I just heard that St. Mary's reluctance to committ to the Great West Football Conference may stem from their Board of Trustees to decide weither or not they will continue playing football. It is believed that their board will decide the fate of the program this week.

This is not confirmed yet but it sure would state why they were not actively showing off the new conference like the other six schools.

Loosing St. Mary's would be too bad as the GWC needs the games they provide. I hope they stay on board... :-/

We do need games....but it was pretty much an automatic win for everyone.

I'd rather have Sac State than them anyday.

I do believe it's official- St. Mary's is dropping football. The Great West Conference is down to six teams- that is the bare minimum to be an automatic qualifier.

It is not looking good for St. Mary's. Here is an article on the situation:

It would be good to get a seventh team in my opinion. I also wonder if they will drop this season or if they will play out one more season.

They dropped football. Man, that must suck for the 15 kids they signed in February.

From an NDSU perspective that's one more open date to fill but, otoh, it's also one less trip to California.

From a Great West perspective, the average attendance and power rating of the conference just shot up.

I posted this previously on AGS

The silver lining to SMC leaving would be that the GWC's GPI would greatly increase. (without SMC the GWC would have ranked third in IAA by the Massey last year-behind the BSC and Gateway) Also, this frees up 9/11 for Southern Utah. The SUU-UCD game could be moved to 9/11 (UCD is open that day) freeing up 10/23 for SUU. Look who has 10/23 open... none other than SDSU. Then SDSU could play SUU and we could have full conference schedule. Also 6 is the min number needed for an eventual autobid (although a few extra teams would be nice for stability). And the game against SMC would be a good chance for a win for the other GWC member

At least St. Mary's was a road game. *:-/

Well that should set the dates for your Napa vacation :)
One would think road games would be a lot easier to find than home games however

so we have that going for us.... which is nice

We already decided to go around Nov. 6th, so it didn't affect me. I even think I got the step-inlaws to go to the game, too. ;D

St. Mary's gave up football for Lent. ;D

-credit Gene Taylor for coming up with that one.

Actually, I'm looking at this like a blessing in disguise. One less long trip and now there are some other schools that had games that will be looking for someone to play. I still feel for those athletes however, hopefully they go on to success like some of the Morningside players did.

New Idea.... move SUU-NDSU to either 9/11 or 11/13 (preferably 11/13 as this would give us a late season home game). SUU would have 10/16 open as does SDSU allowing a game. once again we can have the round robin

10/23 possibility mentioned earlier (SUU vs SDSU) won't happen as SDSU is playing mont st. that day. *Also Mont St's schedule is full so no game next year :(

Montana State thinks they're playing SDSU on 10/23-

Montana State is at CSU on 9/25-http://www.csurams.com/article.aspx?articleID=6282

I meant MSU was playing SDSU that do so the schedule swap previously postulated (having SUU play SDSU on 10/23 was not possible.)

:)

Sometimes (actually always) I type too fast and don't proofread :-/ ;D

I didn't know Davis almost dropped football in '92. Wow, is there nothing sacred?
