Re: Catch all Recruiting thread
Even worse for this staff is they can't even find the good players that are right under their noses. They never even had a meeting with Mikayla Reinke from Kindred (20 miles away) who ended up starting several games for UND as a true freshman, and from what I've been told, never even offered Tylee Irwin (50 miles away) who was great for SDSU this past season. It's time for the whole WBB staff to go.

Amazing.... how is it that we give schollies to foreign players.. Without exhausting options in our own area let alone country. This staff puts zero effort in recruiting, yet they seem to attend AAU functions everywhere... Do they know they're supposed to work and evaluate? Not just run up an expense account...If we can't recruit this team with this staff will be forever doomed. I think perhaps it could be they are just inept at evaluating and identifying good players. Either way sad....

Just noticed this from Brian Shawn (June 27th)
https://www.midcosn.com/blog/2018/06...ayers-offered/
Quote:
Cirkeline Rimdal, a player on the Denmark U-18 team announced on her Facebook page that she has committed to play at NDSU and plans to join the team in the fall. She's a long 6'0" wing that plays in the top club in the country. She's known for her defense, but gives the Bison another athletic body to put on the floor. She is 19 years-old but will be a freshmen when she gets to campus and will be eligible to play right away.

Regarding some local recruiting:
Quote:
the Bison women have offered scholarships to two players in the region. The first is Katie Entzi from Edgeley. Entzi is the daughter of University of Mary Hall of Fame basketball player, Rory Entzi, who is also very well known as a coach and official in North Dakota as well. Katie is a versatile post player that uses both hands well inside and has shown the ability to shoot outside as well. She will be a senior at Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier this comingseason.
http://www.hudl.com/profile/10492188/Katie-Entzi/videos
NDSU has also offered Paige Thompson of nearby Hawley, Minnesota. Thompson is very gifted and versatile for her size. She stands 6'3", but can play any position on the floor, including point guard. She is very comfortable shooting from the perimeter but can go inside if she needs to. Thompson was an all-conference selection as a sophomore and will be a junior this coming season.
That is an early offer for Paige Thompson by NDSU, as she is class of 2020.

Re: Catch all Recruiting thread
Glad to see this thread light up again, I couldn't click on it at first with so much dust build up...
So Autumn Ogden is gone but we replaced her with a Dane...do we have any Americans left on the team? A while back when I said I would like for NDSU to keep an eye out over seas, what I had in mind was perhaps a player or two from Australia. Oh well, as long as they get the job done.

Re: Catch all Recruiting thread
My daughter attended both UND and NDSU basketball camps this past summer.
She was more impressed with UND.
At the NDSU camp there was approximately 50 kids attending. She noted that there was 1 prospect that NDSU was looking at (she later signed with UND). The number of prospects seemed lacking. With football camp for example, that is where NDSU discovers many of their future players. NDSU is not getting the future players at the camps.
UND had 22 campers of which 2 had already committed to UND, 1 more has since signed with UND. a couple of the underclassman at the camps will be eventual prospects. So many 25% of the kids at the UND camps were eventual Sioux.
Signees all played for the Dakota Drillers AAU team
Maren was at the AAU Nike Tournament in Chicago last week. Who she was following I don't know as my daughter plays a lower age bracket then where the coaches are scouting. I did view one Dakota Driller Game and 10-15 coaches, many from mid level P5 conferences were watching. Lauren Ware viewing. I did not see Maren at this time. I don't know who she was following. I did speak to one dad that ran into. His daughter along with 3 others from their aau team attended NDSU camp this past summer, Maren did not speak to him.
So whether our kids are NDSU caliber, maybe, maybe not, but at acknowledge the parent that spent$250 to go the camp.
So in dealing with the local basketball talent around here due my daughters play (high school and AAU), i don't see NDSU out much locally. So don't have a feel for what there focus is. The weekend before Chicago Nike Tournament, Lindsay Whalen was on the court next to us watching 10th grade girls play. That to me is when you find the recruits.

Re: Catch all Recruiting thread
Your not going to get the best local kids until you start winning. It's the same for UND FB. Is what it is, the coaching staff needs to improve the product on the court, if they can't we need to find someone who can.

This has just got to end. Plz plz let this be her last season here. Foreign players taking our scholarships. Are we that desperate? No One will come here until she is gone. I guess that is the state we are in.

I asked a former player of the women's team what other alums think of Walseth. Of the many negatives she brought up she said she had no idea how to spot talent.

Re: Catch all Recruiting thread
I am not hear to stand up for Coach Walseth (clearly she is on the hot seat for her job) but just to make a normal leveled headed comment. This is not directed at any one person or group. But there have been comments about not enough local players on the team and also comments about not recruiting local players for the team. Comments about local players are not "good" enough to play D1 basketball but yet people want local players. Not all players are going to come to NDSU with SDSU (powerhouse), USD (very solid) and UND (pretty good) all in our backyard. Currently 4 players are from ND with all very good high school resumes on the team. Yes there are 4 players from across the pond on the team as well. There was 7 in that recruiting class with 3 leaving the program, I believe I am correct on that number. I am not happy with the current state of WBB at NDSU either. It is my hope that the Jr class lead by Sarah, Rylee, Tyrah and Reilly take big step forward this year with the other talent on the team, setting them up for a great senior year. Dehoff did us no favors and Walseth has not proven herself to be a lot better.

Maybe she should try developing that young local talent instead of starting true freshman.

I would agree with you on the developing young talent. That is the same problem I have with Richman.
Sorry but I knew everything there was to know about playing basketball coming out of HS. I needed no further instruction. EXTREMELY DEEP PURPLE...

You must have inside knowledge to say "Didn't even make a call?" Do have access to all the people who might have called? It just a pretty bold statement.

I know the family.
My daughter also attended NDSU and UND's women's camps this summer. So impression(s).
NDSU 50-55 girls in attendance. Camp led by upper class team members and assistants. Maren presence was at the opening and closing of camp. Not during the drills and games. A month later at the Nike tournament in Chicago, my daughters team (in which five girls on the team attended the camp) did not get an acknowledgement from Maren as she walked by.
Of the young ladies attending the camp it was felt NDSU was recruiting one camper. She has sense signed with UND.
The UND camp had 22 in attendance and the head coach was involved. Of the 22 campers, 3 have signed with UND (Maggie Manson included), and 2 others are considered top recruits this year as they will be juniors.

Re: Catch all Recruiting thread
As for starting true freshman the intent would be to redshirt the freshman, but when it seems you have a player quit, 2 get hurt and never have a full allotment of scholarship players to begin with, the freshman have to play out of necessity.
-
Re: Catch all Recruiting thread
MW doesn't have a clue to "develop" high school talent. Those that she recruited still play like highschool kids. Their conditioning looks like they are running in mud. No basic foot work, clueless on defense. European players? really? They are not that good. There is so much talent out there in highly competitive areas of the US. Kids that easily can play D1 basketball at mid major level, but get shut out. But I guess it really doesn't matter because this coach does nothing to develop the team. It's so obvious.... This is a highschool team with foreign kids mixed in... unwatchable...

Re: Catch all Recruiting thread
I know that Katerina (Katie) Leisen class of 2021 has a scholarship offer. She lives in my neighborhood in Eden Prairie but she plays for Minnetonka. The family has visited NDSU a couple of times now. I have a feeling she is going to get a lot of DI scholarships coming her way.

Re: Catch all Recruiting thread
Amber Stevahn, Fresman for BSC JUCO who I wanted NDSU to recruit last year from Shiloh Christian averaging 23.5 a game for BSC and had 44 the other night. Also, averaging 5 rebounds and 2 assists a game. Is playing the post for BSC but is really a small forward with extremely long arms.

Is she D1 material? We have room on the team and need some players
-
Re: Catch all Recruiting thread
I believe so, but I thought so last year as well. I would have brought her in in a heart beat. She didn't have ridiculous stats in HS, but if you watched a game closely you began to realize that she affected every play on the court. From continuously changing opponents shots to being the point person on the press. She is 5'11" and very long and athletic. She gives all out effort all the time which is a fantastic trait. I have heard D1 schools are calling BSC.

Can someone comment on this. Finally something is being said in the media about how terrible NDSU women's basketball is. I remember when we won national championships with local girls. The house was packed. Its hard to believe how far it is fell.

What’s with the comment ‘they found us’?
Isn’t recruiting about finding Them?

Following is taken from the end of Dom's article:
"We've got four North Dakota kids on the roster, two from Fargo, those are who I'm excited about, who found us." Walseth said. (They found us??? What the hell does that mean? We did not recruit them?)
Recruiting local kids isn't the end all, be all, but you can't ignore your own backyard. That has killed NDSU and it may still hurt for a while yet.
NDSU deputy athletic director Todd Phelps, who oversees women's basketball wrote in Walseth's evaluation that the "women's basketball program is continuing to take steps towards being a contender in the Summit League, recognizing it will take time to achieve that."
What the hell is he watching. It is only getting worse and they are not steps closer to being a contender.
I'm not sure if Phelps and I are watching the same product.
Walseth has a year left on her contract.
Is NDSU willing to wait longer (or buy her out) or keep seeing an empty SHAC and recruits go elsewhere?
That's the question NDSU has to answer. I think it is a question the media and more fans need to be asking the powers to be. Matt Larsen this is on you at this point.
-
Re: Catch all Recruiting thread
I'm a long time fan of the program & attended hundreds of games.
I watched it last night on the 10pm sports.
What the hell are Phelps and Larsen watching?
I've never met Phelps, but he sounds like a brain-dead moron to me.
How about having a coaching staff that has a clue? We DON"T have that now!
How about recruiting some D1 players? That would be a good place to start.
My solution: Dean B. should fire Larsen, Phelps, and the WBB coaching staff.
-
Re: Catch all Recruiting thread
Well this was a good piece on this mess... It's so evident, that our team full of foreign players tells me the coach is totally clueless in recruiting. Walseth has to be as brain dead as the AD. European club teams can't get enough of american players because they know how much better american women basketball players are. Yet we take European players for what? It's so obvious this team has gotten worse since Walseth arrived. Her best team/year was her first, with none of her recruits. So this tells me she can't recruit AND she can't coach. She has got to go. It's time to demand her firing...
-
Re: Catch all Recruiting thread
What are we waiting for?
Ndsu cheapness is the only reason
-
Re: Catch all Recruiting thread
I don't know how great local girls BB is but it seems there is very little actual D1 talent in the area. Klabo is good but UND isn't that great. Just not sure how well any coach will do if they rely on local talent. There's little question Walseth is not a good coach at this point. Time to move on was 2 years ago!
-
Re: Catch all Recruiting thread
1 word TWIN CITIES
there's at least 20-30 girls yearly that are D1 recruits.... NDSU hasn't had ANY success.
-
Re: Catch all Recruiting thread
Just think if Klabo would have came to NDSU. The girl from Wahpeton is playing big minutes for SDSU the best team in the Summit. The girl from Eriskine Minnesota is playing big minutes for USD the second best team. Those three could make a very good NDSU team. Didn't I see where Moorhead State is getting recruits that don't even look at NDSU? UND has got 5 of the area's best talent going there next year and their coach is not much better than Walseth.
-
Re: Catch all Recruiting thread
I think a lot of good recruits stopped coming to SU before Dehoff. A lot of parents had to spend time at the supper table talking about team issues.
