Who will be the new head coach? Want to get everyone's opinon. I was at the redhawks game today and if they could persuade Mongo away from the Redhawks I think that would be a outstanding hire. Him and his family are part of Fargo. He is young and his baseball credits speak for themselves. I will be the first to say it. Please Gene and please Lynn keep Mongo a bison and do the right thing.

Gene said the other night that they would begin a Nationwide search as soon as possible, but there was no current deadline for getting the new coach hired.

Please forgive my ignorance, who's Mongo?

Steve Montgomery the pitching coach for NDSU and the RedHawks.

I think the biggest question is what is Gene going to do for a salary for the new head coach? Mitch (not by choice) was half teaching and half coaching salary wise. He had been trying for years to become full time as head coach but Gene would not fund it. I believe athletics portion of Mitch's salary was around $20,000. Your not going to get anyone leaving even an NAIA for that kind of cash. So where is the extra $15-20,000 going to finally come from? The budgets are set. Is he going to take some money out of football and basketballs budgets to cover it like he did to baseball ($20,000) and softball ($30,000)two years ago to cover Tim Miles and his assistants new pay raises. Any coach that has had any success at a lower level will laugh at the scholarship level and what is allowed for so many other things. University of Mary even has more scholarships! Does anyone else see a major problem with that picture?

I think the biggest slap in the face was the fact that there were at least 4 if not 5 former students of Mitch's that were coaches in the athletic department last year that ALL made more then him. One even got a salary raise last year larger then he makes in a year. Talk about a slap in the face.

I ran into one of the players last night who talked to Mongo and was told there were 25 applicants for the job. I personally would like to see Mongo get it. He's young and excited about the opportunity.

A few of my questions to anyone who knows...

- Does Mongo have any recruiting experience?

- How much was he involved with the team operations under McLeod (scheduling, budget management, etc)?

- What kind of connections does he have to fill a coaching staff, and to network with high school and JUCO coaches for recruiting?

Looks like screening will begin Tuesday, June 12

The deadline for applications is next week, so there may be still more coming in. I heard that several D-I assistant coaches have applied.

If they were going to look at a Redhawk for the new coach Jeff Bittinger
would be the guy. Has known Siminuc for years, pitching coach, pro scout,
should be very well connected in the college ranks.

How would he have any connection to the college ranks especially within NDSU? He was a scout, his job is to evaluate prospects and how they would fit in the pro level. Just because he has known Siminuc for years means absolutely nothing! If anyone with a Redhawk connection who would be a good fit for the job, obviously it would be Mongo! Who's to say he has any interst let alone whether or not he actually applied for the position?

Bittiger is hardly with the Redhawks anymore. He is basically a consultant/evaluator for players. He is a scout with the A's. As far as Mongo, looking at the Redhawks has nothing to do with it. Mongo is the pitching coach for the Redhawks, AND NDSU. The fact he has been with the NDSU program the past three years has more to do with it than anything.

#1- On campus recruiting as well as numersous phone calls. I believe because of his current professional ties he is unable to travel off campus. On top of that, they havent had the budget to send a coach other then Mitch out recruiting until this next year anyway so that hasnt even been a factor.

#2- Once BJ left, Mongo assumed all of those duties in January. BJ left alot of things a mess ordering stock uniforms that are falling apart and the worst of everything a CHEAP batting cage that after half a year is already falling apart and has turned Newman's cage into the equilivent of a pin ball machine so he has had to clean up alot of that left over mess.

#3- The guy played organized baseball for several years. Played under current legendary Georgia Tech head coach Danny Hall at Kent State. Used his connection with a former professional teamate who is an assistant coach at Miami University to schedule a series with the Hurricanes two years ago but Gene wouldnt approve the trip funding. He has PLENTY of connections. Expecially in the world of recruiting where he could get info on players out of the area from people he knows can evaluate.

Alright, I have lots of questions and I just wanted to see how many answers are out there. I am assuming that they have started the phone interviews.

How many coaches will or have received phone interviews?

What is the timeline for bringing the finalists on campus? How many finalists will they bring in?

Is there an obvious front runner? I've seen the reports on the ex IU coach and Washington State coach, but are there any exceptional coaches in the region in the mix?

Which candidates best fill the NCAA D1 and cold weather requirement stipulation?

Who do you want as your baseball coach?

Suprised no one has posted this yet:
Mongo out of running at NDSU (http://www.areavoices.com/mcfeely/?blog=9781)

Montgomery said he likes his job with the RedHawks and isn't ready to give up professional baseball, which he'd have to do if he got the Bison job. He likes his double duties as a college and pro coach.

Ugly record at IUP. :hide:

After taking over following the 2005 season and going 10-41 overall/3-17 PSAC with the program he was handed, they then went 20-28 overall/10-10 PSAC with Ditch's first class of recruits, including 9 Freshman pitchers...

From IUP's website:
Season Recap

IUP doubled its win total from the previous year, finishing the season with an overall record of 20-28 and breaking even at 10-10 in the PSAC West.

The Crimson Hawks reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since 1998 and only the third time in the past 15 years.

IUP finished at .500 in the PSAC West for the first time since going 11-9 in 2003 and came a year after winning just three division contests.

Third baseman Tyler Wise and shortstop Paul Bingham were named to the All-PSAC West second team. Both hit over .400, becoming the first set of IUP teammates to reach that mark in 10 years.

Wise was also named to the All-North Atlantic Region first team.

[QUOTE=bisonpride2k;130731]Andy Sawyers Bio-

"The Nebraska baseball team’s trying 2007 season may be over, but there’s still some shakeup left in the Huskers.

On Friday, coach Mike Anderson announced that five-year assistant Andy Sawyers is leaving the program...The 32-year-old Sawyers, a Nebraska graduate and two-year player for the Huskers who worked with the catchers, was the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator, said he’s considering a couple of options working in professional baseball and another outside of the sport."

http://www.journalstar.com/articles/2007/06/17/huskerextra/doc46734de0b4ae4186501953.txt

"Asked if he was satisfied with Sawyers' work, Anderson declined to answer.

"I wouldn't go there," the coach said. "That's not part of this process. What is part of the process is what we're going to do in the future."

Anderson described the resignation as "a final agreement" after a series of discussions with Sawyers."
