Thursday, Feb. 10 @ 7:30 in the BSA! Bucky & Co. take on the 13th ranked University of Northern Iowa Panthers! This should be a great match. It will be the stiffest test the Bison have all year. If you have never been to a match at the BSA, you have to come check this one out. You know that ol'buck won't let his boys lay down. It will be a dog fight! I am bringing a car load of young wrestlers with me just to show them what the best wrestling in the country looks like!

You might also want to show them Oklahoma State.

The good old days are back: Bison vs Panthers in wrestling!

Make that Iowa State, you can't always trust rankings. (okay, maybe I'm a little biased)

Didn't the Pokes just manhandle our Cyclowns a few weeks back? ;)

I'm still in denial

(but no, didn't manhandle us, it was 21-14)

Iowa State is very good too.

Didn't they have an upper weight that won 4 DI titles?

IowaBison

hell, even better

Cael was undefeated in college, even Gable didn't that

and then won a gold medal this summer in Athens

(not a heavy weight though)

Cael Sanderson. Never lost a match in college and won the Olympic gold this past summer.

IE the best wrestler in the world at his weight class?

Did he wrestle free or greco in the olympics?

Freestyle

I missed the gold medal match, cause I had to tailgate or something.

Looked like the boys had a tough time on the mat on last night.

I especially liked this quote from Bucky:
"We have a lot of recruiting to do and lot of weeding out."

Never one to mince words.

It turned out better than I though it was going to.

The pins hurt pretty bad, but every victory was that much better.

Good crowd too (1000+).

I'm pretty optimistic about our future. 2-3 years from now and will should be even money with the Panthers (and the Hawkeyes if they continue to SUCK!)

Seeing how we're relatively close to a wrestling hotbed, we shouldn't have problems finding good wrestlers.

I might even go as far as to say that MN is probably one of the top 5 toughest state tournaments to win at any class.

There's tons and tons of excellent wrestling talent from Minnesota. Obviously we'll need to tap into it more than we previously have.

Which is ironic, because my old high school (of 1,400 students) was, and still is, the only public high school in the Twin Cities area to not have a wrestling program.

With title ix killing wrestling programs left and right, there are number of wrestlers who will come to NDSU without scholarship in hand just stay involved with the sport.

Don't let the 31-12 score fool you. Bucky has some of his best people red shirting this year. ;D

Edina doesn't either. They coop with Richfield.

My high school didn't co-op with anyone. There was NO wrestling opportunity there. If you went there and you wanted to wrestle, you were SOL.

UNI mauled the Jackrabbits 34-3.

Proof positive that it could have been worse for NDSU. ;D

You would think they'd coop with cooper or someone.

Nice interview with Bucky on the WDAY 6:00 sports tonight. He seems rather optimistic about the future- wrestlers are signing with NDSU that would not have in the past because of being DI - sounds like there will be some good teams making their way into the BSA next year. ;D

one positive effect of title ix is that ndsu can get world class wrestlers without providing full (or even partial scholarships)

these guys just want to wrestle

What a great year for Bucky, even with the UNI loss that probably really got his juices flowing. I bet he just loves this chance at DI and can't wait to hit the recruiting trail.

By the way, does anyone know how long ago und2 dropped wrestling? Was it a funding issue or title 9?

Keep on em Buc.

Funding, Title IX, and a lack of success.

I think it was in the mid to late 90's. I knew a guy who walked on there and he graduated from high school in 93, so it obviously had to be sometime after that.

I believe UND's last year of wrestling was 1998. Chris Zink wrestled for the Sioux until the program was dropped and then transferred to NDSU for his senior season in 1999.
