, but the constant dissatisfaction with the Bison now makes the FBS crowd look bad.

It's true, we should just see if the NSIC still has a home for us. Why look forward when we can look in our rear view mirror?!

That argument is mind bogglingly stupid. FCS is a perfectly good situation for NDSU. They can be with peer institutions instead of competing with 50k schools with 100 million budgets.
I don't even have a word for how absurd the DII comments are.

Well it won't be DII when they move up and become our peers.
-
Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
NDSU has more peers in the FBS than the FCS.
The reality is that the FCS isn't a great fit for NDSU either...we are stuck in the middle. Both sides make relevant points, I'd love to see this top of the FCS and bottom of the FBS merger happen that some talk about because then and only then we would have what I would call the proper fit.

EZ, you are way too smart to believe that. Nobody I know wants to get trapped in the new D2. I am confident that NDSU will make the right decision at the right time.

NDSU has as many peers in FCS as non-peers. They are right about in the middle.
I agree completely with your sentiments.

NDSU would be in the middle of enrollment in the top 3 public school conferences (Big Sky, MVFC, CAA).
We're not like your favorite school Texas. Even a little bit.

Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
I guess I don't get the allure of being FBS. Best case scenario for a 20 year period would be a combination of 13 bowl game like Beef O'Brady, Potato, and Go Daddy Bowl and maybe one Fiesta Bowl.
