well , to sit here for 8 years KNOWING NDSU should be in the FBS by now, then watching all of these FBS G5's scramble for teams and NDSU isn't even fucking mentioned??
that only means 1 thing. our AD is just happy he isn't at Stony Brook and President has been retiring since 2016

ML on 1660 (cliff notes)
Valley/Summit stable and improving, and that’s a good thing
Top of FCS leaving for FBS is VERY concerning and NDSU is watching VERY closely
NDSU can’t talk about current/ongoing external conversations regarding FBS move
My thoughts
Here’s the thing about CUSA – They need at least 8 full-sports members, and after that they can consider FB-only, so NDSU has the luxury of waiting to see what they become before considering this option. If schools like MSU (Bears) and SIU opt to leave MVC for CUSA, you then suddenly have a viable FB-only regional FBS option for NDSU.
Personally, I’d be fine with replacing the UND FB "rivalry" with the Mo State Bears. The game Saturday was much more electric and intense, and had all the chemistry one would want for a new rivalry game, but that's just my opinion. I guess we'll see what happens.

To me that's encouraging. Saying he can't talk about it makes it seem like there at least are external conversations.

So you're saying ML IS a part of those conversations... ;)
Makes sense. Don't love the "watching closely" language. Seems passive, but I'm also nitpicking now. Just hope whatever happens is best for the University and leave it up to him and DB at this point.
I don't love Missouri State as a football rival. Great game on Saturday, but every game between then and 2010 has been a shit show. I remember going to the game in Springfield 3 or 4 years ago and there were more Bison fans than Bear fans. We scored four touchdowns before MSU had gotten a first down. Not a good program and will be bad once Petrino leaves.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Yeah, I guess I was wrong. Point taken with a smile
You have consider who the Bears would replace :) When I became a Bison fan, UND was D2 and the universe seemed normal and properly organized. For NDSU to go FBS, we need to rethink the "regional" rivalry thing. I guess that’s my point. Jacks would be great too, of course, but who’s to say they would be even interested. For that matter, who is to say MSU is, but they are being mentioned now (and I think they are unhappy with the direction the MVC is going?)
Heck, I'd be on board with a SHU conference rivalry. IMO the most important thing is timezone and Bison FB already has a significant presence in TX.

In other words, they haven't reached out to anyone, or even given FBS any serious consideration.
NDSU is way behind the mark on this one and is going to be left out of the party when this round of realignment is over with.

Would love Sammy. Their fans try to dish smack now (somehow? Lol) and geographically it’s close to me so that works.

This was my take on the ML comments as well. And of course 1660 didn’t push him at all.

That said, 90s was more sarastic because of how awful things had become with DII's decline. The FCS is on the same path...Big Sky/MVFC will be like the NCC/MIAA and they will regionalize us into matchups in the playoffs. It will be like old times, wouldn't shock me if scholarship reduction talk heats up as well.

Already get regionally paired. FCS is a joke and will kill NDSU football and all the success it has had.
Sad to see, but I guess my falls will be more open because I'm almost done now, just not interested in this division anymore.

Does SIU or MSU have high enough attendance to even think of joining FBS? Both were at ~6500 in 2019. I fell like they value being in the MVC WAY more than bringing their marginal FB programs to the FBS by moving all sports to the CUSA. Any MVC school is a stretch to leave that conference. Jacksonville St and Sam Houston are closer and better options for the CUSA

NMSU averages 14-17k in attendance and that wasn’t good enough for a MWC invite. Are they closer to the MWC schools than NDSU is? It’s of note that NMSU got voted out of the Sunbelt because they were football only, not close to any of the member schools and had not rivalries. How do we know the CUSA would take NDSU if they found closer schools to replace NDSU. Would NDSU being a sitting time bomb in these southern conferences? Is it worth the risk?

Are people really true fans if they won’t support the team at the FCS level anymore because they are bored? Seriously some people are being a bunch of wet blankets. Been a fan long before the championship run and will be forever no matter what happens.

Fanhood isn't binary. You're not just either FULL FAN ALL THE TIME ALL GAMES NO MATTER WHAT or not a fan at all. i.e. I'm a fan of the basketball team, baseball team, w soccer, etc. I don't watch every game because not every game interests me and life stuff comes up. "You're not a true fan because you don't 'love' the team as much as I do" thinking never made much sense to me.
FWIW, as people on bisonville we are the rubest of them all. If people in Bisonville are talking about losing interest, imagine what the other 29,500 think. That's ultimately the problem

Someone smarter than me link the Braveheart One Chance speech.
Yeah, we could stay in FCS for the next 50 years, win 45 championships as all our competition moves up and on to better things. But at the end of those 50 years, what wouldn't we give to come back to this point in time and take a shot at FBS and see what this university, fan base and athletic department can really do?
I know where I sit

Re: A new and better FBS thread
The hard-core NDSU football fanbase is 35-50. there is no denying this.
Majority of season ticket holders are probably 50+
that 35-50 crowd has enjoyed the ride In the prime of their lives, traveled to all FBS games, Most of the Frisco games, they've done it all already.
NDSU HAS TO APPEASE THAT GENRE.....
Maybe Matt Larson doesn't care, if the program goes south he will bolt to the 1st east coast AD job & coast at 150-200k/year.
Bresciani has been great, but he's gone too now!!
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
MSU and SIU might be BB schools, but they have higher FB ambitions. Let’s see where this goes. Assuming they survive, people will rail on CUSA as the bottom-of-the barrel G5, but this is what the Sunbelt was not that long ago, and now look what they’ve become through the strategic addition of high-level FCS schools. The MSU board seems up about it, and it looks like they are actively trying to boost FB attendance.
It’s also possible that the NCAA might change the landscape for FB-only in the near future. Have to wait and see what they come up with.

Me too, and it is not in the FargoDome... it's at home or at the lake place watching until the playoffs. Playoffs are about the only thing that is keeping me from getting rid of our 7 season tickets. Next year is slightly better with SDSU and UND home games.
NDSU football (and other NDSU sports too) are awesome, but the FCS as a whole is not.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
angry phone calls into 1660am is EXACTLY WHAT WE NEED. good job guys!! keep the pressure.
Matt Larson shit or get off the pot & head back to stony brook if you want an easy job
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
If we were to be a football-only member in an FBS conference, there wouldn't need to be any additional sports offered by NDSU, would there? I think there is a minimum for D-1 and then conferences can set a higher bar for the minimum number of sports sponsored at their schools.

2019 was before Bobby Petrino was named head football coach. Things have changed.
Bobby and the de facto coach in waiting Nick P want to move up so the school president and athletic director want it too now. Springfield businesses want it but there is pushback from faculty and the Board of Governors. If Conference USA asks nicely then we will probably go and try and take some MVC schools with us so that we aren't the only bad guy.
I would love to see NDSU and SDSU join us. Maybe even the Yotes and the Fighting Hawks too. The Indiana State beat guy wrote a column today about how Missouri State should stay. He probably knows that he could soon be the beat reporter for a team in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Evansville and Northern Iowa are in similar situations.

This hits on topic I was thinking. That no matter what conference NDSU would join they would be a geographical outlier. I think it may be hard to get a conference to want a single team on the outskirts of their range that doesnt increase TV revenue or recruiting footprint in a meaningful way. Before all this realignment what conference has a team that doesnt have at least another conference member in state or in a neighbor state (excluding Hawaii) ...... Buffalo (still within 5 hr of drive of multiple teams) and 2 Big12 teams (ISU, WVU)... thats it
Leaving the best option for NDSU move up to have a partner or two. Preferably one geographically closer to NDSU. This would also help NDSU maintain some rivalry with a team nearby. Only see a couple teams that could fit that bill, SDSU and Montana and to a lesser extent UND or Montana State.
I think ideally the PAC12 poaches Boise and San Diego State.. The MWC tell Hawaii to go pound sand and they add NDSU, and two of Montana, SDSU, Montana State

since ndsu is an outlier, before any offer would come from the MWC, i'm sure that they would want to see some FBS success. After all, the MWC can always go to texas and find teams that already have proven that they can hang in the FBS. If however, NDSU were to be an established FBS program and could raise the profile of the conference in terms of on-field production that might sway them. There is no way they would take FCS NDSU.

Who are they plucking from Texas at this point??? UTEP is all thats left with the aggressive moves by B12 and AAC to basically gut CUSA of all Texas schools
Even if you replace MWC with CUSA in this discussion doesnt take away the need for NDSU to have a partner in the move up

NDSU doesnt NEED a partner in this NOR should they WANT a partner because when NDSU is FBS in Football, they can pluck the top 3-4 recruits from all these regional teams, hell with the transfer portal, sdsu, uni, und , usd can be our minor league team and grab their kids as they progress!!
Time to go Scorched Earth on this NDSU to FBS push!!! lets goooo!!
