Congrats to the soccer team!. This is at the Tulane tournament. I believe next up is Alabama at the same tournament. Outstanding. You would like to the know what these bigger schools thoughts are when they hear some relatively unknown, new team in DI, called NDSU beat an established DI team in the first round.

Northern Iowa is an important landmark victory against a respectable regional team NDSU will be playing year-in and year-out.

To temper our enthusiasm, though, it's important to note that Northern Iowa has only won one game this season (young as it is), and finished the season 2-16-2 last year. I'm glad the Bison beat UNI decisively. Anything less would have been discouraging.

The UNI victory this year was against Minnesota State (that would be Mankato).
I don't know anything about Minnesota State's DII strength.

Here's a telling quote from the UNI soccer page:

The last time the Panthers scored more than four goals was against Morningside Aug. 31, 2000.

Bison beat Drake 1-0 in OT today, a quote from the Drake Coach

“From start to finish we were the better team,” said Drake head coach Corbin Stone. “We played better soccer, we got better chances, but in the end we failed to capitalize. To be fair, their goalkeeper was absolutely outstanding, making some key saves. But still, we could have done better with the opportunities we were given.”

How can they say they had 21 shots on goal if all the NDSU goalie had was 5 saves? Seems to me they would have scored 16 goals if all 21 shots were on goal. I guess a defense player could have blocked the shot but then I still wouldn't consider it a shot on goal. You have to like a coach that respects the team that just beat him in the post game interview.

There is a difference between shots and shots on goal in soccer, everytime a player shoots whether it goes over/around the goal etc, its is a shot. When the goalie actually makes a save, it is considered a shot on goal

So it sounds like Drake just wildly kicked the ball towards NDSU's end and claimed to have outplayed the Bison by kicking more balls out the end of the field. Is that right?

Let's look at shots on goal 5 vs. 5. That Drake coach lacks a little thing called professionalism, but who wouldn't be frustrated. They went from Missouri Valley Conference champs to 0-5. Congrats to the Bison...Drake sounds like sore losers!

Soccer continues impressive play with 2-0 shutout over Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Coach Cuadrado said it was a good win as W-GB beat the Bison handily last year.

Incidentally, W-GB beat SDSU 3-0 Sat. and took then #20 Marquette to a 1-1 tie earlier this month.

Maybe the Bison Soccer team is not that far from being able to compete with anyone.

why did we pick volleyball to be eligible early again?

mikelsch
10-24-2005, 10:54 PM
Bison Goalie Karli Kopietz (Junior) ranks 10th nationally in save percentage -- 89% and 12th nationally in shutouts -- 10. For those of that didn't see her play this year, she is very, very good. She came to us from the U of M. She started 29 games for them in the midst of tearing an ACL.

Also, the team's two highest scorers are a freshman (Jestina Orlando) and a soph (Michelle Martinez). This team is losing 6 seniors which all played significant roles in this successful season. Look for coach Cuadrado to bring in more top recruits to fit his successful system of speedy attackers, and ball-hawking, aggressive defenders.

NDSU soccer will challenge for a conference championship and NCAA playoff berth when eligible in the 2008 season.

why did we pick volleyball to be eligible early again?

Because volleyball had a better track record for success in division II and I also believe volleyball has a better tournament and more money. I could be wrong but that would be a good reason.

Mid-Con in 2008 (prediction). Independent tourney next season.

Volleyball probably needed the shortened probation more than soccer. Volleyball traditionally had the potential to generate ticket sales, and is more well-known (tradition, past success) at NDSU. Volleyball can use the postseason carrot to now recruit better athletes, as long as Bina knows how to find/coach them. Soccer is already finding success, despite having 2 extra years of probation.

Greenie,
Using your logic!
1. charge addmissions at Soccer games, it looks like the crowds are getting bigger anyways
2. imagine the potential of adding "the postseason carrot to now recruit better athletes" to the soccer staff
3. delete from your quote "as long as Bina knows how to find/coach them" because they are eligable next year?
4. if soccer is already having succes, despite the wait. Imagine how much better if they didn't have to wait, isn't that the point who is winning now!

mikelsch

You got me all wrong...

I totally agree that soccer is farther ahead than volleyball right now (coaching, talent, etc) and I wish they were the ones post-season eligible next season. My previous post was a guestimate why administration chose volleyball instead. I bet they would like to change their decision. However, volleyball needs all the help they can get right now.

So if they are in a conference and no one else is, soccer would only have to win this conference to get a bid to the NCAA Tournament if they had been the chosen sport? Am I correct on that? The conference doesn't seem that tough to win as well.
