Sorry, but that last topic got me thinking and I was wondering if anyone has played the new course in Medora or the one down by the casino?

I heard the one at Medora is great and pretty difficult, but haven't heard anything on the course by the casino. I'm a big fan of Hawktree in Bismarck and Wildflower @ Pelican Lake. Bemidji CC is another great one.

Anyone have any input on the other one's around?

One hidden gem I know of is the golf course at Fertile MN. I can't remember the name but it is immaculate.

I am still a big fan of the Detroit Country Club, and of course Edgewood.

Yeah, I've played Fertile a few times, a little known fact about that course, the people built it all on their own, with their own tractors and what not. *That course has one of my favorite holes I've played, no. 4 I think. *Tee off on a cliff about 200 feet up, down to a straight fairway with a clump of trees in the middle. *Very nice course though, always in good condition. *I heard they may expand to 18 sometime in the future too, anyone know anything?

Detroit CC is nice but I would rather make the drive to Wildflower. We usually sneak on to Det. CC later as we are on Lake Melissa then head straight to the Hotel for some late nights!

Yeah that tee off is awesome. There is the river on one side of the fairway and if I remember right a big hill with trees on the other. I heard that story about the farmers coming it with tractors, pretty cool. I don't think they will be expanding it to 18 in the near future. The just paved the cart path and are trying to pay for that.

I usually golf over at Rose Creek or Village Green but my favorite courses are

1. Oxbow
2. Wildflower
3. Thumper Pond(Course next Otter Tail Lake that is built in a tree farm).
4. Meadows
5. Edgewood

I think that I played Thumper Pond but can't remember it that well?? Have you played near Walker, MN at all? They have some nice courses there.

Yep, I think that's it. I'm surprised more golfers in Fargo don't know about it. It puts Edgewood to shame IMO.

It's better that more people don't. They had a story about it in the GFH one year and that weekend everyone flooded out there. I like it when there are little gems that people don't know about so you can play when you want and the price is right. That's why I was kind of hoping someone might bring a course to light on this board that is worth checking out. Then hopefully McFeely and his chronies don't see it here and talk about it on their golf show!

I have never golfed near Walker. I want to try some of those courses out by Brainard, looking at their websites those courses look amazing. But they are also amazingly expensive compared to golf in Fargo.

I don't know of many courses in the area that are under the radar though. Hawley has nice course that usually isn't to busy. It probably has one of best looking and toughest par 3's in the area.

True that. I never get out that way but isn't there a really nice course out by williston as well?? I have also heard a lot of people going out to Leonard. It's fairly close to fargo but I haven't heard how nice it is.

Red Mike is near Williston, played it years back when it originally opened. Nice course, links style course with no trees and long fescue like King's Walk in GF. was pretty tough, wouldn't make a trip out of the way to play it though, I go to Williston every year or so, so that is why I played it.

The best hidden gem in Grand Forks County....The Larimore Public Golf Course.

Sioux_Yeah_Yeah
04-21-2005, 08:00 PM
Yeah, Larimore's not much of a "hidden" gem though. Place is packed usually. Still a great place to play. Would rather drive the extra 15 minutes and play Fertile any day if I was going to play a 9 hole course.

Being from Williston I have played The Links of North Dakota (Red Mike) many times and would have to sy that it the best golf in NW North Dakota. I am planning on trying the new one in Medora this summer. I hear that is a hell of a course.

You like it huh, I'm not a real big fan.

I just looked up the course in Medora (Bully Pulpit) and it looks great. My buddy just called and said his dad drove out there and played it and said that it was awesome, the best in the state. It sure looks nice although the site doesn't offer much and internet never does courses justice.

Wyo, I used to play the Williston CC all the time when we were there, not real nice but always fun to play. Have you ever played the Burlington course?

I played Bulley Pulpit twice last year, and it is by far the best place to golf I have ever seen. The scenery is completely spectacular, and the the course was in great condition even during their their first few weeks of being open. It is close to Hawktree, in Bismarck, for pristine condition, but it has a very friendly atmosphere. They were building what looks to be an outstanding clubhouse while we were there. Everyone should take a trip there as it is definetly worth the trip. I plan on golfing it again this year when I go to the Badlands Bowl in June at Dickinson. Red Mike resort near Ray, ND is very good but the course has had a few washed out areas the couple of times I played there, still it's top 3 or 4 in the state.

I heard last year they had a weekend promotion where you could play all 3 for $100 which is great deal for the golf, but not the $100 in gas you'd have to spend getting to all three.

Being from Williston myself, I must say that Red Mike is a fun course and the best in the area (of course, the local compitition is usually local CC's and muni's which lack the finer touches of challenging courses)...

I liked Thumper Pond (except for the half dozen balls I lost in the trees), and Edgewood...I am looking forward to running through the Bully Pulpit course this summer.

THE WORST course by far is a little known "course" near Blacktail Dam recreation area in NW NoDak featuring mowed clump grass as fairways and gravel greens. The biggest hazards are the gopher holes throughout the course. But when you are 10 and with the grandparents, it was fun! :)

Are there any sand green courses left in ND?

scottheck
04-22-2005, 01:41 PM
EPA regulations have forced many of them to convert. Kulm was one of the last sand green courses. About to 10 years ago they converted to artificial greens.
Since it's my home town, I'm allowed to say it's a pasture. Only play it when I'm home because it's there.

Red Mike has gone downhill alot since it started. It used to have that expensive silica sand in all its bunkers, but then one winter they didn't stake the tarps down well enough and just about every one of them blew off and there went the sand. Now its beach sand. >:( I know in the past, the Links of ND has been given very high ratings by Golf Digest, but not lately.

The Muni is not that great, and all of the hacks go there so I tend to steer clear of there. Eagle Ridge as it is called now, (formerly the CC) is nice, but I usually play at Red Mike.

If you count Black-tail. They have a very small sand green course. Not really sure if you would call if a golf course though.

I do have to say I have not played at Red Mike in about 6 years, so it very well may have gone down hill. As to playing in Burlington.....if you mean the Minot CC, then yes, I have played there......very nice course.

By the way.....what are the green fees at Bully Pulpit? This summer I want to take the family to Medora......go to the musical and play a round of golf there......

I just googled "Bully Pulpit golf" for the fees but the site seems to be pretty old and I'm not sure if the fees have changed or not since then.

I know there is a sand-green course between Minot and Devil's Lake, but I can't think of what town it is in. I stopped and played 3 or 4 holes there one day and it was pretty interesting. If you have not played a sand course you should stop and play a few holes as they will not be around for very long.

I have to ask again, has anyone played or heard about the course down by Dakota Magic?

I have not played it but I have heard the Grand Rapids (near LaMoure) Golf Course is one of the state's best.

I might have to bring my clubs (I have started playing golf after moving to Kansas) the next time I am visiting my folks.

Here is a link for the golf course. They have package deals available for golf, musical, etc. I have not played the course yet but friends have told me it is just as good or better than Hawktree in Bismarck.

I doubt Bully Pulpit has changed any of it's prices because it just opened up. Although you may pay $60 or so for 18 and a cart, it's much less than you would pay at any of the top Brainard lakes courses, or big resorts anywhere. Last year we did the punch card for all three courses, Hawktree, Red Mike, and Bully Pulpit, which saved us money.

Sorry to disappoint you Kent, but I grew up about 20 minutes from Grand Rapids, and I can say that while they normally are the first course in ND to open, they are nowhere near the best. It's no different than the typical muni, and it's nowhere near as difficult as even most muni's. It is kind of pretty and unique (being like the course in Fertile, lots of farm help), but the last few times I have played the course it was not in great shape. Another thing is that it typically is at least $5 more expensive per 9 holes than other courses in the area, and is also in the absolute middle of nowhere!!! (10 miles from Lamoure, just outside of a town of 30)

I agree. It does usually open early. It is one of the better in that area as there is a very limited selection. Jamestown CC is the nearest good course. When given the choice between Edgeley, Kulm, Lamoure, or GR, GR is the tops. But it is really is just another muni quality course.

There used to be a nice course at Glenwood MN. Peter's Resort, Pezekee sp?

I also liked Ponderosa, more for the nice walk in the woods.

Hawley wasn't real challenging, but it was cheap and fun.
