Does anyone know about what is necessary to get in the NIT.

There's much talk about getting to the big dance, but the NIT is much more realistic in the short run.

This story is a little old, but I don't think the selection process has changed much. http://www.dailyemerald.com/archive/v99/2/980304/nit.html

Also, the probationary period is shorter to be eligible, but I am not sure on the exact number

"Our goal is to get the best 32 teams," NIT Executive Director Jack Powers said. Other than a team's record and strength of its conference, Powers said the NIT selection committee also takes a team's Rating Percentage Index rank into consideration. A team's RPI is based upon strength of schedule, opponents strength of schedule and Division I winning percentage. ESPN, which owns the NIT television rights, and Madison Square Garden Properties, which hosts the NIT Final Four, also have some say as to which 32 teams are selected, Powers said.
