Was looking at the latest official RPI chart and found some interesting info regarding the records of Division I teams vs non Div I teams. After reading some of the smack and non-smack threads regarding the difference in competition level of the Divisions, I thought this might be of interest. It sure surprized me!
The 336 Division I teams played a total of 343 games against non Division I opponents. That is an average of just over one per team. The won - loss record was 336 - 7 for a winning percentage of 97.9%. That makes the odds of a Division I team losing to a lower division about the same as getting struck by lightning!
;D ;D ;D

To break it down by final RPI rating we get:

1-50 19-0
51-100 29-0
101-150 59-0
151-200 54-1
201-250 60-0
251-300 62-4
301-336 53-2

The only teams to lose to a lower Division opponent and their RPI were: 181 Murray State, 253 Texas Arlington, 257 UMKC, 258 New Hampshire, 263 Pepperdine, 315 Jacksonville State and 336 and last Northern Colorado.

It is also noteworthy that outside of the top 100 there was not much variance in the number of lower division teams played.

It would mean a lot more if teams didn't strategically schedule.

Nice work Cabis

You can always count on good ol' Northern Colorado to make a list like that

Proves that Division 1 is soo Heads and Shoulders better than the next divisions.

its like "CASE CLOSED"

plus, it gives an AD/bball coach ammunition for NOT playing 2 or 4 local universites in my opinion.

The good thing is I don't think we have to worry about any more DII's on our regular schedule with all of the Mid-Con games. A couple mid-major home-home's and 2 or 3 high-major's and that about does it.

It all depends on how many home non-conference games you want to play. If you want a non-conference schedule that is very heavy on road games, you can avoid D-II games. If you want a balanced non-conference schedule, it probably means at least one D-II game.

This reserach does not include exhibition games...

Winona State beat both Drake and University of Minnesota at the begining of the year...

And I'm sure there were more....?

exactly, they are EXHIBITION

It likely would have been tougher to win those games had they been regular season games rather than exhibition. D-I teams in exhibition games are often more focused on working the kinks out than they are focusing on the opponent, and that can come back to bite you against a good, motivated D-II team.

Did those wins by Winona count in there current win streak?
