Obscure College Score of the Week No. 1: Pittsburg of Kansas 63, Southwest Baptist 20. Pittsburg of Kansas is the Matewan High of college football, a team that seeks out weak opponents then relentlessly runs up the score against them. Two years ago, on its way to having the highest-scoring season in college football history, Pittsburg of Kansas faked a punt while leading 63-7. Then faced with an equal foe, the Gorillas honked the Division II title game. This Saturday, Pittsburg of Kansas led Southwest Baptist 49-17 at the start of the fourth quarter yet continued to pass, relentlessly trying to run up the score on a completely overmatched opponent. Earlier this season, in an ugly display of bad sportsmanship, the Gorillas ran the score up to 87-0 against helpless little Panhandle State. (Currently Panhandle is 0-7 with four losses by at least 50 points.) Apparently they don't have character-education courses at Pittsburg of Kansas but they do have plenty of punks in the football office. Presumably when Pittsburg of Kansas meets a real opponent in the playoffs it will collapse as usual.

Some national publicity for Pittsburg State from ESPN's Page 2 Tuesday Morning Quarterback. He has been reading their scores and ripping on Pitt State for the past couple of years for running up the score.

Pitt State is a great program with a great coach. Coach Broyles' team was always a great foe in the playoffs for the Bison. Another solid option team.

A fair point to bring up though. Why run up the score like that when you obviously have your foe beaten. Faking a punt or field goal while your up by that much? I always thought Broyles was a stand up guy but doing something like that is just wrong.

Broyles is one of those coaches that if he gets you down he'll try to beat you by 100.

PSU passed four times in the fourth quarter and completed two (backup QB).

SW Baptist was passing on every down. If the game was over, why were they doing that?

The PSU story wasn't well researched in some ways. For example, it implies that Pitt State seeks out weak opponents. Actually, many of their huge victory margins come from conference games. That's probably an indication of the overall strength of the MIAA. Usually a couple of very good teams and the rest are really really bad.

There might be something to the argument that PSU runs up the score at times but, there are a lot of things to consider other than purely the final score. Our local high school team almost hung a 100-0 on a team last year and you have no idea how hard our coaches tried to keep from scoring. It was almost comical and everybody at the game saw why the score got the way it did. Nobody complained and the other school complimented us but people who saw only the score were outraged.

The Pitt St. team, IMO is a reflection of their coach. Hard nose, no nonsense, no frills, no mercy, and just plain tough. Broyles does not seem IMO to be a high charater guy. He like his cupcakes, and he eats a lot of them, figuritively and literally. He does have a great coaching record however and is probably near the top in D2 winning percentatge. The MIAA now has more parity than in the past. Pitt used to totally dominate the conference.

Why hasn't he moved up the coaching ladder?

You can look at it as running up the score, but I would guess that most of the players were second to fourth string players who don't otherwise get a chance to play. They have to learn to run the offense (the entire offense) against a different team at college level speed. How else do the backups learn. Four passes in the entire quarter is not that bad IMHO. Now, a fake punt is senseless..... but the rest makes sense. If you can't stop the 4th stringers, you cant stop them.

Let's be real. A good football team with a winning record does not qualify a school for a D1 move, which is about much more than football and athletics. Pittsburg, KS is down the list in the MIAA for moving D1 IMO. Mo. Southern (1/2 hour away from Pitt in the MIAA) would probably be better qualified than Pitt, just because of the city comparison and corp. dollar support potential. Pittsburg is sort of Vermillionish. Would not be easy.
