Looks like Roebuck has a change of heart towards playing the Bison, Glas is still thinking.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Hope for a rivalry

Sioux, Bison could play again, even if UND doesn't go Division I

By Kevin Fee
Herald Staff Writer

UND and North Dakota State could renew their women's basketball rivalry, but that appears to be at least two seasons away.

The Sioux have contacted the Bison about the possibility of playing them. As UND learned, though, a hitch is that the NDSU schedule for games against NCAA Division II opponents already is filled for next season.

UND and the Bison aren't playing each other in any of the big three sports they have in common - men's and women's basketball and football - after NDSU elevated its program to NCAA Division I at the start of the school year.

"I would have no problem playing them," Sioux women's basketball coach Gene Roebuck said of the Bison. "That game is good for North Dakota, period, whatever level."

Though UND is researching a possible move to Division I, UND remains Division II in all sports, except for men's and women's hockey. So NDSU has a scholarship edge over the Sioux in men's and women's basketball and football, based on NCAA and conference rules regarding limits.

Bison women's basketball coach Amy Ruley said her schedule for games against Division II schools is full for next season. Scheduling is handled by assistant coach Kelli Layman, who is still looking for a few games against Division I opponents.

Layman said the Bison would consider a Sioux game the season after next, if NDSU has an opening. But, she said, the Bison would prefer to play 28 Division I games in 2005-06.

"I think that's where we're progressing," Layman said of an all-Division I schedule.

The Bison hope to play 25 games against Division I teams and three games against Division II teams next season, Ruley said.

Ruley said she would like to renew the Sioux-Bison rivalry, too.

"We didn't want to lose it to begin with," she said. "We assumed it was done for good."

Roebuck has had a change of heart. He said he would prefer a home and home series with the Bison. If it could be worked out, he'd like to have the Grand Forks game in the new Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.

Sioux men's basketball coach Rich Glas said his team's schedule is full for next year.

Would Glas play the Bison in two years? "I'd have to think about that one," he said.

Does anybody think that the coaches should make a huge stink about accomodating the Sioux on the schedule? Maybe a "What could you have been thinking UND, you guys back out, didn't want NDSU a year ago but now you are begging for a game!" mentality should be used?

I say make UND beg for it!!!! A 2 home with 1 away contract with them. D-1 to D-2 deserves that type of relationship, especially the sioux.

I hope the schedule is full. If Coach Ruley does decide to play I certainly hope we dont play up there. Certainly I agree with the coach taking them at their word and moving on with our DI schedule.

I wonder why they picked Roebuck as the one that had to swallow his pride first and ask for a game?

If they want to visit Fargo in two years let them. I say we skip the home/home thing for every year that they've been babies.

Is the Betty E. arena large enough to hold a Bison/Sioux game? It is my understanding that it only seats 3,000 - 4,000. A Bison/Sioux game would certainly draw more than that. The first game should be held at the BSA.

I can't imagine Coach Ruley or the administration being guided by spite on this so it looks like NDSU v UND will be back. Two for one exchanges sound about right to me, but Coach Ruley will decide on that.

fair enough, as long as the first two are in fargo.

Most agree that we shouldnt be scheduling any DII teams in football. I was curious how people feel about BB? Obviously a few on the board have indicated acceptance. Are there any that are opposed? Maybe a poll would be interesting? It sounds to me that there is no hurry on the part of Coach Ruley to sign them up anytime soon.

while they are D2 they should come here, which they won't.

during their transition we should insist on 2/1

If you are taking a Poll....I say NO more UNDII games in any sport ever again. Until they go DI.

We went DI to move on and upward, why would we take a step back and play the Sue??

Maybe Potts will lobby for state laws saying the schools have to stay together, forcing UND to move up.

I'd love to see an annual football game between NDSU and UND at the FargoDome.

that would be the end-all be-all right there. it would be like UNI visiting Iowa State and Iowa each year!

I guess it wouldn't be all bad if we played them in football.....

I just think that NDSU moved to DI so we could expand our horizons and play teams from all over the nation and gain exposure.

I don't know, just seems contradictory to where NDSU is headed. Call it Spite towards the Sue, but the way they have handled NDSU's move doesn't make me want to see the Bison play them anytime soon. It would be like rewarding bad behavior.

I wouldn't mind seeing 2/1's with UND BB, or even guarantee games in the BSA. Home/home - no way.

Strange that Roebuck, who stated if UND moves to DI he's gone, is open to the idea of playing NDSU, while Glas, who stated he wants UND to move to DI, isn't as keen on the idea.

Roebuck said at the beginning of the DI debate that he would play the Bison. About two weeks after he made this statement, he did an about face. Someone must have given him an ass whooping. Could that person have been "why should we play them, it will only help them"Glas.

Forgot about that. It therefore appears that Pornstachio, as much as Bison fans like to make fun of him, has the biggest balls of them all in the UND athletic department.

Despite what assholes UND and the administration has been, it would be good to renew the rivalry. I think that it would be good for Bison athletics in that it still would probably be the biggest draw for the Herd. That would translate into more money and more exposure. It is really our only rivalry right now.......

Do you think that NDSU admininistration would actually agree to a road game in Grand Forks for football or basketball? SDSU might play USD again one day but SDSU will never travel to Vermillion again. (assuming USD remains DII).

Aren't they working on Montana style state laws that would keep the 2 schools together?

I would vote for not playing UND at GF unless they were D-1. ( in any sport)

I doubt there will be any game between SU & UNDII in football and basketball (mens and womens) until 2007. And that will only happen if UNDII goes DI.

If it's good for the state, fine. If it provides some measure of good public relations, also fine.

If this takes a few years to play out, though, the rivalry will slowly die as the current players won't have the historical perspective. It will only live among us alum.

I am ready to move on. If that means doing so without UND, so be it. I don't think we should compromise future scheduling(i.e. if we schedule UND and get a shot at Kansas or Iowa or Purdue on the same date, drop UND without penalty) or give special preference.

I agree with scott, let's let them come to us. After all the crap Dr Kupcake and company have pulled on us recently, they need to throw out the olive branch to us. Then IF it makes sense for us we play them in Fargo. D-I schools do not travel to D-II schools. If they don't make the first move, I say we move on without them, we will be just fine w/o d2sue.

Follow along: it was a compliment to Gene Roebuck, as difficult as that might be for you to grasp.

I happen to love what Amy Ruley said. UND refused to play us this season when we were having difficulty finding quality opponents and now they decide they might want to play us again when we have to play a full division I schedule. They had their chance and they tried to make the Bison suffer by refusing to play them. Rich Glas still refuses to even talk about playing the men and our men's team has a ways to go to get where they need to be.

Way to go Amy they ended the rivalry and decided division II was where they wanted to be. We are division I and they are division II. SDSU has a great women's basketball team and they are our new rival. 8)

I like that too KChats. *I think it shows where NDSU is coming from. *When Miles says scheduling them is a non-event I dont think he says that because he has no interest in helping them, he says it with resignation. *Obviously we would have liked to keep them on the schedule but Coach Ruley hits the nail on the head why they arent on it and probably wont be anytime soon.

I think its a good thing for us. *They are not helping define us like they could if they had not slammed the door. *NDSU is now making their own way into DI athletics. *We are defining our role and finding our niche.

On the other hand, what NDSU is doing is having a huge influence on them. *Their entire focus is on what NDSU has done and how can they follow. *Its a very interesting dynamic. *
