Here is the list of all division men's basketball attendences. NDSU ranked 7th overall behind St. Cloud St. (3105), UND (3423) and SDSU (3491) within the conference. The average was 2868 per game for NDSU. I thought it would be good to see how the Mid-Con teams did and see where we would have ranked right now. Also, I thought showing the Big Sky attendences would be good.
MCC
1. Oral Roberts 5562/game
2. Valparaiso 4376
3. UM-Kansas City 2858
4. Southern Utah 2183
5. Oakland (MI) 1481
6. IUPUI 1217
7. Centenary (LA) 1332
8. W. Illinois 1075
9. Chicago St. 399 (that is not a misprint)

Big Sky
1. Weber St. 6641
2. Montana 4491
3. Montana St. 4293
4. E. Washington 2645
5. Idaho St. 2425
6. N. Arizona 1626
7. Portland St. 1345
8. Sacramento St. 1099

Also, here are some of the other Division I independents that have been talked about being added to the MCC:
Texas A & M-Corp. Christi 1483
Texas-Pan America 2029
IUPFW 1217

It looks like to me we would be right in the middle to the upper half (3rd in the MCC and 4th in the Big Sky) of each conference right now. SDSU would be a good basketball addition but NDSU isn't real far behind for an average attencence. Imagine if NDSU would be contending for conference titles year after year in basketball like SDSU does. Also, it doesn't appear like any of the other top DI independents would match NDSU or SDSU in attendence.

they were contenders this year and attendance was not that great. bk you sure like to speculate. however i do like that there are some facts (statistics) in your post this time.

Yes, we had a pretty good season in basketball but it wasn't like it was in mid 90s when we tied for a title and were regurarly going to the NCAA DII tournament. Last year, we contended and you saw the attendence rise towards the end of the season at NDSU. The average included many games against NAIA and DIII schools. I doubt any NCC teams would sell out these games especially since they are weekday games in December. But lets look at past past year's confence only attendence:
1/10/03 SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 4089
1/11/03 MINNESOTA STATE, MANKATO 3062
1/31/03 SOUTH DAKOTA 3665
2/1/03 NORTHERN COLORADO 3226
2/6/03 AUGUSTANA COLLEGE 2985
2/20/03 NEBRASKA-OMAHA 3049
2/27/03 ST. CLOUD STATE 3811
3/1/03 NORTH DAKOTA 6507
3/4/03 SOUTH DAKOTA (NCC tourn.) 1311

Avg. = 3523 per home game for conference foes.

Next year, I think basketball attendence will be better since this season was a 20 win season. Last year, we were coming off a poor season and would likely result in poor home attendence.

Those are good figures. Its going to be interesting to see how the DI schedule pans out. 3.500 is a nice number and will be hard to break. But, if you get Valpariso and keep UND you have something. I think Oral Roberts will be a good draw too. There's no way I would see every road game but all of those cities look nice.

We also have some very nice scheduling options in the Big Sky. How many games do you need? 20?

JBB,

I thought basketball had a maximum of 30 games in a season but I could be wrong. Getting 15 home dates will be hard to do if we are an independant other then scheduling NCC teams and maybe some Big Sky teams and going on the road to some Big 10 and Big 12 schools. The MCC would be good in my opinion to assure the home games in our probationary period.

Living so far off, I have not been to a Bison basketball game is something like 110 years! It does seem to me that in the past....like 1980 to 85 we were drawing very good at the BB games. Does anyone have any attendance figures for those years? Also it could be that I had drank enough that I was seeing double at those games so the crowd seemed much larger.... ;)

....Yeah, I remember a certain young lady who posts on this board periodically who was 'pretty' tipsy (to say the least) at the MSUM BB game, if I remember correctly. You know who you are......S.
