Its to bad if he does not make it, if you look he is listed on the Non Roster Invitees. Delluccio is listed as on the depth char for all 3 outfield positions, that might have been the difference.

I watched the last four innings last night. Chris had probably the biggest AB of the game. He came in as a pinch hitter in the 8th with one out and a runner on second. This was after the Cards had cut an 8-2 lead to 8-7. Key point of the game because the Cards were feeling it and the Phillies were reeling.

Chris went down 0-2 right away and then proceeded to foul off good pitches and didn't swing at any bad pitches. He ended up doubling down the first base line after about a 10 pitch at bat. This scored the runner from second and they broke it open from there winning 16-8. Obviously there were a lot of heroes for the Phillies but Chris really came through when they needed him. He caught the 8th and 9th.

Speculation by the announcers was that the regular catcher might not be with the Phillies for the entire season because Boston obviously needs catching help. You never know.

A bit of an update: I was out in Philadelphia last week as part of a two week long baseball trip. I asked a couple of the locals about Chris. An older gentleman I met near the Liberty Bell was obviously a big Phillies supporter. He had nothing but good to say about "Costie" as he called him. He said that the majority of Phillie fans are upset with the general manager, not Charlie Manuel, the manager of the team. It is the GM who brought aboard Rod Barajas and insists that he gets the playing time. Chris is very much a favorite with the fans, but the GM appears to be the one who is blocking his path.

By the way, the guy I was talking to made a special point of mentioning how much class Chris has shown in the demotions he has received. Also, being sent all the way down to AA was not a slap at Chris. He (according to this guy I talked to) requested it, so he could play catcher every day, something that he likely would not have had the chance to do at AAA Ottawa.

Good luck, Chris, we're still pulling for you.

problem is that they have two young catchers that for some reason think are good hitters. they are batting about .205 and .245 while Coste is well above .300

I think a good team for him to get traded to is the Cubs. Jason Kendall can't throw anyone out and he is well over the hill in hitting.

Course, the trading deadline is over but they can still make trades.

I hope he can find a regular gig w/ someone. He hit over .300 last year in 200 AB and is doing the same this year in limited action. By all accounts the pitchers love to throw to him. Also doesn't have much service time so he'll be cheap. I could see him in a Redmond type roll. Hopefully someone will give him a chance.

mn-bison
08-27-2007, 01:38 AM
He has gotten in the last 5 games, looks like he played catcher in two and pinch hit in the other three. Still batting over .340. (81 points higher than the other two catchers on the roster.) Sooner or later they may just figure out Chris may be worth while keeping around. If not, he would make a good addition to the Twins as a third catcher/DH...

The Twins have Redmond signed for another year and I dont' think that they're willing to carry 3 catchers if they can avoid it so, unfortunately I don't see much of a chance of Coster ending up with them.

mn-bison
08-30-2007, 12:00 AM
That is where the DH comes into play. I don't think it is possible to be more pathetic than the Twin's DH's this year... Cirrilo, R. White, Kubel, Tyner, G. Jones, etc... I don't see anyone in the minors who can come up and be a DH, so they will be looking elsewhere and maybe Coste could be a good fit.

Also, it may allow them a little more freedom to DH Mauer on the days he doesn't catch...

Not going to win a Nobel or anything but well written, very entertaining and some great stories about playing for the Red Hawks among many others, so if you follow them at all it should put an extra big smile on your face.

Everyone loves Chris. Here, in Mexico, in Philly. Everyone, except his first college coach, apparently.

Chris has a HR, 2 doubles, and 3 walks in 18 plate appearances with only 1 strikeout in early action so far this season. 267/389/600 BA/OBP/SLG. He's the backup catcher so look for him Sunday afternoons as well as the occasional pinch hit.

Get away day in Philly. Coste is playing this afternoon.

Reached on a error in the first. Philly up 3-0.

Philly cut down a guy at the plate to end the 2nd. The pitcher was in the on-deck circle so maybe that's the right play on Houston's part. Just saw the video (mlb.com Gameday is awesome!) Good play by Coste, ball was up the 1st baseline but they had the runner by 10 ft. Poor risk, even with the pitcher up next.

Houston walks the pitcher to start the bottom of the 2nd on 4 pitches. U-G-L-Y. Speaking of ugly, Howard grounds into a bases loaded double play to end the threat. After two Houston has to feel like the Governor just commuted their death sentance.

Leadoff man for Houston stole second. No shame there, he's 90% for his career 18 of 19 last season and 9 of 9 so far this year.

Coste concludes a monster day w/ a 2 run shot to center capping the scoring in a 10-2 whitewash of the Astros. 7 pitch AB, so I guess he can work a guy a little when he needs to as well. :)

Final line 4-5 w/ a Run and 3 RBI. Reached base 5 times. 1 Double 1HR.

Another 4 pitch walk to start the 3rd for Philly. Coste bats 3rd, maybe they can make something of it this time.

1st and 3rd no out, Coste doubles off the wall in left! RBI, 2nd and 3rd no outs. 4-zippy, Philly.

Houston starter chased from game on Utley 2 run shot in 4th. Reliever walks Howard on 5 pitches, advances to second on grounder, 1 out. IBB w/ 1st empty to get to Coste. Single to right to load them up w/ 1 down! ...Bahhhh... K'ed the SS and P to end the inning. It's a miracle Houston is only down 5. Their 3rd baseman has kicked 2 balls and they've walked 4 in 4 innings.

Another basehit for Coste! 3-4 and on-base 4 times. He's seen a total of 7 pitches in 4 plate appearances. See the ball hit the ball! 8-1 Philly after 6.

2 Run Homer in the 8th.

Coste finishes 4 of 5, 1R, 3RBI, 1 2B, 1HR. on-base all 5 plate appearances!

ESPN and Baseball Prospectus have them at about 35% to make the playoffs. Chasing the Mets and Brewers but they have 3 left with New York on the road and 4 with Milwaukee at home. It's a calculated risk for the Phillies. If something happened or they needed to pinch hit for Ruiz in a crucial spot the pitcher would have to bat. It's just going to be against Kasmir, the Rays only left handed starter. Coste is the bench bat with the most pop from the right side for the Phillies but they've got several better options against righties. Also the Phillies bullpen is the best in baseball, at most there are only 7 games left, and they're only running out 4 starting so that adds an extra long relief arm to the pen as well. So if there's a catastrophy and Ruiz comes out of a game early it's not as if they're handing the ball to a bunch of AAA relievers and are going to mess up the bullpen for a month.

Coste's salary this year is $415,000. If the Phillies win the world series, his player cut will be about $308,000. If they lose, it will be about $234,000.

Base salaries for minor league players:

Rookie, Short Season, Low-A: $1100/month

Percentage of professional contracts resulting in a big league player: 2%

I think that by the time these guys make it to the big leagues they are entitled to every cent they can get their hands on.

Chris had a nice interview with Dan Hammer today on his show.

Chris won his World Series championship tonight! Congrats to him. He was mentioned by the closer during the interview right after he threw the final pitch! I am sure Bucky is disappointed that it didn't go one more game. If it did, Chris was going to fly him to Tampa Bay for the game. Goes to show the appreciation and respect he has for his college coach. I also saw a tribute to him at South High today. I guess I didn't realize he graduated from there. Anyway, he gave the school and game-used cathers mask (which are cool to look at close up by the way) and bat and a game issued Coste jersey. What a classy guy! ;)

Ruiz went on the 15 day DL this week so Coster's probably going to get a fair number of at bats the next two weeks.

Apparently Ryan Howard is recoverning from a serious sinus infection so they DHed him his first game back and put Coste in at first. That's interleague baseball for you.

Tonight! First 1000 fans.

Did you get yours Road? I heard Lakes was first in line and when he went through the gate and reached for the bobble, they pointed to the sign that said, "Tonights promotion is only for people 18 and older. Please understand! Red Hawks Management" and he said "But I am, I just look like an elf!" Sorry Lakes, little buddy, I couldn't help myself! ;)

Houston claims Coste off waivers today.

two north dakota boys on the same team (erstad is an astro as well).

i happened to look at the astros hitting stats to see how pudge and their other catcher are doing and i see that mike hampton is hitting an impressive .346. not bad for a pitcher.

And the worst part...they were a Phillies fan. He got two gifts that day #1 was his bobble of his favorite teams catcher Chris Coste and #2 the news that Coste had been released and picked up by the Astros. Maybe he can find an Astros fan to sell it too. ;)
