Many schools survived without the payouts for years before they started being tomato cans for the big boys. They will just have to change their funding model.

and/or come down on the scholarship count somewhat and merge with the top of the FCS at a sustainable number for more members of the non-contract leagues while the bottom of the FCS does the same with D-II.

In the long run, I don't think there will be 3 divisions in "Division 1". I think the P5 breaks away and then there will be the rest - similar to how it was 10-15 years ago before a bunch of FCS teams moved up. I don't see it happening soon and definitely don't see NDSU moving up before that's figured out.

I think that the Pioneer keeps proving over and over to be sustainable and win you have to have some semblance of scholarship athletes. Why else do the first 2 teams eligible for an autobid get found to have irregularlities in funding for athletes. IMO to compete at this level of football you need to have a certain minimum scholarships. While I don't know where this leaves the IVY because they don't participate in the postseason, I believe there is some desire in some of the schools to participate in it.
