Just because there is a bunch of Freshman players on the roster doesn't mean any are capable of contributing. How can you say just because there are 7 RFr and Soph's returning that next years defense is "going to be the one of the best we have seen"? Do you have some inside information? Five years ago Justin Frick contributed right away as a Freshman. Apparently none of these young guys were good enough this year for Bohl to bolster D-line depth.
BTW, The only recruit I am really excited about so far this year is the linebacker from Wisconsin. Hopefully there is more to come. Need some very good D lineman, a stand out QB and a great punter to maintain and improve on last years team. Last years D-line was below average and so what if a few return from that group. The QB was outstanding and the punter too, but we lost both of them to graduation. That is a fact.
This is a GREAT recruiting class. Reid was listed as one of the top 4 linebackers in the state of Wisconsin. Offerman and Bourne McFarland are listed on the Star Trib as the best at their positions and McFarland was listed as the 2nd best wideout in the state. Preston Evans was the most sought after recruit in South Dakota. So we're certainly off to a good start. Horner is great too.
I don't know enough about the ther guys but I would image they are solid.

I would ALMOST agree with that statement if it were 30 years ago when Iowa has 120 schollies. Back then teams would offer a scholly just so another team didnt get him even though they didnt think he was a good fit.
Now with the limit at 85 they really have to be more selective. The walk on rules have changes as well. If they choose not to offer a player who was high on there list there is no reason for SU to think he is damaged goods. There are only so many slots available every year in the big time. Those that dont get the call are still pretty damn good players. PL

Good post. No wonder why we are competitve. They only have 22 more scholorships which is depth.

Its another reason you see more upsets this past year. Its also called PAIRITY. Instead of having a bunch of guys riding the pine they are playing for other schools and contributing.
This really isnt a big surprise. Those good players had to go somewhere when they cut the schollies.
And you are correct that one of the BIG differences is depth. The other is the big schools are going to get there pick of recruits.
But with strength and conditioning coaches now at the smaller schools the gap is closing in the developement of the talent.
But one has to be realistic when it comes to recruits. If a recruit is worth his salt and hes looking at playing for a major school in front of 70-100,000 fans or going to Fargo and playing in front of 18,000 plus where do you think he is going to lean?
This isnt a cut on NDSU its just reality. PL

Yes, Reid is the Linebacker from Wisconsin I was talking about. I forgot about McFarland. He is another guy that could contribute immediately (assuming Mertens is capable of completing passes). I don't remember hearing much about Offerman. Is he a D/O-lineman? Also sounds like Preston Evans should be another great Linebacker. Seems like NDSU has plenty of excellent Linebackers. Wish the D-line was that deep! Anyone hear about taller quality QB's that NDSU is recruiting? Any possible FBS transfers?

Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
I know it is early in the recruiting wars but it does appear that UND is having pretty good success going up against NDSU. That is a very good sign.
----------------------------------------------------------------
I just found that quote on Suesports.org/com/net/whatever. Are they serious? Have they looked at the talent that has verballed to us? Is there a kid in the area that has an offer from NDSU and taken UND? NOPE. That is the answer...and it is accurate. We do recruit some of the same kids, but that doesn't mean they get an offer. Again, like I continually say, they will get some kids that don't want to compete with our depth chart, and want playing time. Do you think they go 6/7 deep at tailback? Hello. We are impressive right now, and only getting deeper. The gap is widening.

just to get the facts right i'm going there for a rb. they were recruiting me as a db because i went to one of their camps in the summer. they havent seen me play that much except when they came to watch austin richards. bohl told me that i was the most explosive player on the field. as my senior year went on they realized that i was more comfortable at the rb position so thats what im going to ndsu for. they also will use me as a returner and a gunner on special teams. so thats all i can say at this point. also they thought that they needed me because of my talent or they wouldnt have even recruited a rb this year.
--------------------------------
I just found that post on ND Preps...sounds like Horner himself. Pretty interesting. I am excited for him. I love kids that see a challenge and want to attack it. Good Luck, I hope you end up with some titles and a great education.

Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
I don't know if this has been posted anywhere, but it looks like we have offered Will Jackson a 6'1" 230lb Linebacker/Running Back from Eastview

Tony, what are your overall thoughts regarding the NDSU recruits (committed and commits to be) so far? Thanks in advance.

Go to the first page of the other recruiting thread. The verbals are there.

Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
we are coming up on signing day....anyone with some info? Looks like a really solid defensive class so far, I guess I was hoping to have some "insider" info on a Quarterback. I love getting Horner at RB and return man, I love the DL/LB crew....we have to be the deepest at 1AA...and I love the WR, he will be great.
-
Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
how many verbals do we have at this point and how many schollies do we have to offer? anyone got that info?

NDSU has nine verbals that we know of and five reported offers. Nobody knows how many schollies there are to give - it's less than usual for two reasons: one, NDSU ramped up so fast to 63 that most of those students are still in school and, two, the fellas have been doing a great job of keeping their grades up (everybody is still eligible). I'm guessing NDSU will sign around 15 guys.
There has been some confusion about where to get this list of verbals. There are two "pinned" threads at the top of the football topic. This one, which is just tracking players NDSU is interested in, and the "2008 Recruits" thread that tracks reported verbals. In both threads the first post contains a master list summarizing all we know.
Here's the link to the "2008 Recruits" thread: http://www.bisonville.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10168
Time will bear this out but I think this will be a small but phenomenal recruiting class.
-
Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
I realized that I didn't explain why I thought this year's class was going to be phenomenal. Mainly, I really like the guys that have verballed already and we still haven't heard from Illinois and Texas. On the other hand, NDSU really needs a QB and DB (or two).
I just peeked at the Illinois prep sight (edgytim.com) and there is an OLB on the front page (Spencer Merritt) with a freaking amazing highlight tape. He blocked punts, tackled runningbacks in the backfield, chased down QBs, went sideline to sideline, decleated receivers, and blew through blockers on a kick return before plowing over the return guy. And he doesn't have any offers! I think he'd make a great safety for NDSU (not that I think NDSU will go after him because it's not in our usual area), but it just makes me think that NDSU is going to find some gems in Texas and Illinois to complement the great core the Bison have already put together.
-
Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
I thought I had heard the coaches had 12 scholarships to work with. I'm guessing it most be somewhat accurate if they have 9 verbals and 5 offers. Not everyone they offered received a full scholarship.
-
Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
Do we really need anymore LB's? That has got to be our deepest position. Why not offer a DB or linemen of some sort?
Also, will Hakeem Bourne McFarlane (sp?) honor his commitment? Does he have any FBS offers? I am suprised U of M hasn't offered him.

Linebackers are the best athletes. You have to remember most high school recruits don't play the same positon they played in high school. I don't think we'll know until signing day but we always seem to get recruits out of Texas and Illinois. Nothing is in stone until signing day but it's rare for someone to change their mind. I think we tend to forget that most of these guys are students first and to turn down a free education is a big deal.

It's actually really not that rare once you get to FCS and FBS. It may be really rare in d-2, but it happens all the time with the big boys.
Also, there are obviously several pros in recruiting linebackers. Generally the Bison can use them at either DE or Safety as well such as a player like the LB out of Wisconsin.

McFarlane simply doesn't have speed. he's big and catch, but he would struggle as a receiver in the Big ten. That and the fact the Gophers already have 4 receivers who have committed.
-
Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
Yep, but the Gophers missed out on the one WR that would have made a HUGE difference in the program. Michael Floyd. Two TD's in the ARMY game yesterday. Very impressive.
We all know that Nobohl is a Gopher rube, but he is correct. McFarlane isn't a burner, but he was a HUGE recruit for us. We aren't Big Ten...we don't need a world class sprinter to be a total stud at our level.

will jackson to Northern Iowa. POOP!
Im surprised NDSU hasn't gotten any recent verbals, very surprised since BOHL was in Texas, Chicago, Wisconsin and Minneapolis lately.
WIth Reggie gone, thought there might be a player or 2 from houston that would verbal sooner rather than signing day.

We may be on the verge of losing another great recuit from the Apple Valley area as Apple Valley Kicker/Punter Jason Obarski is taking an official visit to UND this weekend and Eastview Tight End Dan Edum committed last weekend to UND turning down a scholarship offer from the University of Ohio, all of this according to minnesotapreps.com

Re: 2008 Recruits
Hmmm. I think NDSU is sitting pretty good in the Kicker and TE department. I just watched the last Craig Bohl show and he said CB and defense will be the focus. I would think a QB is in order as well.
-
Re: 2008 Recruits
I watched 2 eastview games, will jackson was a star.. so that sucked
The Tight End was non-existant, NDSU didnt offer him. so no worries.
Kicker/punter from AV?? no clue about him.

Who offers kickers anyway?? Let 'em walk on, they're kickers for crying out loud.

Re: 2008 Recruits
Doubt the other two kickers are, but I was thinking Bibeau was on scholarship. Might be hard to justify two kickers on scholarship at same time.

Re: 2008 Recruits
look at MN they have like 3-4 kicker on schollies.
