UND and North Dakota State University in Fargo have a chunk of change attached to a controversial defense spending bill now working its way through Congress.
The U.S. House passed the legislation Monday that would allocate about $38 million to defense-related research at UND and NDSU.
It also contains money to maintain a full inventory of B-52 bombers at Minot Air Force Base.
Slow-moving bill
The final version of the $453 billion must-pass bill was supposed to be voted on last week, but it's been slowed some by lawmakers' reservations over an attachment that allows oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.
The bulk of the research money coming to North Dakota will go to NDSU, about $30 million worth, much of it for research on battlefield sensors and equipment coatings.
UND's share will include $2 million to train 31 Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets and 40 U.S. Military Academy cadets to fly helicopters at the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences.
Another $3.5 million will support a research partnership between UND's School of Engineering and Mines and Virginia-based defense contractor Alion to develop more durable parts for military vehicle. The partnership and the funding was announced by Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., earlier this year.
The bill contains $1 million for UND to create a "center of excellence" to support the unmanned aerial vehicle mission coming to Grand Forks Air Force Base. There's also $1.4 million for UND's Energy and Environmental Research Center to bolster its research on hydrogen energy.

Yes, they announced the $30 million in research grants on the news last night, all going directly to the NDSU technology park functions.
