Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
Rumor has it down in Lincoln, that SDSU's big QB recruit last year is possibly going back to be a husker and probably play safety. Ebke was his name, he was a big signing for them, and as a husker fan, I was jealous they got him. I saw they are also talking about this on the SDSU board. Nothing is final yet, but I hope he does go back to Lincoln. Chase the dream kid...oh and leave SDSU without a future at QB..Ha.
I wonder why Bohl hasn't used Lincoln/Omaha better. We have signed a few kids from their, but with his ties, I sort of expected more. SDSU is doing really well down there. With the very small amount of kids that are able to go to Nebraska, that leaves two very big markets with alot of kids that can/should play college football. Omaha is a huge talent base. Merry Christmas!

I agree, NDSU needs to expand their recruiting area. Now looks like SDSU is following NDSU's lead and also heavily recruiting Wisconsin. If you look at many of the NDSU recruits from Wisconsin, SDSU is also listed as an interested school.
Some other comments.....NDSU needs to get at least one JUCO transfer for D-line, and a couple others for d-line that could start as a Freshman. This was a big hole for the Bison team this past year. As for QB, it would be nice to get a transfer or another Walker type prospect to push Mertans. Also, I think NDSU can back off the LB recruits. Seems like there are too many now. Time to focus on the areas of greatest need.

I bet that the LB will probably get moved to a different position. The best athletes in High school are usually the LB's. I am sure we are recruiting athletic talent and not just what position they played, past positions is probably an after thought.

I wish we could find another walker typer QB, but thats not exactly somethin ya find around any street corner lol

The D-line is returning 4 starters or players that were rotating from last year. There is already one JUCO coming in next year and a bunch of FR and RFr returing.
93 Bohlman, Jeff DE 6-3 235 So. Sartell, Minn. (U.S. Air Force
92 Boyer, Coulter DE 6-4 228 Fr. Hurley, S.D. (Hurley HS)
49 Compton, Nick DE 6-0 247 Jr. Rosemount, Minn. (Rosemount HS)
90 Johnson, Garrett DE 6-4 249 Fr. Chaska, Minn. (Chaska HS)
54 Lardinois, Joe DE 6-4 250 Jr. New Franken, Wis. (Notre Dame
91 Sharpe, Jimmy DE 6-1 238 RFr. Plymouth, Minn. (Wayzata HS)
98 Stoczynski, Scott DE 6-2 228 Fr. Hoffman Estates, Ill.
97 Danilkowicz, George DT 6-3 285 Fr. Green Oaks, Ill.
70 Gratzek, Matthew DT 6-2 281 RFr. Argyle, Minn.
67 Papke, Zach DT 6-0 239 RFr. Chaska, Minn. (Chaska HS)
59 Rossi, Anthony DT 5-11 269 So. Sioux City, Iowa (Morehead State)
99 Fairbairn, Mike NG 6-2 303 So. LaGrange, Ill. (Lyons Township HS)
95 Phillips, Matt NG 6-4 272 RFr. DePere, Wis. (Notre Dame Academy)
Th DL is far from a weakness. I agree that the Bison need to continue recruting quality D-lineman, but to call this area of defense a weakness is just nonsense. A few years ago, I would have agreed with you, but with 4 returning starters and 7 RFr & Soph. ready to roll next year, the 2008 Defense is going to be one of the best we have seen.

I agree. I've posted this a thousand times but Illinois should be huge considering we're moving to the Gateway and play 3 schools out of Illinois. Iowa is good but we've got to compete with Northern Iowa, Iowa, and Iowa State and they are much smaller than Illinois. Texas is good and we play the Southern Schools a lot and Bohl has been finding some good recruits.

Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
I'm wondering if Dale Lennon leaving UND will have an effect on Bison recruiting. I'm glad out coach is out there reassuring recruits that he's not going anywhere.
-
Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
I don't think it will, We are not losing recruits that I know of to them so it shouldn't have that much effect on us.
Hopefully it makes it easier to secure the talent in ND and the area around GF in MN but we were winning that battle anyway.
-
Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
I don't think losing Lennon will help NDSU, but it has to hurt UND. I don't think we are recruiting against them very often, and on the few ND kids we are....we win those battles. We are yet to lose a battle to them.
On our recruiting front, I heard we are after a kid named Kyle Martin, who is a nationally ranked punter out of South Dakota. I heard he has visited Nebraska, but will more than likely not get an offer as they have a solid young punter. I heard he is 6'6....similar to a former punter we had. I am doing some digging on this kid. I heard he was ranked in the top 12 in the nation....but that isn't totally factual yet. More later on him.
-
Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
His name is Kyle Martens, and he is a kicker, not punter. out of South Dakota. 6'6 and 185. It appears that LSU, Neb, Stanford, UNLV, Wisco, Wyo, Rice and Toledo are listed on him, I doubt all of them have offered, but he is listed on them. Would be nice to get.
-
Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
-
Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
That has him as a punter. I found him as a kicker, who cares....a 2 star kid would be nice to get to NDSU. Appears no offers. I wonder if we have offered?
-
Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
A good punter is a position that is often overlooked and under appreciated. If you have the ability to turn the field over and make a team go the length of the field to score it is a tremendous advantage for your team. I hope we can find a replacement for Drago.
-
Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
I think we have a pretty good backup punter presently on the team. I observed him warming up at one of the games. I mentioned it to Coach Bohl at teammakers and he was surprised I noticed. He might not be a Drago yet, but he has potential

Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
"I got a full-ride offer from Rice University," Martens said. "We are actually doing an official visit down there on Jan. 18. It has been hard to work around my basket ball schedule, but I'm fitting them in there.
"We have got a couple of new looks. Just recently we have been talking to Stanford and the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and also North Dakota State."
Martens, who has been ranked as the No. 9 punter in the nation and rated with five stars by professional instructor Chris Sailer, doesn't know a lot about Rice yet, but he is looking forward to that mid-January official visit.
------He also goes on to say in the article that his kickoffs were 90% touchbacks (hello), and averaged 43.2 yards per punt. Sounds like the real deal.

You don't find 2 for 1's in recruits very often. He would be a very nice pick up.

A punter AND a kicker?

Wait a second though...
If he played for the Bison, he'd have to be his own holder on extra point and FG attempts. Now THAT is worth the price of admission all by itself...

Aaron Pederson was the last NDSU player to do that...I never could figure out how he didn't at least get a shot in the NFL as a place kicker.

I guess I'm a little different - if Iowa doesn't want a recruit then maybe NDSU should pass too. I don't want to recruit too many players that other former NCC teams do I want players of a higher status. I think many of our future recruits are deciding between a FBC team and the BISON.

Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
UND is offering playing time, transitional team. NDSU is offering Championships. Some kids don't want to compete for time....they look at our depth chart and are scared away. Brewster is very open that he is offering time as well. I call it the "Zook" strategy. He implemented that at Illinois and now when the kids are Juniors, it is paying off. By the way, Brewster has a top 20 class right now. Pretty cool for the U of M.

Disagree with you.......the DL was a weakness this past year. Period. Teams ran and passed at will and that is why NDSU barely beat several teams and lost to SDSU. The returning players need much improvement and in some cases may need to be replaced by better athletes. Just because there is a bunch of Freshman players on the roster doesn't mean any are capable of contributing. How can you say just because there are 7 RFr and Soph's returning that next years defense is "going to be the one of the best we have seen"? Do you have some inside information? Five years ago Justin Frick contributed right away as a Freshman. Apparently none of these young guys were good enough this year for Bohl to bolster D-line depth.
BTW, The only recruit I am really excited about so far this year is the linebacker from Wisconsin. Hopefully there is more to come. Need some very good D lineman, a stand out QB and a great punter to maintain and improve on last years team. Last years D-line was below average and so what if a few return from that group. The QB was outstanding and the punter too, but we lost both of them to graduation. That is a fact.
-
Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
SD, Bohl is very high on two of the redshirt D-lineman. He even went on to say one of them was unblockable in practice, that is a high praise for freshman.
-
Re: 2008 Recruiting Radar
SDBison...you went grumpy after the game in Brookings. The Co-workers still bugging you about it or what?
Just because a kid is a redshirt does not mean they don't think he could have contributed....they just make a business decision. Kids are going to be in school for 5 years anyway, I think they all should...in all sports...unless they start.

I didn't say all of last years D-lineman individually were below average.......just as a group (injuries and all) they played that way.

No Burgundy......I just disagree with a several of the mainstays on this website regarding recruiting and scheduling. Any point of view different from them must make me an outcast. I believe I usually back up my opinions with some facts. As for the SDSU game, that still bugs me because NDSU should have won that game. Kind of reminds me of the choking that went on in the later years with UND. Close wins by them gives credability to their programs and seems to make NDSU that much more unsure of its capabilities.
