I don't think so. If we are not in FBS two seasons from now, we will be shut out.

Hopefully it’s a conference that moves the meter but that’s not likely on that amount of time.

I can certainly agree with you on that

NDSU AD Larsen: “The one thing I would say is if NDSU wants to be attractive to other leagues, having a half-filled dome isn’t very attractive.”

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Per Forum:
"There have been some in the team’s fan base who are clamoring for NDSU to make the move to FBS with the Bison winning eight FCS national championships since 2011. That overwhelming success has caused some to lose interest in attending games.
'I have heard that a little bit,' Larsen said. 'The one thing I would say is if NDSU wants to be attractive to other leagues, having a half-filled dome isn’t very attractive.'”
Really? A little bit? Minimizing the clamoring does not inspire any confidence that he sees FBS as part of the solution.

I can understand the frustration from an NDSU leadership perspective. The product on the field is awesome and yet the fans aren't showing up. That being said, there aren't many options for the average fan to show their frustration. They can email ML and others. They can post on social media. They can call in to radio shows. They can discuss it with their peers. However, the best way to impact decisions is by speaking with their dollars which means not attending games, buying merchandise or engaging with the program in the same way as previously. It is the NDSU leadership's job to find out why people are making those choices and make changes to bring the fans and their dollars back into the fold. Shaming the fans for making a choice that is a direct reflection of their views on the program is ridiculous. This is where he comes off as tone deaf. If ML says "We are well aware of the attendance and are working diligently to address the reasons for the decline. We want to acknowledge the frustrations and do everything in our power to continue to improve the gameday experience so that our student athletes can play in front of a full, loud and passionate Fargodome. It is in the programs best interest to have our attendance be as high as possible in order for us to achieve higher aspirations for our program." This still makes the point that attendance is a big driver in selling our program to an FBS conference but he does it without placing the blame on the fans for making a choice that is in direct response to actions or lack of actions taken by the NDSU leadership.
This is why ML gets criticism. Own the situation. It isn't all his fault and the solutions aren't all within his control but he's paid handsomely to work with his staff to find solutions that can improve the situation.

100% this. He's stuck his foot in his mouth a couple times recently. I think gameday ops needs a memelord and DJ to troll the other team over the scoreboard and sound system over the course of the game.

Too right. I posted a link here a few days back to a UofM page that talks about their Fan Advisory Board. https://gophersports.com/sports/2018...ory-board.aspx
If I were ML I would convene one of these post haste. It would be populated with a diverse cross section of fan representatives spanning multiple generations, socio-economic strata, geographical regions, etc. Members not just drawn from TM nor even all alums. Get the whole cross section and solicit feedback/guidance regarding how to increase engagement. I would these peeps operating in crisis mode at this point.
But, that's just me.

Absolutely! It sends a positive message that they are hearing what the fans are saying. Maybe some fans will re-engage just knowing that improvements are being explored. As has been stated ad nauseum on here, the changes to the game day experience have been few and far between over the past 5+ years. Most rational fans want to see progress. They don't expect perfection.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Ahh yes, the ol' blame the fans bit. That usually works well. "It's the fault of the people who pay my paycheck!"
Too bad his little brain can't figure out fans have stopped coming because our athletic department has stayed stagnant (in every way other than football performance) for 4/5 years. The athletes themselves and the fans deserve better than this sticking of his head in the ground.
Chapo certainly has an abrasive way of saying it, but he's not wrong. Larsen been coasting and he's looking for scapegoats now that the cows have come home to roost.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
He's either coasting or doesn't have a slam dunk option such as JMUs situation. But yes, blaming the fan base is not going to help.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Florida State should move up from the ACC so they don't get their best recruits poached by the SWAC's Jackson State.

There isn't going to be a "slam dunk" option in NDSU's case. He and his staff are going to need to earn their money in the short term. If attendance continues to decline, it is going to affect season ticket sales and teammaker funding. Which in turn is going to hurt not just the football program but all other sports at NDSU.

Yeah I get that. There is no easy answer for NDSU unfortunately.

That quote has me pissed, the school has done nothing to enhance the gameday experience over this run. Just the same thing year after year, just coasting because they got fat and happy on our success. They want sellouts, they gotta earn them as well and put in some effort. Fans are already paying P5 prices, for a great FCS product but you just can't sit back and expect everything to sell itself.

Well they haven't done "nothing," they made me join teammakers to keep our season tickets haha.
I walked around during the Souther Ill game looking for something edible (couldnt tailgate that day got to game right at kick off) and it was flat out pathetic.

The food is fucking horrible. I think the only reason people buy it is because they have the drunk munchies.

Yeah, all they have done is ask fans for more and more money while offering the same or less.
The food is very sad, I used to get the Famous Daves pulled pork but that is long gone. The pizza is horrendous, it is like imitation dominoes. Can't even get real crappy pizza. I settle for popcorn or sometimes bacon on a stick but even that has been closed at times.

Lame answer. He should do his job and sell his product instead of blaming his customers for the declining sales on his watch.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Haven’t read/perused this thread in awhile, but WOW—have to say I agree with most of the recent posts re: Larson and the Gameday experience. Not that I’m overly interested in the experience, as I’m there to watch the game more than anything, but the concessions absolutely suck and haven’t changed/beem upgraded, the management of people on the concourse had gotten worse (less tolerable maybe?) and everything has otherwise remained stangnant, yet Larsonis calling the fans out after requiring/requesting more $$ from us without doing anything on his side of the ledger.
I feel we are in a bad situation with lame-duck Prez, as he won’t call Larson to task for this BS at this stage of his tenure, and the new Prez won’t feel like he can until he earns his own respect/authority on campus. Meanwhile, Larson feels untouchable. Guess what Matt, we have voices/a say in this greater than you think/understand apparently.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
NDSU football is analogous to a company with a great engineering team that develops a remarkable product, but has a terrible marketing team that doesn’t know how to sell it. And right now Matt Larsen is the CEO of that company blaming customers for not buying it.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Remember when Dean B would say. "I'm from Texas A&M, they value D1 Athletics...and I'd like to see NDSU be a mini version of them"
Dean could've been a legend forever if he would've gotten FBS done b4 he left.... he gets blame too
Todd Phelps is just happy to be here, small timer
Matt Lein is a Augustana kid, D3, I watched him at UNI all.wide eyed & couldn't believe how big time that was.
those are our leaders in this. Jeremy Jorgensen tried & then had to leave.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
20 minutes of halftime in the FCS semifinal game. ........... 23 seconds on the Fcs game..... another reason to leave..

Re: A new and better FBS thread
NDSU is now 149-12 since dynasty...
150-12 after 9th title.
I remember fighting with some on here in 2013 saying. "what we gonna do, win 10 titles and 150 games, THEN you'll move up?"
well. we have reached that point

Radio guys last night beat that idea in to the mud unless the G5 breaks away and has its own championship.

If we’ve learned one thing in the last 20 years or so it’s that you absolutely can repeat a lie often enough to make it true.
