This announcement probably comes at no surprise to most readers on this board. This is what I expected them to announce!

The fact that the NCC is going to disband after the 2007-08 season is a sad comment on D-II athletics. I really wish the NCC could have been salvaged and it is a dark day when NCC teams are trying to get into the NSIC.

The NCC probably would have had a chance to survive had it not chosen Roger Thomas as its leader.

Maybe, but I think that it would have been a significant uphill battle regardless. Just disappointing to see the conference that so many of us played in get disbanded.

No way; Jesus Christ himself couldn't have saved the NCC.

The only way the NCC would've been saved is if the whole thing would've moved DI.

I guess I would agree with you.

Think about this, the whole conference NOT moving to DI may have been a blessing in disguise for the XDSU's. Would NDSU be scheduling the DI programs, such as Wisconsin, the Gophers, Marquette, and Texas Tech. Would SDSU be playing the likes of Kansas, USC, the Gophers. I am talking all sports.

I think that the only way the NCC could have been saved would be if there were more teams interested in adding the scholarships to jump in to the NCC and if they had started expanding well in advance of NDSU, SDSU, etc moving on to D-I. If thre process of trying to save the conference had started earlier maybe something could have been done, but probably not. Just disappointing to see schools from a great conference like the NCC go begging to an inferior conference like the NSIC.

Roger's vision came true. It will be his legacy.

Sad comment on DII football... *2006 playoff teams school enrollments (estimate)

Newberry * * * * * *840 * * * * Mo. Western * * * *5100 * * * * * West Chester * *12300
Northwood * * * * *1400 * * * *NWMS * * * * * * * *6000 * * * * * *U of ND * * * * * *12800
Merrimack * * * * *2000 * * * *S Connecticut * * *6000 * * * * * *U Neb Omaha * 14000
Chadron * * * * * * 2711 * * * *Midwestern St * * 6500 * * * * * GVSU * * * * * * * 23200
Elizabeth City * * *2500 * * * *North Alabama * *7000
Bryant * * * * * * * *3200 * * * *Bloomsburg * * * *7300
Delta St * * * * * * *3200 * * * *West Texas AM * *7400
Albany St * * * * * *3700 * * * *NC central * * * * *8200
Shepherd * * * * * *4000 * * * *Winona St * * * * * 8200
Abeline Christian *4400 * * * *U of SD * * * * * * *8600

Is it any wonder that GVSU is dominating the DII scene? *What the heck are they doing as a DII school.

So... you have USD looking to bolt, UND will bolt, UNO should bolt but won't, DII is a shell of what it was 10-15 years ago. Blame the reduction of scholarships in the name of mediocrity. *

GVSU really should be in D-I. Just in the Big 12, GVSU has an enrollment greater than that of Baylor, Kansas State, Nebraska and Oklahoma State.

Do they have the money to go?

Jeffdaryl3rd

Also, they may not think that they have the resources to move to D-I and still win national championships. *If that is the case, then staying in D-II and winning national titles is not a bad option.

Edit: This reference made to GVSU, not MSU-Mankato.

Does anyone know how many sports they have?

20, or 23 if you count indoor and outdoor track separately like the NCAA does (dumb) and you count bowling as an actual sport (even dumber).
Men's
Baseball, Basketball, XC, Football, Golf, Hockey, Track (indoor/outdoor), swimming, tennis and wrestling

Women's
Basketball, Bowling, XC, Golf, Hockey, Track (indoor/outdoor), soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, volleyball.

IMO, there should have been more "recruitment" to schools like U of Mary, Minot State, and perhaps a Caroll college for the NCC. I was very disappointed to see 24 scholarships still the standard for the NSIC and not more, sad. A Northern State might have even been a good fit, oh well.

Doesn't Moorhead State have an even (much) lower level of scholarships than that?

I hear that Scandrett planned a huge bake sale for October, but they had trouble getting Flavorite chocolate chips.

I thought they had something like 7 scholarships.

It just makes me glad that we got out when we did. Disappointing that the NCC won't be around any more, but the most important thing is that NDSU got out at the right time and has a long-term conference home for all of its sports with the exception of football (rather significant exception though).
