When I come up to Fargo for Bison games, I still look forward to eating at the Speak Easy. Still one of my favorites over the years.

I go there while I am in college and when I am gone I know The Turf will be a place I return to every time.

No other bar food can beat a 32oz beer ($3) and a Turf Burger.

A true Bison Fan/Alumn should make a pilgrimage to the Turf or Chubs on trips to Fargo.

There are no restaurants with any imagination whatsoever.

Gaudalajara is now a Buffalo Wild Wings.

Doolittle's is great. I've always enjoyed the Cork and Cleaver. Gecko's has good food as well as Granite City. Lauerman's 2 used to have good grub, but they've gone downhill lately. Food at Space Aliens is definitely good stuff, however it has a Chuckee Cheese like atmosphere. When in doubt...Famous Daves.

Downtown's the place to be if you want a nice meal:

Monte's (I've seen Bohl there a few times)
PD's on First (best steaks in town)
Unnamed Restaurant

Haven't been there myself, but some of my friends that really like sushi say that the Yuki Hana is better than anything in Minneapolis. The sushi chefs there used to train chefs for new restaurants all over the country, and then decided to open up their own restaurant in little 'ol Fargo.

OCBison,
No imagination? I'd put Monte's, PD's or the Unnamed Restaurant at the HoDo up against any of the $80-100/plate restaurants in Napa as far as cuisine. The Fargo restaurants would hold their own for about one-third the price.

as far as bar food goes there is no question that the turf is head and shoulders above.

if ya want a little variety and some class i would highly recommend monte's downtown, the hotel donaldson isnt too bad, not quite as classy and a little more expensive. Littlefields over in west fargo is nice also.

Yukihana's in south fargo on 25th is an excellent sushi/korean restaurant.

As far as all you can eat the Hu Hot mongolian grill and the King House buffet (chinese) are can't miss.

It's at the Hotel Donaldson. They have a Flash website, so I can't link directly to the restaurant page- http://www.hoteldonaldson.com/main.html . Looks like it's actually called the HoDo Restaurant now. I'm sure the Unnamed restaurant was confusing people.

Along the lines of Littlefield's or Monte's.

Chi Chi's @ Westacres, is that still around?

Actually there is some confusion. The old Chi Chi's is now the BW3's.

What is now Gecko's used to be Guadalajara's which used to be an American Country Buffet.

Before Guadalajara's moved into the American Country Buffet building they were in the old Happy Chef building across from Perkins which is now Acupalco (which is very good Mexican Food).

Granite City is probably my all around favorite place to eat.

The Red Bear is pretty good with a nice atmosphere. Ate in the bar as there was a three hour wait (when they first opened!)

I think the best pizza and beer selection is at Old Chicago. We eat there almost every time we get through town.

When alone, I do try and make it to Chubs and the Turf, not only for the food, but also for the memories (or the blurry versions of memories ;)

I also have heard that the Northern has a good buffet-any truth to that??

Red Bear in Moorhead is great! Last time I was there (in late February) it was dead quiet on Sunday around noon and I couldn't believe it. Asked the manager why and he said something like he expected more people later and they had stopped having a Sunday buffet. Also, a significant menu change was in the works. Hopefully this did not negatively affect its popularity.

I haven't been there in a few years (since I had my cholesterol checked :-/), but Rick's used to have the best burger in town, the Spike Burger= half pound patty, slab of ham, bacon, couple different kinds of cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and about a cup of mayonnaise on a bun.

You would have to compress it to about one-third the original thickness to be able to take a bite.

Last night I was at Chub's and Teddy pointed me to Swanson's article in the Spectrum. I couldn't agree more that this is definitely one of the top 10 reasons to go to NDSU...but the wording...where had I seen that before....

1) The Turf and Chubs. Most people call themselves a Turf person or a Chubs person. I love them both equally! Choosing between the two is like choosing which one of your kids you love more. The Turf and Chubs are as much a part of NDSU as the Union or Minard Hall. In fact, I’m guessing many spent more time there than they did in class. How can you not love the Turf and Chubs? Mug night, Teddy, pitcher night, Wade, 75 cent draws, Kelsey and Jan (my two favorite bartenders of all time), Turf Burgers, etc. A place where everybody knows your name.

No Chipotle in the FM area. *The closet you can come is Qdoba out by Home Depot, next to the HuHot Mongolian Grill.

Oh sorry, I thought they opened a Chipotle in Moorhead. Well, I got the free deal so I'm happy.

jjbluecrew,

Being a born and raised West Fargo Native I think its out here in West Fargo, not Down here in West Fargo. *Its a distinction only a local would note. * :D

Head over to the Silver Dollar Bar and tell them Ed Hongess sent you for the big drink special!

JBB

how can you be from down in WF if Smokey's isn't on the list...i hear the line is much shorter these days. RIP Obed

Did there used to be a place called The Red Farmer or something like that out by West Acres?

There is a Fabitos (make your own Burrittos) in Dilworth that I heard is like Juano's/Qdoba/Chipotle. One guy said it was pretty good.

Hey Sioux_Yeah_Yeah

I grew up with the Whirl-a-Whip. My whole family stopped @ Stanley @ the end of June. The old old machine, the one with enamel is gone, but the "new" one (1950's) is stainless steel and still cranks out ultra-smooth ice cream. My 4 year old and I had a blueberry and black licorice combo. Excellent. We are the only 2 out of 6 in our family that like black licorice.

I remember when they cost 75 cents, now they are close to 3 bucks.

YES. Black licorice used to be my favorite. Then I changed to butterfinger, now I'm stuck on mint. I love how they still crush up the actual candy in front of you like the good 'ol days.

I bet your 4 year old loved the spinning stools too!

Man I wish there were direct flights from Chicago to Stanley!

Have you heard about this gourmet sandwich place called Jimmy John's?? They have one in Grand Forks, and I went there the last time I was up there two years ago when it first opened. They had some good stuff there. But unfortunately they never opened one in Fargo. Why the hell didn't they do that?? Seriously, there should NEVER be any kind of restaurant, attraction or hotel Grand Forks has that Fargo doesn't have. It should be a freakin' rule.

I think if I had any money (or desire) to do this, I would open a Jimmy John's near NDSU campus. The Jimmy John's in Champaign-Urbana deliver too. Really good stuff, although really similar to Cousin's Subs.

Fargo needs a Dunkin Donuts too.

Pizza Patrol is what I miss the most. Ordered it 3 nights in a row when I was in Fargo in May.

Speaking of doughnuts (Your take on Dunkin' Donuts reminded me), if there's ANYTHING I want to see in Fargo more than anything else, it's a Tim Horton's. I have to drive 215 miles up to Winnipeg just to get their awesome C$2.00 Timbits boxes and famous Canadian crack-saturated coffee. If I'm not mistaken, Wendy's has a partnership with Tim Horton's, in which they build lots of dual restaurants for both franchises (in one building) across Canada. Now, there's only two Wendy's in Fargo (both on the south side). Maybe they could open up a third Wendy's/Tim Horton's on 19th Avenue North near campus. I bet that Timmy's would make a freakin' FORTUNE from their coffee sales alone during Finals Weeks.

BTW, here's a list of restaurants/food places I would really like to see open in Fargo before the end of the decade is out:

Fast Food

***SBARRO!!!!!***
Panera Bread
Jimmy John's
Bruegger's Bagels
Chipotle
Tim Horton's
Leeann Chin
Noodles & Company
Boston Market

Sit-down Places

Don Pablo's
Joe's Crab Shack
Benihana
The Cheesecake Factory
P.F. Chang's
California Pizza Kitchen

That's all I can think of now.

Jimmy Johns is pretty good. We have two in Springfield, Missouri. They normally throw your sandwich at you before you finish your order.

I am a regular at the Jimmy Johns in Golden Valley. Fast service is their motto. It replaced Subway on my lunch places list.

There used to be a Wendys/Tim Hortons in Hopkins but the Hortons side is boarded up although Wendys is going strong.

Teammaker breakfast at the Iron Skillet PETRO TRUCK STOP. Saturdays at 10 am . Breakfast buffet is very good. Stop by and solve all the NDSU athletic problems. Road Warrior stops by during the fall and winter.

I'm not much of a Jimmy John's guy but Potbelly's, now there is a sandwhich place. I know there are a few in Minny, we have a bunch in Chicago, not sure if there are any in ND now. Good stuff though.

Ruby Tuesdays is pretty good for one of the franchise types of restaurants. Good burgers and frigid salad bar.

Anyone hear anything new about restaurants going in by the new hotel at NDSU? I'd like some new places to eat on the northside.
