Of all the sports that I am most excited about for NDSU over the next few years, wrestling definitely stands out.

There are fewer and fewer teams each year due to Title 9.

NDSU has a program that is clearly competitive top 25 week in and week out in DI IMHO.

If we continue to recruit top grapplers in the Dakotas and Minnesota, while competing with Minnesota, Iowa and the Big 12 schools (that offer wrestling), we should be set.

The best thing about wresting is that one all-American can make your program for 4 years.

Coincidentally, NDSU signed three more wrestlers today.

gobison.com: Bison Ink Three (http://gobison.jumpinteractive.com/news/index.cgi?id=808)

So far I count five wrestlers, 3 men's basketball players, 5 women's basketball players, 2 women's tracksters, I've heard of a goalie for the soccer team (not on gobison.com yet though), and two baseball players. That is more people signing than I can ever remember before.

Had the same conversation with a SDSU alum at work today. More recruits, and recruits with Division I resume's.

IowaBison

I don't think the recruiting can all be attributable to NDSU going DI. I think recruiting has become much more formal in the last twenty years and as athletics has become big business, much more important.

There is a big difference from even last year though.

Looks like the NCAA may reduce the probation period for "olympic sports", wrestling track etc... which will be huge in recruiting as wrestlers and tracksters will be eligible for nationals two years from now

This seems to be a lot different than the dire predictions that local and regional student/athletes would be left out if NDSU went D1. I think its attracting more of them. I also agree with an earlier post that I read. NDSU moving to DI will in fact improve the skills of the local student/athletes because they will set their sights higher and achieve more.

Beat out Fresno State and Central Oklahoma, real wrestling schools!

(The following is included by stupidity.)

How did UND do? *That's right they don't have a team.

I get to see #3 Iowa at #4 Iowa State in about half an hour.

It will be exciting in a few years when a ranked NDSU has duals with these guys.

I'm a big wrestling fan and follow SDSU's program pretty close. I know this has been said before on this thread but both State U's can be top 25 immediately. Both North and South Dakota are full of D1 caliber wrestlers and now with our move to D1 we should be able to keep them away from the "Big 3" Iowa schools, Nebraska, and Minnesota. I would have loved to see Lincoln McIlravey (Phillip, SD) wrestle for the Jacks rather that the Hawkeyes a few years ago. There are many more guys, (not quite as good as him) but guys that can really help our programs, that will stay close to home so that mom and dad can finish up the farm chores early, and watch their son wrestle in Brookings or Fargo. (I can say that because I grew up milking cows).

IowaBison

You're absolutely right.

And it is tough to accept, college wrestling is becoming weaker each year due to Title 9. *If NDSU and/or SDSU make a major commitment to the sport they can be ranked week in and week out for eternity.

That sounds like a pretty good conference with a good mix of current good DI talent and adding some top DII schools.

Northern Iowa has always been a top 15 wrestling school and I think NDSU could jump right in there.

I still remember my freshmen year when Iowa with two Bismarck wrestlers came to Fargo to wrestle. I had never seen the BSA so packed to see the #1 wrestling team in the country matchup against the Bison. If I remember right, NDSU won two matches which I found amazing against the #1 team in the country.

On another note, this wrestling conference may open doors to play the teams in other sports. Wouldn't it be great to play at Wyoming or Air Force as a money game in football?

Bucky has said previously that he would like to get Minnesota back here for a dual. He prioritizes a Big 10 school to come here next year. If that falls through he has said he would go after a Big 8 school such as a Nebraska.

If any of you are at all interested in wrestling this should be a good weekend in Fargo. The Class A and B tournaments are in the Fargodome Thurs-Sat. The Bison go for their 17th NCC title on Friday night at 7:30 against No. 3-ranked Nebraska-Omaha. It should be the best dual of the year. The Bison beat them earlier this season 18-13.

Seeing as how this is the "official" wrestling thread, what are the odds of NDSU hosting the DI national tournament? Does it go out to bid? With all the positive responses of the ND highschool tourney and the cadets at the Fargodome, is there a chance the Fargodome could host?

Bison_Kent
03-01-2004, 10:08 PM
I think the FargoDome would be a great host site. The high school level wrestling championships in the summer are already there so the mat arrangements have already been set-up.

I am not sure it will happen. Past years host have been large cities such as Kansas City and St. Louis.

It would be a great host site for a regional championship though if the national championships won't be there.

somebison
03-01-2004, 10:35 PM
I beleive the UNI-Dome has also hosted the Nat Champs in wrestling. Cedar Falls-Waterloo is similar in size to FM and the Fargodome is actually bigger and newer than the UNI-Dome. One problem would be location however, most fans from Big 12/Big 10 schools (traditional DI powers) are able to drive to Iowa, while Fargo may be more of a stretch

IowaBison
03-01-2004, 11:07 PM
I think Fargo would have a little trouble hosting, its just not a tournament kind of town, we're not big, not an airline hub, not centrally located, don't have other attractions to offer. Would you rather play for a national championship in St. Louis or Fargo? Not a tough decision.

It's very close... Central Oklahoma isn't going away.

At 125, both teams are out.

At 133, Nick Magee and a Central Oklahoma wrestler are in opposite brackets.

At 141, Central Oklahoma has a wrestler opposite a Mankato one (go Mavericks!)

At 149, both teams are out.

At 157, Paul Carlson and a Central Oklahoma wrestler are in opposite brackets.

At 165, Mike Fielder is alive in the consolation bracket and Central Oklahoma has a wrestler in the championship bracker.

At 174, Thad Pike and a Central Oklahoma wrestler meet in the semis.

At 184, a Minn. State Moorhead wrestler, Ryan Kopiasz, knocked a Central Oklahoma wrestler in the consolation round and he meets NDSU's Matt Hermann in the semis.

At 197. Brian Kraemer is into the semifinals. I think Central Oklahoma has a guy in the consolations.

At heavyweight, Joe Bryce is into the semifinals and Central Oklahoma doesn't have a wrestler.

NDSU has 7 wrestlers still alive and Central OK has 6. You can't get much closer than that (NDSU currently has a 6.5 point lead).

We have a couple more wrestlers in the championship round and should see a little more seperation after Section III, as long as nothing 'surprising' happens.

NDSU,

Don't count out UNO. Too bad wrestler got DQ for a cold sore. What a bunch of crap. How many of UNO eight qualifiers are seniors. That would be 0. Next year d2 championship in Omaha. Be glad your going D1 Bison.

Here's my recap. *Simply NDSU did not wrestle well on Saturday. *They had 6 guys in the semis and only got 2 into the finals and won 0 individual titles. *That is not going to get it done. *I don't know what happened in Carlson's semi match as I got to Mankato about halfway into Pike's semi match. *He got taken down and put on his back early (therefore down 5 points) and couldn't come back. *If either of these guys had gotten to the finals we would have won. *NDSU was up 3.5 points on UNO going into the finals (by then UCO wasn't a factor). *UNO had three guys in the finals the first two lost, meaning if NDSU won at either 184 or 197 they would clinch the title. *At 184 Hermann was simply outmatched by a superior wrestler from Augie. *At 197 Kraemer looked good early getting two takedowns in the first period and looked like the better wrestler. *The paper said he hurt his knee in the first period, this may have been the case as he just didn't look the same in the second and third periods. *He got put on his back in the second period, fought hard to get out of it, and really couldn't do much after that. *The ending was anti-climatic as about 30 seconds into the match the Fort Hays wrestler (who was wrestling the 285 from UNO), messed up his knee or leg. *You could tell he wasn't going to be able to continue as he let out screams for the next few minutes. *That win gave UNO the title. *NDSU definetly had the largest cheering contingent (seconded by the combined cheers of whoever NDSU was wrestling plus UNO and UCO.) *the NDSU crowd was more vocal in the afternoon session, I think some fans may not have come to the finals because NDSU only had two wrestlers in the championship round.(or maybe they went to the women's BB game? ). *Also since the NDSU wrestlers were near the end of the session the fans may have had a tough time getting up. *Another factor may have been the 4 hour intermission between the morning session and the finals. * (I saw Taylor during the afternoon but not at night. *Did anyone see him at the WBB game?). *Anyways congrats to UNO they wrestled well but NDSU really lost this tournament. *I walked out of the arena feeling like NDSU had just lost to UND in football.

I saw Taylor Friday, but not Saturday night. Of course I may not have seen him in the hugh crowd at the CSP gym.

Sounds like the wrestling conference is about a done deal with NDSU, UNC, South Dakota State, Utah Valley State, Air Force, Eastern Illinois, Fresno State, UNI and Wyoming set to join.

Bucky was on WDAY TV tonight at 6:00 and a conference call to get through the details is expected next week.

I believe one hook-up was with UNI, EIU, and Fresno State with the regional tournaments to get to the nationals.

Wasn't there originally supposed to be some Ohio schools in the conference?
