Alex Belquist, a redshirt wide receiver on the football team, started practicing with the basketball team to help the Bison with some depth.
Guard Ryan Lieser suffered a stress fracture in his foot and is out indefinitely, which left the Bison with nine players.
Belquist, who helped lead New Rockford High to an unbeaten regular season and trip to the North Dakota Class B tournament, is a 6-foot-1 guard.
“We looked at him in high school,” Bison head coach Tim Miles said. “He’s a good player – he just needs to get in basketball shape.”
NDSU is redshirting five freshmen, so the possibility of adding another player from the football team was discussed between Miles and head football coach Craig Bohl earlier this fall.
