Countdown To The End Of The Transition [Archive]

As soon as Midnight struck on July 1, 2007 and as we became official Summit League members, it means the last year of our transition to NCAA Division I. I have personally been waiting for July 1, 2008 for a VERY LONG time now, and I wanted to start a countdown thread to the stroke of midnight on 7/1/08, when we become official FULL-FLEDGED members of Division I.

Because there is a leap day this upcoming February, there is technically 366 days now until that fateful day.

So I want to start out the countdown at 366 days!! If no one else updates the countdown, I'll be happy to contribute to the thread daily.

I had a plan to celebrate the Summit Conference at midnight, but to be honest with you I could not find the Summit Beer that I brought to open. Of course that was because someone had moved it to a different one of the 10 coolers, and there was just about 200 beer samples between the 10 coolers.

All this talk on ESPN about NCAA Tourney brackets makes me wish this countdown was at zero by now. I'm not saying we would go, I'm just saying that we would have the opportunity to play for the chance at the Summit tourney. Almost any mid-major can make the Big Dance with three lucky games in early March. That's why I wish we were eligible NOW.

The final scheduled Bison athletic events during the transition period are next week. The Summit League outdoor track championships thurs-sat and the Bison baseball team hosting SDSU thur-fri-sat at Newman Outdoor Field.

Without these successful steps such as the self study, the number of days countdown means nothing, because there is no automatic membership in D-I after being in transition for a certain length of time. There are many other requirements by the NCAA to become a full Division I member. Great job by all of the people involved in completing these important tasks!

Fargo, N.D., June 26 – North Dakota State University has been approved as an active, certified member of NCAA Division I. The announcement was made today by the NCAA Management Council.

“This is an important and exciting day for NDSU and the state we serve,” said President Joseph A. Chapman. “The NCAA announcement illustrates the tremendous support our students, faculty, staff and the state have shown to make NDSU a top-tier institution, both academically and athletically.”

“This is the day we been waiting for since we made the decision to move to Division I. This is a great and historic day for our athletic program and the university,” said athletic director Gene Taylor. “It is a culmination of a lot of hard work, dedication and commitment by our staff, coaches and, most importantly, our student athletes. We have also had tremendous support from President Chapman, his cabinet members, faculty, university staff, our student body, our community and our alumni. We would not have made the transition without all of these wonderful and supportive individuals.”

The university’s decision to seek NCAA Division I status was announced in August 2002. The transition process included NCAA site visits, searches for conference affiliations and a year-long, campuswide self-study of NDSU’s athletics operations that explored the areas of academic integrity, governance, rules compliance, equity, diversity and student athlete welfare.

“In 2002, we began what we knew would be a challenging transition to Division I,” Chapman said. “Our commitment to being a nationally ranked land-grant institution played a key role in pushing through that challenge. Reaching for Division I was the right thing to do for our athletic program, this university and our state. I am extremely proud of the many people who have contributed their talents and resources to this effort.”

NDSU is a member of The Summit League, the Gateway Football Conference and the Western Wrestling Conference.
