View Full Version : The Canned Music is Driving Me Nuts

I would really like to know who is in charge of the music at the home games. What in the hell were they trying to do in the third quarter?

DO NOT PLAY SONGS THAT

1. kids might dance to at a junior high dance
2. that you can do a figure skating routine to

YMCA?
The Electric Slide?

Are these people trying?

If they play the chicken dance, I'm asking for a refund.

Who do we talk with to make suggestions about the atmosphere during football games? I totally agree, the loud music and constant talking by the idiot PA announcer is really irritating. This is a Bison FB game not a semi-pro Beez basketball game.

After enduring the excessive advertisements AND the stupid music between plays during Saturday's game against Southern Utah, I believe it is time somebody discusses this situation with whomever is in charge of this part of the "atmosphere" of the game.

When people complain that no one "get into the games", well maybe we should take a look at this part of it. How can real football fans "get into the game" when they are listening to this crap from the time the tackle is made right up to when the ball is snapped??!!! Actually, on at least two Bison offensive plays in the third quarter, our wonderful P.A. guy was still talking after the snap!!! I believe there is a rule in the books somewhere where this is not allowed to be done when the visitors have the ball, but we do it to our own team?!!

It seems as though no one stands up and cheers on big third down plays. Well, maybe if the music which has nothing to do with football were cut out AND Mr. P.A. would say nothing, then maybe the fans would "get into the game" on their own.

I know that these ads help pay the D-1 bills, but there has to be other ways of raising revenue that do not destroy the atmosphere of the game. Afterall, the game is why people are in the seats in the first place.

I tried, but was poked and yelled at by the row of geriatric gentlemen sitting behind me. They didn't seem to care for my suggestion of watching one of the four videoboards that they could still view while seated.

A better effort has to be made to promote the "original" Thunderzones, the Team Makers Thunderzone, and maybe even a season-ticket Thunerzone. Promote these areas for the "hardcore" fans, maybe have some contests or something to help ramp up the excitement (i.e. free T-shirts for the craziest Bison apparell outfit, loudest fan, longest standing fan, etc.).

NDSU needs to do something to create "pockets of enthusiasm". After that, it might become contagious and spread throughout the Fargodome :o ::).

I agree. There is NO atmosphere in the FargoDome. You try to yell, whistle, and do whatever to make noise and people look at you like you're interupting their conversation. You stand up to support the Defense and you can hear people asking you to sit down. It's RIDICULOUS. There are rules against noise makers (bells, thunder sticks, horns, etc.) so what can be done if the majority of the crowd doesn't want to be vocal? At Dakota Field one was able to make noise by stomping on the wood bleachers, you can't do this in the FargoDome. I am fed up with the lack of participation by the crowd at NDSU football games. It is pretty sorry when the crowd gets the loudest for Cheesy Bread. There is NO reason that the PA-man has to be talking anytime the NDSU offense has the ball. Pay the bills when the NDSU defense is on the field. I'm done, this irritates me to high heaven. Something needs to change to get the home crowd participating again.

In my opinion, canned music is good only if it is used 10-20 percent of the time in place of the GSMB. Too excessive is not good at all, but I think none at all is detrimental to the dome atmosphere. Giving only 3-4 opportinities throughout the game for playing 20-second clips each is OK, IMO.

But I do agree completely with NorthDakotaBison about the choice of songs they were playing, particularly in the 3rd quarter. I was standing at the southeast corner doing my usual stats, when they were playing the Electric Slide, and I'm thinking to myself, "WTF is this???" I SWEAR TO GOD, they also slipped a f**king Annie Lennox song in there.

If you're gonna play a little canned music, I have some suggestions as to what could be played. Not any of this bubble-gum junior high crap:

"Roll On" by The Living End - A kick-ass punk song that the whole crowd could literally sing along to (We'll roll on with our heads up high... Our conscience in the gutter, our dreams up in the skyyyyy...) if they know the words, kinda like the Beer Song.

"Walkie-Talkie Man" by Steriogram - Another kick-ass song indusive to a dome football atmosphere.

"Try Honesty" by Billy Talent - A nice, short kick-ass intro. 'Nough said.

"Machinehead" by Bush - THE ultimate kick-ass intro.

"False Alarm" by The Bronx - This song could make the game seem more like a party than anything else.

And in the end, you GOTTA use the GSMB most of the time. But I think a little canned music is good, if it displays a college party-type atmosphere. College music for a college football game is what I say. And I think these suggestions are right up that alley.

Bisonator, you are right on the mark..

.. I want to hear ASS KICKING SONGS!

I am also for a "Teammakers with a Pulse" section. I'd gladly pay more for worse seats. I want a place where if you're NOT STANDING UP people look at you like you've got the fuc93ng plague, not the other way around.

I say let the GSMB have the first and the fourth quarters, and play a few canned songs during the second and the third. The songs should be the same from game to game each season to develop an atmosphere and only during timeouts so that more than ten seconds is played.

If I hear, "It's Electric" at another game, I'm going to have a f99king seizure!

TheBisonator,

Good list, but "Machinehead" is the second most over-played arena song behind "Welcome to the Jungle" (and I actually liked GNR until about 1988 ).

It's a bit cheesy (no more so than the Domino's cheer- why not have it on a critical third down???????????), but I like the intro to "Fight for your Right" by the Beastie Boys when the other team is held on a third and long.

Other than that, Pantera's "F#$%@#* Hostile" works for nearly any Joe Mays hit. *;D 8)

I was going to bring up Pantera, but I thought you guys might think I'm a little nuts

I think Cowboys from Hell would be a great Bison theme song.

NorthDakotaBison,

There actually is a Team Makers Thunderzone- it's section 21, in the first ten or so rows.

It still needs some momentum, but if they actually promoted it, it would probably catch on. Bisonfan1 has all the info.

I actually think they played CFH a few times during warmups around 2000 or 2001.

oh, i'm in 21 row T, maybe they'll move me up next year. That would be (or is?) a great section. Not quite the spendy seats, so we don't piss off the Donald Trump's of Fargo, and cheap enough so recent grads can retain some of their vitality.

Just talk to Josh in the ticket office, and tell him you want to get into the Team Maker Thunderzone. They're supposedly trying to get people moved into there if there's enough interest.

IowaBison

I think I'll do that. *I wouldn't have minded being a little closer to that polygamist they call the Southern Utah coach to shut his mouth about the play callin'. *The guy was pouting like a baby. :-[

Well, I'm in the "expanded Thunderzone" in Section 20 down low....I was threatened with being escorted out pretty early in the game, which was a first. I could understand it if I was being derogatory...but apparently I'm not allowed to scream at the punter anymore.

I'd get ahold of Simmers or somebody on that. That's a step backwards. I somewhat understand getting told to sit down in section 21, but when it's in the supposed "crazy" fan area, that's ridiculous.

BTW- What was the punter taunt being used??

We had a good majority of our section up for EVERY defensive third down (section 21 lower rows) Start of the Teamaker Thunderzone this year. What gets me is people complaining about the living dead, including myself, but then NOT getting into the new section, there are open seats every game there, and or differant people that are getting walk up tickets for our section ??Herd Mentality - who was going to escort you out?? I know there are a couple of neo nazis working Security there who have no business in their current positions as Security. As far as I am concerned I payed for my seat and if I choose to stand the entire game in front of my seat, and yell and scream, I really dont see what anyone can do about it

From my perch in the south Thunderzone, I actually saw (and HEARD) the TeamMakers 'zone in the northwest corner. VERY COOL.

I agree, they need to market the thunderzone better. Perhaps by desegnating the north "thunderzone" as a family area (it's dead quiet there anyhow) and encouraging some well-behaved rowdiness on the south side. If the ticket salespeople let it be known that that's where the crazies sit, things will take care of themselves.

But all it takes is one stick in the mud who knows an usher and it reverts back to a library atmosphere. It's downright depressing to be at a college football game and be told to sit down and be quiet on third-and-long.

Bisonguy
10-20-2004, 03:15 AM
Those golden oldies behind me can ask me to sit down (and I will more than likely oblige, due to the fact that they don't have much stand-up left in them), but if they ask me to be quiet as long as I'm not using profane language they have another thing coming.

There was a third down or two where my section started to get on their feet. It takes a group effort, and hopefully it spreads amongst the Fargodome.

I'd rather have the Fargodome making noise on third downs than standing up, if it's a matter of either one. Preferrably it would be both, but it ain't gonna happen without some change.

Market the @#$@# Thunderzones as places to be rowdy!!! That's a great idea about the north Thunderzone for families. Paint up the little munchkins faces, give 'em a six pack of Mountain Dew, and a couple bags of candy. The loudest anklebiters could win a prize from Thundar, like a mini-football or something (free Cheesy Bread?). That might cause an influx of Type II Diabetes in future generations, but at least some people will be screaming the whole game.

The marching band is perfect music for a football game. Canned music is just too sterile. Having one of your school's songs played by the band is so much better than someone pushing a button on a keyboard.

How are the accoustics of the Fargo Dome? The accoustics at the Metrodome are pretty bad, the echoes cancel out a lot of the sound of the band when they are on the field.

When I suggested the songs above I was thinking more along the lines of pre-game warmups, 3rd/4th downs, punts, kickoffs, big plays, etc. I agree that the band should have the floor at halftime but they could definately spice up their songs/routine and get a little more crazy, ala the D-IA bands you see on tv. The acoustics aren't :-/BAD :-/ althouth the sheer height of the roof seems to swallow up noise. That's why when people are going nuts cheering after a TD or whatever it doesn't seem that loud (to me, anyway). I have read post-game interviews of opponents/coaches who said quite the contrary, however.

Alot of those teams are used to playing in front of 5000 fans. So it doesn't really take much to get them thinking that.

I'm over in section 32. Row J (formerly row C) Sadly I haven't been able to make it to a home game yet (that'll change tomorrow) due to work I had to miss the opener.

The fans over there don't take to kindly to noise either. It's rather discouraging when you want to get into the game and try and confuse the snap count on those lovely 3rd down plays. Maybe now that we're up a few rows it'll make a difference.

I'd love to be over there with you rowdy guys and gals though. Looks like fun :)

PS. Make any Pantera song the 'SU theme and I'll match the donation of 1,000.
