Last Meeting: NDSU won 87-65 picking up the schools first ever DI win in the process. Ben Woodside lead NDSU with 27 points and 9 assists he was followed by an 18 point effort by Andre Smith. NDSU also outrebounded EMU 37-24 and shot 55.6% for the game and a blistering 76.2% in the 2nd half.

Last Game: EMU beat IPFW 62-61 on a buzzer beating three point shot by senior forward Craig Cashen.

Common Opponent: Marquette beat EMU 95-62 in Milwaukee

Thoughts: EMU has won 3 of their last 4 games so they are improving but I think if NDSU plays its game the Bison should win. EMU is 3-1 at home this year and 9-8 at home over the past two years so they do seem to play better at the convocation center but in the end NDSU will prove too much offensively and in the paint. Prediction: NDSU-78 EMU-66

This arena that you are looking at ^^^^^^^^^ is the culmination of all the design suggestions that fans on this board have wanted for a new facility.

If I was Terry Stroh, I'd be ordering stacks of blueprints of this arena from EMU's architect.

Last game EMU beat IPFW at the buzzer. We all know IPFW has a quality team so tonight's game could prove to be another tough road game.

Looking at the box score from that game shows that four players came off the bench to log more minutes than the starters. Leading scorer in that game was Bunkley ( 6'5" wing) who had 27 minutes off the bench had 19 with 5 for 7 from three. As a team they went 11 for 23 from three or 33 or their 62 points.

Unless Matthews, a 6'8" transferr from Marquette, their best inside player goes off on us, cutting down their three point attempts should be a key to the game.

Matthews was 5 for 5 from the floor last time out logging 34 (most on the team) minutes off the bench.

Good solid base defense should be the difference for the Bison. Hopefully LM can play behind Matthews without needing a double down. Go Bison!

If the Bison keep playing this way 400-500 will be watching them back in Fargo. Woody is on an extended cold streak and the bench is full of a bunch of so-so players. What is up the Bison D lately. They can't stop anybody without getting a foul and the magic is completely gone on offense. Disappointed is an understatement.

I wasnt planning on going to any more in the first place, but wow, *the rest of the schedule is a bad deal for NDSU

Couldn't win on the road last year(just two wins) and still can't win this year, the schedule has been tougher but Miles has got to figure out whats going on with the road games. The good news is that NDSU has Valley City and Mary up next(never thought I'd say that) so the team should be able to get out of this funk and after that comes a very winnable game against Winston-Salem State on the road.

Really, I think the rest of scheduling is a blessing in that it gives NDSU a chance to figure out whats going wrong on the road and work on building depth. Those are two areas the team needs to improve on bigtime if it wants to take the next step.

Sounds like Miles called out his stars after the game tonight in the postgame talk. Part of it is they are probably playing too many minutes to stay fresh. The other part is probably still the inconsistent game times with no conference schedule routine. I think Coach needs to roll the young guys in more often to get the starters a blow. Make them play harder but let them get out more often to rest up. If you conserve your energy you probably do it on defense. When you are tired shots don't fall and you get called for blocking fouls because you don't move your feet. The young guys will get better as they play more and when they are in (you probably don't do them all at once maybe 2 at a time) the other starters need to step up their game. You never know maybe another young guy gets going like Sam Sussenguth (sp?) did tonight. You have 10 players for a reason play them and keep the guys a bit fresher.

Tough game tonight. By looking at the rest of the schedule, the Bison look like they could win out if they play to their ability. Should be able to get the backups more experience in the rest of the schedule, which will make us better for next year. Keep pluggin away!

I didn't follow this game but...

IMO, we only have one answer to our offensive struggles. It's Winks... He needs to step it up, play with more passion (like he does on occasion)... like Nelson does all the time, like Dre does most the time.

Why him you ask...
1. He is the only guy we have that is a complete package.
a. Can create his own shot because he is tall enough, has back to basket moves, can beat his man off the dribble, can shoot the lights out.
b. Purest shooter on the team.
c. Can jump out of the gym
d. Long arms and more "athletic" and coordinated than the rest of the team (I really dispise the athletic term though).
2. Woodside is to short to create his own shots, he can penetrate and maybe get a floater, but can't really take a dribble and shoot without a screen. Also isn't a lights out consistent shooter (last year was a rare occurance imo).
3. Nelson is great coming off screens and playing hard, but again short and no back to basket moves.

Not sure what the funk is this year, he is to much of a nice guy out there on the court :-). Winks either needs more confidence or needs to be given a nudge into freedom instead of worrying about running the offense. I think Miles should/can do both.

All that being said Winks needs an attitude like Dre and Nelson next year for us to have a chance. He pretty much has to be the on court tempo leader. If Winks fulfills his potential like the others have (Nelson, Woodside), we would be extremely potent... as was stated last year by multiple team members and coaches "he does everything for us" "he keys everything for us" we really need to get back to that to free up everyone else for their specialties.



SS - sounds like may be coming around for next year, I hope so.

I say NOW we can officially bag the season and start developing the bench. We will need that bench to win the MidCon regular season next year and GUARANTEE our seat in the NIT. ;)

Before we single out one guy as the key to victory lets look at the reality of playing at the D1 level. Established D1 programs have had years to develop some depth. We have four guys in Smith, Woodside, Nelson and Winkleman who play huge minutes that have more than lived up to expectations. It is remarkable this team is able to hang with every team they have played so far when you consider the following:

If you have ever played the game of basketball, you know how difficult it is to play intense defense for long periods of time and also be effective on the offensive end. I say again, it has been remarkable really that the Bison have done as good as they have against these established teams.

Last night even a lower end MAC team like EMU can bury you with athletes if you can't put the same amount of energy on the floor. Medlock hit early shots which allowed EMU to press. Their coach substituted early and often. It put us in a hole we could not crawl out of because we could not match the scoring and athletism they could throw at us off the bench.

For the rest of the season we as fans must take it one game at a time just like the players. I would suspect that Miles will try to develop his depth for the rest of the year. It is the responsibility for each player to try to improve their own weaknesses and above all play with confidence and not with someone elses expectations.

Bottom line is I think most observers feel this team is ahead of schedule in the D1 transition. We need to develop and improve the players we have now this season and bring in Tweit, Coleman and Carlson next season and try to move up the D1 ladder. This team will be a very competitive Mid-Con team.
