Sounds like the Sun Belt has stolen Southern Miss from C-USA and Marshall is expected to follow.
C-USA on life support

Re: A new and better FBS thread
The Sun Belt has made some serious moves and has earned respect. Guess that just goes to show you... take the chance when you can get it.

I wonder if the leftover independents and any unclaimed FBS wanna-be's (including us) could simply buy the CUSA name and build it up from scratch. CUSA is such a storied brand (granted, from way back when). It is a shame that the CUSA is probably going to go away for good.

Add in USD and UND and you've got a 6-team north division. You know if NDSU moves up, UND will follow (again).

Re: A new and better FBS thread
For all you bitches whining about geography
NDSU flies to Youngstown Oh or Springfield Missouri for 2 hours. NDSU to Denver is 2 hours. SAME!
So MWC flies 1 hour longer 1 time every 2 years to Fargo. big freakin deal!
NDSU could do 2 Neutral site games in Minneapolis a year , we've already done that and it would help a conf. San Diego St to Colorado State 2 hr 10 min
San Diego St to Fargo 3 hr 23 min
BIG DEAL!

Not only that, but Thamel is saying JMU and ODU as well.

CUSA will be left with UTEP, WKU, La Tech, MTSU, and FIU. Lots of speculation that Mo State would move up and NMSU would leave independence. If Mo State goes FBS before NDSU....oh Lordy.

If CUSA is willing to take NMSU, then they should also take NDSU. At that point, distances don't matter. If you're going to have to travel long distances, at least have some football success in the mix as well. Btw...I'd love to be in a conference with NMSU for basketball.

Conference USA is such a train wreck nowadays. I guess I would feel compelled to gloat if we moved up before NDSU. But that has to be the most mediocre prize to win in all the world. CUSA is one step away from hosting their football championship at some high school in Texas. And not even a cool one like Allen.

Speaking of train wrecks, CUSA doesn’t have Missouri State, Indiana State and Western Illinois, so it’s automatically a major step up.
At least if MSU moves up before NDSU that conference will know they have the best teacher’s college in a 200 mile radius. That’s gotta count for something

Except that NMSU is only 40 miles from Conference USA member UTEP. This might be the best chance for a move up with SDSU, Mo State, and Illinois State. It would also be a better basketball conference as well with NMSU, WKU, SDSU, NDSU, Mo State, and Illinois State to anchor it. I would also imagine that TX State could be in play as well since they are on an Island now in CUSA. The following new Conference USA would be a great start for the MVFC schools that have dreamed of moving up.
NDSU
SDSU
Mo State
TX State
NMSU
UTEP
WKU
MTU
La Tech
FIU
Illinois State
?

The MidCon was a train wreck as well until NDSU and SDSU stabilized it and made it our own.

The MAC should be all over WKU and MTSU. Nobody has poached any MAC schools, but this is an arms race at this point and you have to strike while you can.

Yeah...I keep forgetting about UTEP.

Naw, those idiots up north would poo poo the idea for five years before they'd follow in our tracks. When has UN_ ever done anything at the right time? Besides, the Tin Shed is way too small and more importantly, teh hockies would feel threatened.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
No point in staying. Fcs tanked hard when we lost app gsu etc. we lose more of the top tier and it’s going to be so much worse.

We are the top tier man, look around.

CUSA officially on life support

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Chris Vannini's latest article (IMO, he's had the most insightful pieces on realignment) https://theathletic.com/2902904/2021...n-may-be-next/
Mentions JMU a few times, but again, no NDSU talk.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
So we are still FCS? Well that sucks.

Having someone local to jump with NDSU to the FBS would make the move much easier and likely to happen. Question is who will want to make the leap? Propose to the Conference USA a north division composed of 7 teams NDSU, SDSU, USD, UND, UNI, S Ill, and Mo St. Now could be the chance to jump but I don’t think NdSU administration wants to do it alone.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I like the north division idea but, selfishly, I don't want to bring UND along for the ride.

Outside of NDSU how many of those school could feasibly move up to FBS? 2?
Also I get the idea/need to have a regional partner but it doens't excite me to just take the core of our existing conference and move up with them. Also it would seem that moving up with that many regionals would tie NDSU to that conference for a very long time.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I’m pretty sure NDSU has missed the boat. There are still going to be things happening realignment wise but I don’t believe NDSU will be a part of it sadly.

At the end of the day, it would be like now with better OOC games and no playoff. What kind of negotiating power would that group get with a nearly dead C-USA though?
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Is staying in a gutted FCS the best thing for NDSU football? That is a question we need to start asking ourselves here, regional schools are one thing but we could be latching ourselves onto anchors like back in the DII era all over again. Which in the long run is going to do serious damage to our football program.

Depends how dead it is....If the MAC starts picking at the carcass we could have carte blanche but that wouldn't matter if we don't have other schools that have similar interests.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
My concern with Conference USA is they may not get out of this alive. Need to see them stabilize or see a plan that appears to be stable first.
Financially their TV contract is crap so all the money would have to be made in FBS games
I could see C-USA ultimately end up like the Summit. If you remember the Summit originally had teams in Louisiana, Michigan, Utah, and Indiana. Now it's basically the NCC 2.0
If NDSU and SDSU would jump, naturally trama like Montana, UNI, and any team in that geography could end up in the conference
But wouldn't it be interesting to have James Madison as a conference opponent in football only?
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
CUSA is a sinking ship... I'd say the next opportunity for NDSU looking to move FBS would be in a reclassified WAC. Apparently, there's a rule that allows a conference that was previously classified as an FBS/1A conference to reclassify as an FBS conference. It would make sense for the western remnants of CUSA like LA Tech and UTEP to join up (at least in football) with New Mexico St... then they'd have to fill the rest out with FCS move ups. Maybe they'd be able to look at some schools in the current WAC FCS conference like Sam Houston or Stephen F Austin but I'd think it would also make sense for them to look for the better programs in the Big Sky or MVFC who are ready to make the jump as affiliate members to build a stronger and more competitive G5 league. Not sure where that would leave the FCS schools currently in the WAC who have no means to field an FBS program like recent D2 move-ups Tarleton and Dixie but this might be the best scenario for NDSU to find a geographic fit in the FBS with some regional peers.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I never realized how remote Fargo really is until I moved away. I can be in Chicago, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Columbus, Nashville, Detroit, St. Louis, Cincinnati in under six hours. That just blew my mind when I sat down and thought about it. I don't know how big of a deal this is for a football-only invite as those are all chartered anyway.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
If NDSU doesn't get out now, something tells me it is just never going to happen. It is what it is I guess.

Sad thing is, I doubt our leadership has the guts or vision to make the jump. FCS football is dying and they seem blind to it.

I don't know... I think patience is the way to go. If you just jump for the sake of jumping, you may end up in a conference that is on the verge of collapse. The situation has to be right. You need teams to jump with and find a conference with football only because the Summit is such a good fit and has a really good long term prospect
Also the ultimate long term goal would be the Mountain West but it's easier to jump if you start smaller.
Eventually the WAC will convert their FCS Football Conference into an FBS. They are looking at 2030, which isn't as far away as we think. That would be attractive to any FBS only team west of the Mississippi. You can't play teams like Sam Houston in all sports, but football only would be fine. Same with Montana schools.
In a perfect world, the Mountain West loses 3 teams and we get in just based on limited options. But that may take a while. It all depends on Boise, Colorado State, and Air Force. If one of those teams leaves, that may change their POV

I think it'll still happen. It'll just be way too late like the D1-AA jump.
Which will set us back from further growing with (or even outgrowing?) the NCAA landscape.

A CUSA invite would be a lifeboat, not a sinking ship. FCS is a sinking ship. The chance to go FBS may not materialize again. CUSA is a dingy, but it is an FBS dingy that can save us from the FCS-RMS Titanic. I think we need to get out of FCS by any means possible.

Could be the only real shot at a football only invite that many seem to desire, not sure people really grasp at how rare of a thing that is. Most FBS conferences want all-sports or nothing.

Everybody outside of the P5 is on the Titanic... we're all just re-arranging the deck chairs (saw that on Twitter recently).
Whether it's the clinging-to-life CUSA or the fledgling WAC it's going to be an island of misfit toys conference much like the Great West was in the move to FCS.... that's why I think it's important to have a landing spot that can accommodate some regional partners as well like one/both Montana schools and/or SDSU.

If these remaining FBS misfits are facing the prospect of going indy in football they'll make some accommodations I'd suspect to keep their FBS conference afloat. If not, NDSU better get comfortable in the FCS.
