Bison and Gophers will square off next season in the BSA. THis has been a tumultuous Spring for the GO-GO GOphers. Six players graduated the program including starters/parttime starters Shannon Schonrock, Shannon Bolden, and April Calhoun. Additionally, five players transferred including the entire post rotation of Nat Williams, Jamie Broback, Lauren Lacey, and Liz Podominick leaving the Gophs with only one player taller than 6-0. The only experienced players returning are guards Kelly Roysland and Emily Fox. Three other players return to the team.

Borton has added a highly touted frosh recruiting class featuring F Corrine Campbell, W Breanna Salley and G Brittany McCoy. Additionally, the Gophers have brought in a F from Canada, Tanisha Smith, and G Jordan Barnes, out of Minnetonka who played one year at Winthrop before becoming a student for the past year at the U.

Obviously, watching this makeshift team will be interesting. At the SU/UM game this year in Minneapolis, Broback was the only player who stepped up to stave off the Bison in a close win.

WHY DID ALL THOSE PLAYERS AT THE U LEAVE?

Borton is a total control freak. The players were frustrated with her trying to control everything in their lives. They just went through the motion the past 2 months of the season. Players had a countdown of how many days left they had. I got this info from a former member of the team last weekend. Pam won't stay around long with that reputation, it's only a matter of time before she turns the U into as the world turns just like Littlejohn did. That's good news for the Bison they dominated recruiting Minnesota when she was the coach.

Broback's departure was perhaps the least surprising despite what she meant to last year's team. She was out at the beginning of the year taking care of personal issues and she was benched for large portions of the season finale against Washington. Definite signs of discontentment.

Podominick is focusing on field events. She has a good chance of being on the Olympics team in the not too distant future.

Williams, Lacey, and Davis were all out of state kids, far from home who may have needed little prompting to leave. Williams father, however, was the most verbal about Borton's treatment of players.

Additionally, a popular assistant coach was removed from the team.

UM reconfirmed their faith in Borton, which at this juncture, may have been a good thing. It has solidified her position in the short term but also put her on notice to straighten things up. If more student athletes leave, the U might take a closer look at Borton.

As it is, the Gophers will have a formidible 1-2 guard system with Emily Fox (who came on fantastically as the year wore on) and Kelly Roysland. Not much depth beyond those two, however.

Regarding recruiting...here's an interesting blog I came accross that high lights top Minnesota players and contains links to local AAU sites. Kind of fun to browse around.

The Gophers also have Ashley Ellis-Milan & Katie Ohm coming off redshirt years.

Ohm is of course Minnesota’s all-time leading high school scorer, boys or girls, with 3,694 career points, and 2005 Associated Press Player of the Year.

Ellis-Milan earned 2005 Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year honors and 2005 Associated Press All-State First Team.

The personnel that Gophers have are good...just inexperienced. Our matchup with them should be pretty good. Roysland/Fox will be their backcourt and it will be fun to see them matchup against Bue/Dahlen.Giordat and whoever else we put in. I think we have an advantage down low as Sonstelie had a great offensive game last time out. She and Dani should have an advantage with their familiarity with one another.

Brenda Slyt was a trooper against the Gophers last year putting up 17 points.

And just watch, with the NDSU tradition, and future teams, some of these athletes will come to NDSU also.

Everyone has to keep in mind that NDSU is growing in recognition in ALL aspects of a school.

It was unbelieveable to me watching the 2005 Gopher roster implode. They had the personnel at MN to be a dominant team at the top of the ncaa over the next 2-3 years if they could've kept it together. That has to be a big disappointment for the AD in MN looking at what could have been. Their top 3-4 big people were really good.

It will be interesting to see how well and how quickly the Gopher women reload. Don't think for a minute that the Bison will have the edge and an easy time in 2006. Last year's game with the Gophers was a great effort by the Bison combined with the beginning of the Gopher crash. Let's hope that the Bison recruiting will lift our team in 2006.

Future Gopher report.....Gophers get a 2007 commit from a 6'4" post out of Indiana who was looking at Purdue, Iowa and NC State and they reieve a 2008 verbal from a local kid out of St. Paul Central, Kyria Burford.

If Borton can keep pulling in some talent like this, and retain them, she may withstand this past season's defections.

If she can retain these players . What do you think the future is for her.

Expectations for the Gophers aren't very high this year, so if Borton can do well against some of the top teams and "show promise" I think fans will support her much along the lines of how the Minnesota Athletic Director is supporitng her. Definitely getting Dockery and Buford in helps keep the ong distance picture sunny.

Good article in the Forum about Roysland being the lone Sr on the Gophers.

Gophers Rebuilding Link (http://www.in-forum.com/Sports/articles/136701)

The way she shakes her head and sets the gaze of her green eyes out the nearest window confirms it: To this day, the rumors, a tangled mess that began on the Internet, still bother Kelly Roysland.

She had no intention of leaving the University of Minnesota before the 2005-06 season and certainly not after it, even though her minutes decreased (slightly) again and even though five teammates left after last season.
