Verbal Commitments
I'll just post them as I find them:
NDSU got a commitment from Nick Jackson from Cleveland, Ohio. Coach Babich must have been doing some recruiting when he went back to PA.
Anyway, the numbers are: *6-1, 185, 1,900 yards passing, 400 yards rushing.
The Full Story

Re: Verbal Commitments
Bryan Lanzy, Cretin-Derham Hall, 6'3 220, TE.
Second-team all-state in Minnesota. He also ran the ball a bit, 7 times for 138 yards and 3 TDs (!!!) according to Star Tribune. Threw discus, high jumped, triple jumped, and ran the occasional long sprint in track.

Re: Verbal Commitments
NDSU has made offers to two players and are currently in a decent position to land them ( at least no other DII team is going to get them).
The two players are Rich Majeski (the Star Tribune's Metro and the AP State player of the year) and Marcus Fitzgerald from Holy Angels. Now, if Rich really wants to go DI-A, I hope that he gets his offer. Wyoming is going to be sniffing around him so he might get one this weekend.
More from the Star Tribune

Re: Verbal Commitments
John Majeski was the key player for Hastings State Championship team in 2001, and Quarter-final finish in 2002. He was the key Running Back, also would line-up as a Receiver, and even threw a TD pass. He also played Defensive Back, Place Kicker, Punter, Kick Returner, Punt Returner. Played pretty much every play. He has D-I talent. Fitzgerald has a brother Larry that is a great receiver for the Pitt Panther. Marcus is an excellant player too.

Re: Verbal Commitments
Man, NDSU is seriously hitting the road this year. They're going after Adrian Herry from Illinois. He's another guy, like Majeski and Fitzgerald, that NDSU is trying to wrestle away from a DI-A football school.
A little blurb about it here
No hard numbers on him, but he's a defensive end/OLB and he plays basketball too.
I found another story that said he was coming up for a visit this weekend.
Another story

Re: Verbal Commitments
I think being able to mention D1AA to Chicago area recuits opens the door. You could have flashed all seven D2 rings in his face and he would not have been impressed. Good luck to the Bison in this years recruiting class. It looks like your program is on its way back. The comeback starts with some *great recruiting choices. *I just hope we don't back to the days where the SDSU-NDSU game was over by half time. >:(

Re: Verbal Commitments
More news on another possible big transfer. This past weekend...Dominique Sims...safety from the U of M...was on campus. Many may remember that name. He played at DeLaSalle in the Cities...and was the Minnesota player of the year. Was suppose to be a huge recruit for the Gophers. Apparently is looking to transfer...and is supposedly very interested in the Bison.
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
I know I'm dreaming! Anthony Schlegel/Lb out of Air Force. He's leaving the school. anyway looks like were making progress for next season.
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
It's been a quiet recruting year so far. Suppose NDSU is saving four scholarships for Sims, Herry, Majeski, and Fitzgerald, it's possible that they won't get any of them. Since last year's recruting class was so deep, they can probably afford to take a gamble like that.
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
If we dont get them we will have probably 10 full rides next year since we will be increasing scholarships. I havent heard if we plan to ump to the full 63 in one year but I would imagine we will increase some each year.
A second thought has me wondering if Babich is going to be able to redeem himself if all of this recruiting comes through. Can we use these new players effectively?
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
Recruits or not, I've personally had it with Babich. If he doesn't want to be here....then far be it from us lowly Bison to keep him here.
I talked to Gene Taylor last night at the NDSU v SDSU Wrestling Dual and he wondered how we heard about all this information so fast. It hadn't been on the news, or in the forum (as of that moment). He did confirm both the Babich rumor, and the Rondeau rumor.
He wouldn't comment on the Dominique Simms deal though........odd, huh? maybe not.
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
Hey Schemer, he probably can't talk about possible recruits because of NCAA regs so it's not that odd.
Anyway, I jJust got an email saying that Alex Wiese from La Crescent, MN has committed to NDSU - and he did it over a week ago. I don't know if the person who sent the email wants credit so I'll leave it at that.
The story he referred me to was:
LaCrosse Tribune
Here's another article about him:
Second article
I guess TE Mike Wieser has to get some of the credit for getting him to commit to NDSU. *It is a little confusing though, I kept typing Mike Wiese.
---------------------
And I thought that I had repeated the Bison Insider scoop about the two Illinois recruits but I don't see it.
They are WR Mike Dragosavich (6'5, 190 lbs) and RB Cinque Chapman (5'11, 190 lbs). BTW, you pronounce Cinque as SIN-Q not CHEENKWAY (that's the Italian way) or SANK (that the French way) or SINKIE (that's the UND way).
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
I e-mailed Charley Walters, Pioneer Press Sports Columnist, about the rumor of Gopher S Dominique Sims transferring to the Bison. Here's what he replied:
jd: checked; nothing to it. thanks for headsup, though. best, chas
So my guess is that it is a dead issue? Who knows? JD

Re: Verbal Commitments
The Wiese kid sounds like a stud. Hopefully, we'll see him shine in the backfield for the next four years.
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
According to edgytim.com (Illinois Prep Spotlight)....
- *New* Another Illinois verbal commitment... LB Jason DePolo (6'1" 225 lbs.) Lincoln-Way Central H.S., New Lenox, IL... DePolo also competes in wrestling... (1/25/03)
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
I'm still amazed that you found those recruits in the first place. I never would have found out about these guys with the BisonInsider tip off - so thanks a lot.
The link to a story on the EdgyTim site is kind of interesting so here it is:
EdgyTim take on NDSU's recruiting
Note: EdgyTim keeps writing Chinque Chapman instead of Cinque Chapman but everything else I've seen (which isn't much) has his first name spelled as Cinque.
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
Yet, another Illinois commitment and a darn good one. This recruiting class just keeps getting better and better.
EdgyTim.com Offensive Player of the Year Steve Walker (6'1 - 190 lbs.) has committed to North Dakota State. The Lockport quarterback chose the Bison over an offer from Eastern Illinois and late interest from Wyoming.
"I took an official visit (to ND State) over the weekend and had a great visit. It came down to Eastern Illinois and ND State and after seering the facilities, the coaches the players ... It just felt right and heading to ND State will be a great opportunity for me."
Walker becomes the fourth Chicago Area prospect to commit to the Bison in 2003. He led the Porters to it's first ever Class 8A state title in 2002 with 3,981 yards passing and 33 touchdowns.
Can Bob leave this? Still hope he does.... JD
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
Who is the assistant that is recruiting Illinois? Better keep him on any future staff!
Craig
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
The Ivy League schools were also after Steve Walker too so he's a student. To me once a player gets on the team, their past stats don't matter because they're all part of the Herd but, holy cow, you could hardly dream up more impressive stats for a QB.
- He led his team through five playoff rounds to win the big school (8A) Illinois state championship, engineering winning final drives in three of the five games
- Passed for 3,981 yards, 33 TDs (or 34 depending on who you ask) in his senior year
- Illinois Player of the Year (edgyTim's)
- Powerbar national player of the week
- Top 100 players in the Chicago area (along with Jason DePolo, another of the Illinois recruits)
- Rushed for 148 yards in the championship game so he isn't stationary.
- 2nd most completions in a season, third most yards in a season in Illinois prep history.
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
Isn't that three incoming quarterbacks (4 if you count Stauss)? That should provide some pretty stiff competition at that position for the next few years. I wonder if the same coach that recruits Milwaukee is hitting Chicago. Anybody know who that may be. Hopefully it isn't Rondeau.
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
Add another dandy to the commitment list:
GopherHole.com reports that Orono's OL/DL Jamie Bechdol (6' 5 - 270 lbs.) has ended his recruitment and chose North Dakota State over interest from San Jose State, Iowa State and Illinois. Bechdol was also a recruited walk-on candidate for Minnesota... (1/28/03)
Getting even better.... JD
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
My God, another Illinois commitment:
Illinois Prep Spotlight (edgytim.com) reports LB Joe Mays Chicago - *Hyde Park H.S. (6'2" 220 lbs) has committed to the Bison..... Listed in the Sun Times Top 100 players of the Chicago area. More to come....
Somebody find out the wonder recruiter is down their in Cubbie Land.... *JD
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
And I thought that this year's class was going to be the weakest of the next five years. Holy cow!
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
Man.....this almost makes a guy have a little faith in Babich....

Re: Verbal Commitments
It is quite apparent that the Sioux are taking on more ND high school athletes than the Bison are this year. Is this due to the DIAA move (inferring that ND football players are not DIAA players) or because NDSU can't get the good local talent due to the reputation of the program? I am guessing it has to do with talent level, but will this affect the amount of local interest and support that the Bison receive? I have noticed that SDSU has not made much noise with verbals from local SD kids, so they could be facing the same problems. I did hear that one SD kid will sign with NDSU, but haven't heard of any others.
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
Who is the kid from South Dakota going to NDSU? I live in SD and haven't heard anything.
I, for one, expected little NDSU recruiting activity in North Dakota. Only a couple kids come to mind when I think of possible D-IAA players this year. There just wasn't much for blue chip players in North Dakota. JD
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
I have heard little about SDSU commitments and have no idea where they have been out in terms of bush beating for recruits. I would hope Illinois, but we will probably find out next week.
There was a short blurp in the Argus Leader that a Wulf kid had committed to SDSU. I believe he had older brother who was good football player and a sister who played some basketball.
As far as SD player commiting to NDSU, that not a surprise. I have no details though.
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
NDSU is recruiting the talent that they need to position themselves to be successfull. The fact that ND players arent making that much noise at NDSU has already been addressed by Tony. NDSU will always get their share of the local players.
The programs are headed in different directions. Certainly there can be some expectation that in the begining the sorting out process is going to cause some confusion. NDSU is always going to get their share of the local talent, today, tommorrow and on into the future.
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
The kid from South Dakota that is coming to NDSU is Justin Frick from Yankton SD.
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
JBB,
This is where we'll agree to disagree. Tony and I have hashed this out a couple of time about the recruiting of local talent.
Conclusion. There won't be as many local kids playing for NDSU, unless they are true Division I material. There are too many kids from Chicago, Milwaukee, the Twin Cities that are Division I material and are ready to sign for the scholarship. This will really be evident this recruiting year as the amount of blue chippers in ND is very limited. Dykema of Strasburg being one of them (UND?). Now I can't speak for the Minnesota side of the Red River, so I'll shut up and go back to my hole.... JD
Sidenote: I did not hear a thing about Frick committing. I have not seen anything in the SF Argus Leader about it... They did a good job keeping it quiet. He's a hell of player. I watched the Watertown - Yankton game this year and he definitely stood out. Great pick up...
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
Hey Bucky,
Why didn't Frick get more attention from the South Dakota Schools? Hey man, give me an email. Let me knows what's going on with your bad self. You can get my email on the Insider site. Colin

Re: Verbal Commitments
Bison may have found their answer at the other cornerback opposite of Gorman. They got a commitment from Walt Gilbert (6'0, 175) out of Milwaukee Vincent. StudentSports.com ranks him as the 51st best corner in the nation. He had an offer from Iowa and interest from Northwestern and Notre Dame. Apparently though...he didn't have the grades and would have had to sit out a year. So he's coming to Fargo instead. Nice!
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
Yeah, I'd agree with JD that there won't be as many ND kids playing for NDSU unless the talent level in the state rises. However, I'm not going to worry about it too much because it's pointless for now.
And btw, I said it over on Bison Insider but if NDSU lands Justin Frick that will be fantastic. I wonder if he would wrestle too - I read that he had a six-second pin this year. Walt Gilbert could be something special too - he is a jumper with speed (hurdler, sprinter, and has gone over 45 feet in the triple jump).
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
Im sorry fellows but we are disagreeing to agree. *We will get our share is what I meant, our share of the DI players. *As this thing plays out not many true DI regional talents are going to want to spend their playing years at DII unless of course they feel the University they pick is going to give them more of what they need for their future. *In fact, we wont be competing any longer with UND or the other DII schools around here for too many players. We may offer partials or encourage local players that are marginal DI to walk on, but the full rides are going to be reserved for the right people.
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
Just a note: If you hear or read of commitments to the Bison, please tell us your source of information so Tony and I can make a confirmation. I don't want to speak for Tony, but I will not post a commitment on the Insider site without confirmation. Thanks, JD
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
Just got confirmation from KDLT sports in Sioux Falls, SD.... NDSU has received a verbal commitment from OL/DL Justin Frick (6'4 - 260#) from Yankton, South Dakota. Frick was 1st Team 11AA SD Sports Writers selection on defense for the Class 11AA champion Yankton Bucks. He was recruited by several D-I schools including Colorado, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Stanford, Wyoming, and Notre Dame.

Re: Verbal Commitments
I have close friends in Yankton who are on the inside with Justin Frick and his family. The word is that he chose NDSU over Augustana. This fact has to hurt SDSU even more.
-
Re: Verbal Commitments
In response to earlier posts: no, I wouldn't put a blurb on the site about a verbal commitment unless there was a source to go along with it. If it's rumored on a message board, that's just not enough - you never know who's posting what.
-----------
But here's some more verbals from Wisconsin:
Milwaukee Journal Sentinal Article
Three new verbals for NDSU:
Eric Miller, RB, Greenfield: honorable mention all-state. First team all-region. 246 carries for 1605 yards and 16 TDs.
Symeon Cabell, S-RB, Cudahy. From Lamar Gordon's school.
Casey Radtke, TE, Oshkosh North. Throws shot and discus in track - pretty good in both. Also plays basketball.
------------------
Other NCC/NSIC Schools
UND:
Andy White, OLB-DE, Arrowhead
Duane Wenzel, S, Janesville Parker
Andy Soll, G, Fond du Lac
Duluth:
Jon Rufledt, ILB, Bloomer
Dan Hall, S, Valders
Augustana:
Jayson Winterfeldt, G-C
Mankato:
Dan Harke, ILB, Stevens Point
Brandon Stroik, S, Marshfield
Dan Smedberg, SS-OLB, Fond du Lac
---------------------
Here are the NCC/NSIC offers still outstanding:
-Mike Maloch 6'2 260 DT (Minn-Duluth and St. Cloud)
-Jonte Flowers 6'4 170 WR (UND and Winona)
-Kyle Opahle 6'2 190 QB (NDSU)
----------------------
Other points of interest:
-Luke Swan, WR, Fennimore plans to walk on at Wisconsin
-Walt Gilbert is still not listed as having committed anywhere
As you can see, there were a lot of NCC teams out hitting WI this year, so NDSU hitting Chicago was a good strategic move.

Re: Verbal Commitments
I've got a very good friend down in Yankton and he was pretty surprised when he heard that Frick was coming to SU. He had heard Iowa St. was after him pretty hard. He went on to say that Frick totally dominated the kid from Sioux Falls that had made a verbal to Oklahoma. ;D
