SOOOO....I am kind of new to the wrestling aspect of DI and wanted to see if anybody knew how the post season went. What teams make it to the regionals?

You place individual wrestlers and the team whose wrestlers had the most points scored is the "team" national champion.

But there aren't actual dual matches between teams in a playoff that I know of.

They do that in MN high school. I mean, they have both a team dual championship and a individual championship.

I think it's correct to have only the individual championship as wrestling is an individual sport.

I'll go out on a limb and say you've never been on a wrestling TEAM, have you?

If you were, was it any good?

NDHSAA has both Dual and Individual championships as well now. Reading about the VA duals tournament that the Bison just competed in it appears that the concept of a team dual tournament originated in VA high school wrestling.

There is an unofficial National Dual Tournament sponsored by the National Wrestling Coaches Association @ UNI this year and last year and will be there again in '08 and '09. It was this weekend as well (at some point in the past these two tournaments were held in conjunction with each other). Apparently the National Duals have been around for a while and have been held at numerous locations in Iowa, Ohio, and Pennslyvania as well as Nebraska, Michigan and Virginia.

A huge dual tournament covering all levels of collegiate wrestling DI, II, III, NAIA, and club. This year the DI tournament featured 9 of the top 10 teams in the country, Penn St was at the VA Duals. MN just won the title over #1 ranked Missouri. For the second year in a row their heavyweight recorded a pin in the last match of the championship to secure a victory for the Gophers. Team tactics were on display in this match as Missouri shuffled their line up, requiring several wrestlers to wrestle up a weight class in an attempt to optimize matchups.

So are we eligible this year for a tournament?

Yes, wrestlers are eligible for national championships this year.

Pac 10, WWC ... anyone else?

It almost worked.

Unfortunately for Missouri, Conrad is one of the best HWs of all time.

The Western Regional consists of NDSU, SDSU, University of Wyoming, University of Norther Iowa, UNC, Eastern Illiniois, and Air Force Academy. The Region is consistently won by Northern Iowa who is almost always ranked in the top 25. Hopefully the Bison can send a few guys to Nationals. Guys who have an outside shot are Hoffman 125, Sanders 133, Wetterling 184 and maresh at HWT if he decides to wrestle. The champs at each weight get an automatic bid and then the coaches decide on the 11 wildcards for a total of 21 wrestlers going to the Nationals in Detroit. It is very important that the NDSU wrestlers win all their individual matches so they can get a good seed going into the Regional tournament. Would be awesome to get 4 guys to the National Tournament but I do not see any of them placing besides maybe Hoffman.

So the PAC 10 isn't in the West Regional?

According to the NCAA website there are 2 regional tournaments, East and West. I'd think every school would have to go to one of those tournaments.

I thought Wetterling has killed everyone he faced except the SDSU kid. What happened at that match? Was he hurt or sick?

That makes sense! Just like ND wrestling right? EDC then you qualify for state.

Does anyone know which tournaments automatically place the top wrestlers in the national tournament?

I saw somewhere that the WWC eventually wants the conference tournament to replace the western regional.

So I have to assume that big time conference tournaments Pac 10, Big 10, Big 12 auto place their top guys.

Qualifiying Meets from the NCAA 2007 Division I Wrestling Champoinships Handbook. (you can google it)

14 ACC
72 Big 10
38 Big 12
23 Colonial Athletic Association
47 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association
32 Eastern Wrestling League
19 Mid-American Conference
39 PAC-10
14 Southern Conference
11 East Regional
21 West Regional

Each qualifying tournament places the number of wrestlers indicated above.
The champion in each of the 10 weight classes from each qualifier gets in automatically.
The West regional has 21 slots so the 10 champions will get in then the coaches will decide how to allocated the remaining 11 slots prior to the regional. 1) All 2nd place finishers qualify plus 1 wild card who could finish no worse than 5th in this class at the regional. 2) 11 wild card finishers from all individuals placing 4th or better in their class at the regional.

The Big 10 can place everyone finishing 7th or better plus 2 wild cards who finished 10th or better, or everyone finishing 6th or better plus 12 wild cards who finished 9th or better.

Confused yet? Me to. It seems like you could end up with as few as 21 wrestlers in a weight class or as many as 52.

Whos hosting the WEST REGIONAL?

bisonaudit
02-17-2007, 08:44 PM
Northern Iowa is hosting the West Regional.

Qualifiying tournaments are allocated positions based on a combination of factors. Primarily top 12 finishes from the prior year but also the size of the qualifying tournament, and performance trends over the last 5 years. The minimum number of entrants for a qualifying tournament is 11. Allowing for transfers of teams from one qualifier to another no qualifier gains or loses more than 3 slots per year. No qualifying tournament can place more than 65% of its participants in the national tournament. Additional discretionary factors include: equitable regional representation, one and five year average team points at the national event, one and five year winning percentages at the national tournament, and the addition or subtraction of teams from a qualifying tournament.

I've never been. Attended the ND state tournament all the time when I was in school and made it to a fair number of NDSU home duals. I guess I just get a little geeked up about how they actually run the events. I remember an especially close B team title race probably 12 years ago or more. Sitting in the upper deck at the Minot Dome furiously doing math all through the semi finals, 5th and 3rd place matches trying to figure out who needed what to win. If I remember correctly Carrington ended up winning what I believe still is the closest state tournament in history, but they needed a blow out in one final and an upset in another to get it done.

I wrestled for cgtn in 1989-91 and I think you might be referring to the 1990 state tourney. We ended up in third 1 and 1/2 points behind napoleon and 1/2 point behind the second place team-waiting for the results in the finals to see who won.

If I remember right, about four years later, it was about the same where a upset in the heavyweight match gave carrington the title.

Hoffman just dropped his opener at 125 (2-0) to the 8 seed.

Only saw the match summary on the NCAA page but it looks like classic tournament wrestling. Takedown at the end of period 1. Hoffman couldn't escape in the 2nd and couldn't roll the guy in the 3rd.

Faces an unranked opponent from Kent State in his next match.
