State of the University address
Link below to the transcript of today's State of University address by President Bresciani.
Actually a really good read. As I read through it, I was reminded about just how solid NDSU really is and what it has accomplished. Of course, there's always going to be a good news tilt in a state of the university address. But reading this speech has boosted my optimism for NDSU's future.
Interesting side note: Bresciani ended his speech by talking about his connection to the university. He feels so strongly about NDSU, that he is leaving his entire estate to the university. That tells me that despite being a lame duck president, he is not going to be phoning it in. That bodes well for those of us hoping he might still find us a spot in FBS before he departs. He clearly still cares about the long trajectory for NDSU, even though he is stepping down. I have no doubt that a building on campus at some point will be named after him, and justifiably so. Thank you for your service, President Bresciani.

Wow, that’s pretty incredible by President Bresciani! Incredibly honorable.

That is crazy and honorable. I guess he doesn't have any family to leave it to? Still sad to see him go.

Maybe his family already has enough money or he thinks they don't deserve any inheritance? I'm not expecting anything from my parents because they might give everything to charities so won't be disappointed if my only inheritance is trying to clear the stuff in their house so it can be put up for sale.

So what stops NDSU from hiring a puppet and letting Bresciani rule from the shadows

Doesn’t the SBoHE do the hiring?
If we get a puppet it’ll be theirs so boo to that idea.

The gift is incredible and crazy. He should do a book deal if he hasn't already. There very lucrative. More for SU.
His counterpart at UND Mark Kennedy the last 5 years had 2 pretty successful little scores. Probably got a nice little check while at UND for his book in 2017.
Then at Colorado another nice little buyout check. Doubt he'll leave his money to UND.
Like Jules said to Ringo put it in your pocket it's yours.
No El_Chapo in this thread.

These are out again, and I was curious about ETSU after some Lakes-directed smack I saw on their board. Again, these are .org (not .com) which means they can’t be bought and sold. Number to right is national rank.
I’m sure these are all fine schools, but what you can read into the number is a measure of grant success and PhD production.
MSU, 174 (178)
UM, 183 (182)
SIU, 199
NDSU, 205 (210)
SDSU, 239 (248)
UND, 255 (257)
USD, 277 (285)
JMU, 310
ETSU, 324
SHU, 343
Number in () is previous national ranking (20-21)
SD schools with the steepest (+) slope of the 4 Dakotas

Subscription not required for that link. Just dismiss the nag ...
The link compares any two schools from the WSJ/Times rankings for undergrad experience. The poster you reference on the ETSU board seemed to be talking about Doctoral programs comparison, which is not covered in the WSJ data.

That poster also said ETSU alines better with UND. Read into that what you will.
I myself chuckled when I read that.

Their board is frustratingly inactive and they really have no smack game as far as I can tell. Guessing they are not yet in the "Just Happy To Be Here" phase but rather still in the "Damn SHOCKED To Be Here" phase.
Assuming things play out per Expectation this weekend it's going to be quite different around here next week. CAS' affinity for canines notwithstanding there will be some despicable mutts sniffing around come Saturday night...

It appears said poster is technically correct
It is surprisingly dead over there, but using Bisonville as a metric isn't probably all that fair

They either need a "Politics" board or some FBS talk. It would liven it right up.

Re: State of the University address
Both schools are listed as R2. That's probably enough but our endowment crushes theirs.
-
Re: State of the University address
Is that right? I didn’t look. I don’t put much weight in Carnegie, which is why I never bring it up. It’s like saying bot schools are FCS. Is there a difference on the FB field do you think? I guess we’ll find out this weekend.
Carnegie is too coarse to give much info. It’s more like a gold star on your forehead. That said, folks at NDSU tell me they are very close to achieving R1 again, which is remarkable given the cuts from the state they’ve sustained. I have no doubt that the NDSU administration is eager to get that star back.
-
Re: State of the University address
Well heck. What do you know? NDSU is now R1 again.
"NDSU is the only institution to earn this designation in North Dakota. In fact, NDSU, the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and Montana State University are the only institutions in the six-state region of North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and Idaho to achieve such distinction."
That's actually very impressive

Yes, I was very happy to see that email. That is a nice accomplishment for DB on his way out.

NDSU > Wyoming, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, South Dakota State, South Dakota, North Dakota.

Re: State of the University address
Now for the bad news. The buzz I’m hearing is that NDSU enrollment is down again, while UND is up. Might as well get it out of the way and move forward
To understand this, you have to look at the backstory. DB created the current funding model and pushed it on Bismarck. At the same time, he completely gutted Distance and Continuing Ed at NDSU. UND, in contrast, was smart enough to read the writing on the wall in terms of demographic trends and invested heavily in online ed. Now they reap the benefits. It’s not going to help them with research, but it does get them more funding from the state. Hats off to them for not being stupid …

I’m not sure how much success the NDSU President had in getting the funding model he actually wanted. I seem to recall the legislature completely reversing what had been recommended and introduced and basically sticking with the status quo and calling it something new.

True, the relationship was antagonistic from day 1. This is where Cook will have to be a diplomat. Hopefully he can get it tweaked. Stay tuned
Trust me, it is not in NDs overall interest to keep gashing away at NDSU. I'll trust Bismarck to see this fact. NDSU is and has been an engine of commerce for the state, and while I encourage and embrace belt tightening, there will be a point of diminishing returns. I don't know what the new plan is regarding on-line ed at NDSU, but if covid shows us anything ...

On-Line is slowly coming back, and is a priority, but you're absolutely right: DB and Beth Ingram completely gutted it, ten years of work down the drain.

You seem obsessed with North Dakota's medical school and law school. Did they reject your application or whats the deal?

If its true that incoming freshman numbers are up yet again, that seems pretty promising and you would have to give him credit for that. Hopefully the trend continues and on-line kicks in to give a good boost

But they DO have a med school and law school, correct?
NDSU is also in the middle of nowhere and has neither of those. Soooooo......ya.
I know multiple people who are doctors and lawyers making way more money than you can ever dream of, who went to UND for just those exact degrees.

With a few exceptions, the worst law and medical schools are probably still pretty good schools. My sister and two cousins graduated from UND Medical School and are doing quite well. Saying Fargo and Grand Forks are vastly different shows a complete lack of relative comparison. There are a lot more alike than different. I definitely prefer Fargo more because it's bigger and has more to offer and I have great memories there. But it's not that different.
I often wonder if actually believes the things he says or just likes to get replies like this one.

If you are referring to lakes / el chapo. He believes every word of it. Many on this board that know him outside of this board will concur.

Re: State of the University address
Really too bad Bresciani didn’t want to go on-line. NDSU would be doing quite well in that arena, likely much better than UND, but now it’s going to do some damage
But then again, kind of odd to reward a school with more on-line students simply because they are students
