There is a big blank space in the north central part of the country on this map of FBS teams shown at https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/com...ootball_teams/

This is the best chance for a football only invite since the Sunbelt allowed football only members. I would wholly disagree that the FCS is a sinking ship compared to the CUSA. The CUSA is on the verge of falling apart with some of its members with no where to go. We cant jump on that sinking ship unless we know it is going to float after we make that jump!

Yep. Now the problem they have is having a stable conference of the Olympic Sports. You can't have football only without them.
Here's a bat shit crazy idea. Summit League West (current Summit) Summit League East (remainder of CUSA) with a little shifting around
You need 6 in each half for a conference championship game

That's one of the things I love about living where I do (not far from you). I grew up in Minot and when I tell people how far away it is I explain Minneapolis is about halfway. And Minneapolis is far. We are also closer to Orlando than Minot.

There is an amazing new invention called aviation. If you fly, you can pretty much go anywhere in the US pretty easily and quickly.

But not inexpensive. But this is already true for much of the MVFC. Having all 4 Dakota schools and potentially St. Thomas will help. Not sure if the teams bus to UNI.

When I lived in the Florida Panhandle, I was only an hour further from Chicago than Fargo is lol.
We are in the middle of nowhere and that's very okay with me

Re: A new and better FBS thread
The whole having to travel to Fargo argument is so dumb. Ok picture this, a team has to play NDSU every year for ten years. Guess what, that team will have to travel to Fargo five times. 5 fucking times! 5! They can pay a head coach a million dollars plus every year but having to fly a team to Fargo five times over a 10 year span is totally unacceptable. Also some compare us to Hawaii. How in all that is holy a comparable scenario?

Yeah but I can get to Fargo and back on $90. That allegiant flight round trip from Nashville is attractive but then I'd have to drive to Nashville, pay for parking, and if I want to actually bring something with me, there's an extra $60.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
So OK, maybe I was wrong about JMU. If the rumors are true, kudos to them. One would assume that SHU, UCA, etc. will become very attractive to CUSA at this point.
Regarding NDSU footprint, you can view that as either a strength (recruiting) or a weakness (travel). We’re talking FB only here people, and if we can establish a rivalry with JMU we can make one with lots of other teams.
If you want the 4 Dakota schools tied at the hip (barf), then you are firmly planted in FCS forever land, and there’s no way you’ll ever be coaxed out of that box. There’s no logic to all 4 FBS. None whatsoever.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I’d be ok with one (SDSU) but that’s about it. Fuck UND and USD isn’t important enough to even be a thought in my mind. I love to go at alone and get in as a Football only member.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Yep, people starting to report that JMU is going to the Sun Belt.
BuT WhERE WeRe aLL tHe LiNkS?!? I thought you couldn’t move up without reporters mentioning your name in articles for at least 2 years. Someone refresh me on the rules

Let's share in the mediocrity. Let's both move up to CUSA.

I was hoping this would all trickle down and force something to happen for NDSU. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like it's going to.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
If schools like Sam Houston and McNeese are going to move up the entire MVFC might as well move up. All it would take is to move the MVFC under the MVC umbrella and have all the Summit League football schools + YSU become affiliate members. Apparently there is a rule that if a conference sponsored 1A/FBS football at one time they can do so again without needing some kind of NCAA waiver to establish a new FBS conference. Since the MVC sponsored 1A football from 1978-1985 they would fall under this rule.

Pay more for the same product? Why would I want to do that?

The OOC options would be much better...which is one of the primary things I see being bitched about on BV. I don't think that a risen MVFC would be a step down from the Sun Belt or MAC or maybe even the MWC, with the exception of a couple of schools.

Man I don't know. Bemidji state, minot state and Jamestown for non con and then usd, und, and sdsu for conference play sounds pretty exciting to me!!! Pump it up. It's good for the state!
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Yeah that’s BS. Maybe for WIU, UND, YSU etc but NDSU would be in the exact same boat, literally, and then we'd have to share CFB $$ with them

Who would be willing to do it? NDSU, SDSU, UNI, ILLINOIS STATE, SOUTHERN ILLINOIS, YOUNGSTOWN, MO STATE, ST THOMAS?

I mean if schools like Sam Houston, McNeese, and UCA are "moving up" to the bottom tier of the FBS then the bar for financial commitment is really being lowered. Those schools aren't going to have a $40M athletic budget anytime soon. They're not going to be paying their head coaches $1M+ annually. Hell, I'd doubt they'd even get near 85 football schollies unless they find a money fountain somewhere. I guess schools like WIU and Indiana St might have to make a tough decision but most existing MVFC schools probably wouldn't have to up their funding much at all to be competitive.

Those schools hardly have a $40M endowment. Gonna take 50 years of inflation for their athletic budget to be $40M

This, 100%. Regardless of impacts to volleyball.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I hate to quote Aaron Rodgers but R-E-L-A-X. As of now, the only FCS move up imminent is JMU. That sucks but there's been zero moves within the MVFC or Big Sky for that matter, those are NDSU's geographic FCS peers and those are the ones that would really grind my gears if NDSU got beat to the punch by in regard to being proactive about an FBS move. You can shout into the wind about Tarleton being included in a tweet about possible CUSA move-ups but it's more likely they are the beneficiary of being in the right geographic footprint (CUSA wants to replace the Texas teams they lost to the AAC) as it is that they have a some kind of super persuasive AD working his magic or banging on the door of the CUSA commish's door.
I'll await my tarring and feathering now.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Sorry it sucked when GSU and App left. JMU is something else, they are the canary in coal mine that is screaming it is time to do something.
The Montana schools have no ambition and the MVFC schools worship at the alter of basketball. Those are not programs I think should be guiding our football thinking, not unless you yearn for the glory days of 90s NDSU football.

The mentality that we need to run headfirst into FBS at the potential expense of the rest of the programs in the department is straight out of the playbook of UND hockey fans.
This is not a decision to be made emotionally... like Gene Taylor said when he wrote the letter recommending the move to D1 "You better be right or it's going to be a real short career for you". Going Indy in FBS football is a recipe for disaster... and if it's for all sports it risks imploding the entire athletic department for the sake of the vanity of the football program.

It has been the complete opposite of a disater for Liberty. That said, I am not sure we even have to do that. The CUSA may be at a point where we could ask for a football only offer and they may grant it. This may be the type of move we have to make to position ourselves in the FBS long term. Just like the Great West in the FCS, you aren't going to start out in the best G5 league like the MWC.

Yeah my post was tongue in cheek after it sounded like Matt Larsens first priority was the volleyball team. The sources I’ve read on Twitter say that Tarleton State had a meeting with CUSA officials. That is an infinite steps ahead of what it sounds like NDSU has had.
What a joke
