Lady Comets Sign Division I Transfer, Ali Sonstelie

Mayville State University women’s basketball coach Dennis Hutter has announced that Ali Sonstelie signed a Dakota Athletic Conference letter of intent to play basketball at Mayville State. A 6’1” forward from Winger, Minn., she plans to major in history education at Mayville State.
Sonstelie comes to the Comets from North Dakota State University, where she has been a member of the Bison women’s basketball team for the past three seasons. She has two years of eligibility remaining. Sonstelie red-shirted in her first year at North Dakota State University, then played in all 26 games for the Bison in her freshman season.
As a college freshman, Sonstelie averaged 6.9 points per game, 3.8 rebounds per game, and 1.8 assists per game. She was named to the Ball State Credit Union Classic all-tournament team for a performance that included a season-high 17 points against the host Cardinals in the championship game. She connected on 9 of 10 free throw attempts against Ball State (11-27-05) and hit 13 of 14 free throws in the tourney.
In addition Ali earned Division I Independent Newcomer of the Week honors, had five games scoring in double-figures, and nailed 3 of 3 three-point attempts against Minnesota-Duluth in December of 2005. In that same season, she pulled down a season-best nine rebounds in a game versus Central State. She dished out five assists and came up with three steals in games against Utah Valley State. She had five assists in game against Idaho State and Minnesota-Duluth, as well.
During her sophomore season, Sonstelie played in 21 games for the Bison averaging 3.1 points per game and 1.8 rebounds per game.
“We are ecstatic about Ali’s decision to continue her basketball career at Mayville State,” said Coach Hutter. “She has great size and athleticism and should create major mismatch problems, both inside and outside, for our opponents.”
Sonstelie attended Sacred Heart High School in East Grand Forks, Minn., where she scored an impressive 1,687 career points. Ali averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds her high school senior season.
