Pretty much exactly what many of us are looking for from NDSU

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Probably a dumb question, but I'm sincere in asking it.
Is there a scenario in which we end up in CUSA? I know the conventional wisdom is with MWC or MAC. But CUSA is quite possibly going to be clobbered through all the realignment. If so, they are going to need schools and may need to abandon regional thinking. Most importantly, we may still be in need of an FBS conference when the dust starts settling. Could NDSU go there, dominate immediately, and help resurrect the CUSA brand?

Might happen, I've also seen people talk about rumblings of the G5 conferences wanting to realign everything based on geography since there's so much overlap going on through the Sun Belt, CUSA, AAC footprints. Probably doesn't help NDSU since we don't fit nicely into any of the potential groupings, but I suppose you could make the argument that NDSU could slide into a Texas-based conference.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
CUSA is defintely a spot for NDSU football Only... AAC hopefully as well, but i dont see that.
MWC= most sense , peer land grants, rivalries on day 1, geographic
CUSA= they would need a football only 1 off, NDSU would fit that bill
MAC= could work, but MAC wants no part of NDSU football
AAC = football only perhaps
Big 12 = promise of new stadium and all sports!

Ohio state doesn’t want us anywhere near the B1G because they know we’d take their easy path to the “playoff” away.

It was a 10 second mention with Montana and Montana St actually being the lead in and the "poo pooing" you speak of was one of the buys saying "Do the Montana's actually want to move up?"

Doesnt surprise me. Although things can change, the Mountain West is a stable situation as of now. The allure of the AAC isnt what it was.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
One way or another NDSU needs to get football to the FBS. With the MWC sounding like it's a no go for now, it makes sense to look to C-USA or the Sunbelt once the dust settles. Whoever needs teams should be where we focus.

100% agree. And if they all tell us no, like they did Liberty, we need to ask the NCAA to permit us to become FBS football independent. Liberty will get picked up by someone in this round because they now have a track record in FBS. Despite our advantages, we are down the priority list because we are FCS and no one wants FCS call-ups. We need to be FBS when this is all said and done.

I think the majority of Bison fans would prefer to be FBS but this is where there's a lot of disagreement. I think going FBS independent would be a catastrophic mistake. I don't think the admin should be in the FBS at all costs boat. They can be proactive about seeking FBS opportunities while still being selective. There needs to be a balance struck or they risk toppling everything that has been built over the last 50+ years.

I agree that this statement should have ended with, ... unless they get an invite from the Big12.

I honestly don't see the downside to independence, relative to staying in FCS. We aren't disrupting much by leaving the FB-only MVFC. We'd get to play FBS teams. And we can still fill in our schedule with high value FCS teams like SDSU or UND. What's more, nothing is impacted in our Summit League membership. So we're only talking football and an opportunity to prove that we can play successfully at that level. I think it would resurrect a ton of fan interest. I think the Fargodome sells out every game for a couple of years, regardless of which G5 team we are playing. And the fan travel to the one or two P5 games every year would be phenomenal. I mean, I really believe this.

It would be extremely difficult to get homes games. At least any decent opponent that would drive attendance and be better than a mediocre FCS team.

I don't want anything to do with independent. I would rather join a crappier league like Conference USA before going that route. Even if we are independent, there is no guarantee we get a bunch of non conference games. Certainly we would get larger payouts and could do home and homes with other G5 schools.
It's all going down eventually.
The AAC needs to replace UCF, Houston, Cincinnati and possibly Memphis. If they can't get Air Force, Colorado State, or Boise, their options are much more limited and they will need a minimum of 3 or 4 teams. They could raid Conference USA and get Southern Miss, Rice, North Texas, UTEP, or Marshall. Or they could raid the Sunbelt for a few teams like Appalachian State or Arkansas State. If they poach 4 Conference USA teams than C-USA will need to fill 4 spots. Or maybe the they poach 2 from the Sunbelt and 2 from C-USA USA. Then it will be a fight between the Sunbelt and C-USA. One could argue, the Sunbelt has a better TV deal now so what if C-USA is down 4 teams? Or what if C-USA loses 4 and then the Sunbelt steals 2 more? Then they need 6. At that point, we would be a target just based on the lack of teams.
Then what happens when Boise and Colorado State announce they are leaving a year from now? Or what if the PAC 12 target San Diego State or Colorado State? Or what if the Big 12 wants Memphis?
Then you got the WAC who has set a goal of being an FBS Conference

I don't think we could see this any more opposite of each other. Do you think SDSU and UND are going to want to play NDSU as a FBS team? Do you think NDSU is going to be able to pay them the requisite money to do it? Or are you suggesting home/home agreements with those teams in which case NDSU is basically still an FCS team masquerading as an FBS team.
I think the schedule would be full of road games... maybe 5 home games a year out of 12 and I think that's a generous estimate. I just don't think the average fan is going to be that much more exited about New Mexico St than they will be about Missouri St. I'll grant a it'll be more interest but to the point where you're guaranteeing sellouts I just don't see it.
Going independent means no CFP money and very little media rights money. I don't see it being financially sustainable unless you further jack up ticket prices or are able to significantly increase contributions. Is there more juice to be squeezed out of either of those oranges? I'd say maybe when it comes to contributions but no way when it comes to ticket prices.

All good points. But to clarify, independence for me is a last resort. I'd rather be in any FBS conference than an independent. I'm just saying that I believe independence is better than FCS. We don't get playoff money now, so that doesn't change. I think because of our brand and our traveling fan base, if we are eligible, we'd be invited to bowl games and get those payouts. And I think we'd be independent for only a couple of years. If we are FBS, a conference will be much more likely to invite us in.
As far as squeezing juice...I think the FCS orange is nearly squeezed dry as it is. As time goes on, we will look even less attractive to FBS conferences because we won't be able to sustain fan interest in FCS. We NEED to do something.

I actually agree with you there. I referred to independence, relative to FCS. I would absolutely prefer to be in an FBS conference. Any place. For sure.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I doubt the Pac12 gets involved in any of this. They’re stable and they would balk at the thought of a Colorado State or SDSU.

How could the PAC12 pass up on SDSU? They had over 7,000 at their last game

Can you show us where any FBS conference was interested in adding NDSU
the last 10 years?
That would be your litmus test.
Links???
As always, extra extra credit for articles mentioning/quoting Mountain West Conference officials, Mountain West Athletic Directors & staff, Mountain West Football Coaches, Mountain West beat writers etc.
And extra extra extra credit for showing Craig Bohl & Wyoming were interested in adding NDSU to the Mountain West……
I always enjoy reading such NDSU - FBS articles. :)

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Scroll thru this thread there are mentions here or there
but I'll say it for the 150th time just for you.
NDSU ADMIN ARE THE ONES THAT NEED TO BE SELLING/SOLICITING NDSU !!! and they haven't, they have been content to just stay the course....its much easier.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I gave you your easy “litmus test” to pass,
so in other words, for the 150th time just for you,
you ain’t got nothing……sigh
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
So CUSA is going to be presented with a regionalization plan that would rearrange CUSA, AAC and Sun Belt and group teams by region. Apparently CUSA is interested and paid for the research/proposal in hopes of convincing the others but AAC and Sun Belt have already basically said they don't even want to hear it, they're not interested.

The selling and soliciting he's talking about would be at least partially public. You'd have a feasibility study that is made public. You tell the world we'd like to move in this direction. We showcase the practice facility as FBS-quality. Sure, you're making phone calls behind the scenes but you are also trying to raise support for the idea publicly. Get sports fans and sports writers on your side. Prepare the NDSU fan base for what should be the future. We know none of that happened because we are the public, and none of it happened in front of us. Instead, what we did see and hear from NDSU leadership for years has been repeated statements that FCS is where we belong. That this is the sweet spot. That we want to play for national championships. So, there's the proof. Unless we're not supposed to believe our lying eyes and ears.

When NDSU was looking to transition to D1, was their a public feasibility study done? If so, I would expect a similar outcome this time around. The truth is that NDSU has said very little regarding moving to FBS football. A few generic comments that mostly backup what the Professor mentioned.
