Jackrabbit Men Get First Division I Victory

NASHVILLE, TN – Senior guard Brady Hokenson scored on a jumper from out front with five seconds left as South Dakota State picked up its first victory against a Division I opponent defeating Tennessee State 82-80 at the Gentry Center Wednesday night. . . .

The Jacks rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final five minutes after Ben Beran and Michael Loney had fouled out. Ironically, neither team shot a free throw in the first half but the two teams combined for 28 free throw attempts in the second half with the Jacks going 13-of-17 hitting their last nine.

SDSU coach Scott Nagy praised his team. “When we were down ten, and had people foul out, it would have been easy to cash it in,” Nagy said. “But they hung in there and really executed well. They competed all the way to the end. I can’t tell you how proud I am of them.”

Nagy, who is in his tenth year at SDSU, is now 212-67

Senior guard Luke Geiver hit six three-point baskets on eight attempts as he scored a career high 26 points. His previous best was 12 at Wisconsin-Milwaukee earlier this year.

With the big guys in foul trouble the guards picked up the slack with Geiver, Hokenson and Andy Kleinjan combining for 49 Points. Hokenson and freshman Steve Holdren each had a double-double, Hokenson with 12 points and 11 assists while Holdren had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Kleinjan, playing in his second game since coming off an injury, scored his first 11 points of the season, all in the first half. He sparked a rally which saw the Jacks lead by seven at 28-21.

Bruce Price, a 6-3 sophomore guard from Minneapolis, hit a three-pointer to end the scoring in the first half, giving Tennessee State a 40-37 lead. Then he opened the second half with another three, pushing the lead to six, and the Jacks had to play catch up the rest of the way.

After trailing 70-60, Hokenson and Joe Green each hit a pair of free throws, then Geiver hit his sixth three and it was 70-67.

The Jacks took a 78-77 lead when Green scored on a rebound, was fouled and hit the free throw with 43 seconds left. Then Geiver added a pair of free throws for a three-point lead, but Kareem Grant hit a three-pointer for the Tigers to tie it with 14 seconds left.

After Hokenson’s basket, Tennessee State had a shot but missed.

Tennessee State, now 5-7 for the season, is picked second in the Ohio Valley Conference this season and suffered its first home loss of the year. TSU came off a road trip on which it played Arkansas and Alabama.

On the broadcast - they said that there were not 200 people in the seats. 1079 was pure fiction.
