Redshirting all the freshmen will put extra pressure on the remaining players. I don't think we will have enough depth right now to stay with K-State.

I say we lose by about 30. *Our depth is terrible. *We played 7 at Drake, with Brandon Smith and Andrew Brown the only guys coming off the bench. *We have absolutely no offense. *Dobmeier is the only guy who can consistently hit an outside shot, nobody can break down the defense with dribble penetration, and there is really no offensive post presence. *Andy Kelchen gets most of his points facing up and hitting the 15 foot jump shot.
That said, we'll beat some of the DII's on the schedule just because of Tim Miles. *We don't turn the ball over (Drake's pressure did get to them a little in the 2nd half), play pretty good d, and work the shot clock for a good shot.
Also, K-State's message board is Gopowercat (http://www.gopowercat.com)

It could truely do to our bball team what beating Montana did for our football team.

There's no question that we'll play hard because Tim Miles expects nothing less, but we definetly don't have near the talent that a school like Kansas State has, even if they're not considered a decent team in DI.

Bison_Kent

Being at the game, I was extremely impressed with the Bison men. K-State looked flat the whole first half and was missing a lot of open '3-s but K-State was also getting several calls that NDSU didn't at least IMO.

I think the Wildcats really just outmanned NDSU last night. If NDSU had a little more depth, the outcome likely would have been different. All the Bison players looked gassed with about 10 minutes to play--the time when K-State went on their 14-1 run to take the sizeable lead.

If you take that run away, NDSU should have won. The new point guard Hahn looked great. He was from Wahpeton Science as a JUCO and handled the K-State press well.

I will be very interested to see how they play against Denver on Sunday. If they play like this, they will win.

Kansas State gets by Bison
North Dakota State gives Wildcats a scare in their season opener
By HOWARD RICHMAN
The Kansas City Star

DAVID EULITT/The Kansas City Star
Kansas State's Jeremiah Massey, who put up a shot over North Dakota State's Andy Kelchen, led the Wildcats with 21 points. He also had 10 rebounds Friday night in the win over the Bison.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Kansas State junior forward Marques Hayden paid North Dakota State the ultimate compliment.

“Those guys weren't any joke. I think these guys could play in the Big 12,” Hayden said.

The way it was unfolding Friday night, North Dakota State looked like the only team on the floor that belonged in the Big 12.

K-State — perhaps realizing before it was too late that it actually was the team from the power conference — finally put North Dakota State in its place with a second-half rally, taking a 70-61 victory in the season opener at Bramlage Coliseum.

The Wildcats felt fortunate to avoid an upset that wouldn't have made ESPN headlines, but certainly would have rocked the Wildcats' world.

“Tonight, we won on talent. They outplayed us as a team,” Hayden said.

Senior Jeremiah Massey, who paced the Wildcats with 21 points and 10 rebounds, said K-State avoided embarrassment by turning it on just in time.

“We just came out and played terrible and let these guys dominate,” Massey said. “We thought these guys were going to be slouches. We've got to play ball every night.”

Bottom line: The Wildcats came too close to choking on what was supposed to be a cupcake.

North Dakota State, a school that is in its first transition season in Division I, should have been one of those games in which the Wildcats put it on cruise control during the first half. Instead, shot after shot was a wreck for K-State.

The Wildcats fired blanks their first six attempts from the field. At one point, they were an atrocious four for 18. By halftime, K-State had made only eight of 33 shots (24.2 percent). The Bison took full advantage and gained confidence with each errant K-State attempt.

“It's kind of easier coming out and being the underdog, when you have the sense you have got nothing to lose,” North Dakota State guard Adam Dobmeier said of the Bison's mindset.

K-State trailed 31-23 in the second half when it decided to show up.

North Dakota State began to lose its grip when K-State produced a 14-1 burst. Part of that was Massey's two free throws, giving K-State its first lead since 11-9 at 42-41 with 11 minutes, 29 seconds remaining in the game. Freshman point guard Clent Stewart capped the run with a breathtaking, no-look dish underneath to Cartier Martin for a layup that extended the advantage to 50-42.

K-State heated up down the stretch from three-point range and buried the Bison. After making only one of seven three-point attempts in the first half, the Wildcats nailed five of eight the second half. The two biggest were on back-to-back trips down the court by Stewart and Martin. The latter pushed K-State ahead 56-44 with 5:30 to go.

That still wasn't enough for K-State coach Jim Wooldridge to crack a big smile. He didn't find much of anything to gloat about after this one in which the Wildcats shot 37 percent. K-State often was lackluster as it was in the final exhibition game against Pittsburg State.

“It's another lesson. It's a lesson that our team has yet to understand,” Wooldridge said.

“North Dakota State came in and played very well together. The story was how well they played together, and how dysfunctional we were together. Hopefully, this game will be a teaching tool for us, and we will be able to function better as a team next time out.”

K-State needs rally to top N. Dakota State

By HOWARD RICHMAN

The Kansas City Star

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State nearly choked on a cupcake Friday night.
The season opener against North Dakota State, a school making its debut in Division I, should have been one of those games in which the Wildcats put it on cruise control during the first half. Instead, their 70-61 victory over the Bison at Bramlage Coliseum was a rocky ride almost throughout.

The first game was certainly a highlight of the season for the bison. Congratulations. Well deserved!!

Kansas State junior forward Marques Hayden paid North Dakota State the ultimate compliment.

“Those guys weren't any joke. I think these guys could play in the Big 12,” Hayden said.

But keep in mind if the quote is anywhere near realistic, then the NCC=Big 12, as both KSU and NDSU would be the dregs in those conferences.

Actually, you are somewhat correct with this comment--NDSU currently wouldn't have a prayer against Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, etc., all of whom relish the annual opportunity to play Kansas State.

But the NCC is nowhere near the Big 12, especially now.

I meant to follow the bolded quote with a big ::). Next time I won't be so careless.

Either way, this showing WAS a victory for the Bison. Nobody gave them a realistic chance in this game. The fact that they were competative was good enough for me.
