All of the G5 conferences have flaws. Other than CUSA (horrible). Think any given year the G5's have a legit hope that their conference can get the autobid.
I'm saying NDSU won't be getting into the AAC. And even if they did, good luck running the table in the league and out of conference as well, which is what it would take to get a sniff.

It's almost a lock that the AAC will be THE conference that gets that "G5 autobid" ... history of NY6 bowl slot for the past decade shows this. It's been the AAC almost every year (UCF, Cincinnati, Houston, Tulane have made it). Being ranked top 10 isn't new for AAC, they've had that happen multiple times, including with Cincinnati at #4. That is the standard the other G5 teams/conferences will have to beat to make it. Boise (MWC) made it the first year in 2014. Boise was ranked #20, which wouldn't have been nearly good enough to make it in recent years.
The other two conferences that have a shot now are MWC or SBC (once or twice in 10 years). SBC had the next two G5 teams after Tulane in CFP rankings this year. MAC is a long shot, but could get in with a small miracle. CUSA will get there when hell freezes over, its that bad now.
Well three of those teams are no longer in the AAC. All that's left is Tulane and they aren't exactly a consistently good team.
I dont see any reason why the MWC, SBC, and MAC wouldn't feel good about their chances if they got a couple decent teams.
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Some crazy outsider interloper comes around here and keeps saying to get FBS in the upper Midwest it'll have to be be self-built as a "Western MAC" type group.
The vessel to make that happen is the Summit League (plus MVFC plus NCHC).

I’m sorry, but why on earth wouldn’t that be the goal every year and what about our program makes you feel skeptical we couldn’t accomplish that in the MW at least 1 time?

Take out San Diego State and maybe Boise State. How good is the MWC then?
Sure it can be a "goal." All sorts of bullshit talk happens in sports. Then there's reality.
Go FBS I'm all for it. But the small % chance of actually making the playoff isn't the selling point.

This is not accurate. To get the "automatic bid" to the playoff you have to be the champion of the highest rated G5 conference.
You don't have to be undefeated. You don't even have to be the highest rated member of your conference..In the MW, you just have to win the Conference Championship game and you are in..As long as the MW is the highest rated G5 overall.
While much tougher, it is possible for a G5 school to get an "At Large Bid" with a gaudy season in a lower rated conference.

My cards are on the table. I think it would be a good and reasonable (not “bullshit”) goal if we were in the MW and if THE REAL SDSU and Boise St were gone…
For me, that’s a selling point. But that’s just me.
If we joined the MW, what’s your goal? What’s your selling point to move up?

Daddy
it doesn't matter your OOC record or any record.
you can be 7-4 but if you WIN your G5 conference and that G5 Conference is the HIGHEST RANKED G5 CONFERENCE
then you IN THE CFP
why is this so hard for you or anyone to understand
it's an incredible opportunity 10000 times bigger than a FVS TITLE

I think you're mis-interpreting the term "highest rated conference champions". It's not the champions of the 6 highest rated conferences that get automatic bids into the 12 team playoffs it's the 6 highest rated individual conference champions. So if the MWC is rated as the 6th best conference as a whole their champion doesn't get into the 12 team CFP unless that champion is one of the 6 highest rated individual conference champions. Given how the Pac-12 might end up shaping up it could be two of the current G5 conference champions making the CFP from time to time.
But moreover to this general argument I'd agree that NDSU can't really worry about CFP prospects of an individual conference because that's very fluid. 10 years ago the Sun Belt looked like they would never sniff having the highest rated G5 conference champ and now they're one of the leading candidates I'd say. Similarly 10 years ago Tulane was in CUSA but worked their way up the conference pecking order. NDSU should strive to do the same if they move FBS.

Well… I’d say its highly unlikely that any G5 conference would be the highest rated if it’s second place team is 6-4 heading into the championship game. But yeah you could have a loss or 2 maybe… more than likely you’d have 2 teams with 1 loss combined heading in…
